HA, and you guys thought Giancarlo Stanton's 61 HRs were impressive yesterday. Arcia hit 63 BOMBS yesterday with this:

As a diversion in a terrible season, your column makes me laugh.  Perhaps you should do a comparison of how Arcia and Ortiz were handled because it is not their potential, but the Twins ability to maximize a players potential that really counts. 

 

Did anybody ever fill Arcia's underwear with peanut butter? That is the crux of this comparison.

Well, Ozzie got his first July homer.  Now 1-23 for July, with 12 K's and 0 BB.  He also managed to get thrown out trying to steal a base, presumably after a fielder's choice.

 

I feel for the guy, I really do. Maybe someday it all comes together for him.  Hopefully in the National League.

I really don't understand Arcia because he has so much raw ability but he seems to be overrated one minute on here and underrated the next.

 

He is exactly the type of player (upside) that a rebuilding team or a team with a PH/part time DH role should take a chance on. But when the Twins signed Park, planned on Mauer at 1B and kept Plouffe (affecting Sano) the writing was on the wall for Arcia and to a lesser extent Vargas. Once Grossman got hot (and stayed hot) there just wasn't room for everyone.

 

I wish the best for Arcia though. I keep cheering for players after they leave the team (if I liked them in the first place).

Since the All-Star break, Arcia is on fire. Batting .400 with a homer, for an OPS of 1.571^*. If he keeps this pace up, he'll set records, just like we always knew he could.

Not that it improves his overall line significantly, but he actually had 4 BB for July at the time you posted this, big dog.  A 14.8% BB rate.  He got another one last night too.

 

Small samples, but his 2016 BB% with the Twins was already a career high 8.8%, and he's at 11.5% in his time with the Rays so far, for an overall 2016 mark of 9.6%.  Still needs to take the big step of controlling those K's to be an above league average hitter, though...

I agree, except that he seems to play his worst when in a part-time role. He's so streaky he needs to play everyday to hit his stride. And when he's off, he's soooo bad that he doesn't deserve any playing time. It's a vicious cycle. 

 

If his adjustments ever pay off to where he can at least make contact during a slump it would be a different story.

I kept getting blasted last year for pointing out that Arcia should be in AAA because he was in an awful hitting funk. This year people are indifferent to him.

 

But yes this is just like every topic on here. In spring training it was a travesty that Duffey wasn't in the rotation and a couple of months later people are questioning whether or not he is part of the rotation going forward or if he should have been a likely solid pitcher (a low 4's ERA) this year.

Yes and No!

like Oswaldo, but recognize the flaws in his game. He may end up as good as a Valencia, good ML ball player, but not a future HOF dude like Papi. Ortiz is well and truly the one that got away, much like Ruth was to the Red Sox: love the symmetry of that story.

With his injury, he was probably a pretty obvious nontender candidate this winter anyway, so the Rays just got that out of the way.  Maybe he will clear waivers and have a few weeks to tour AAA facilities in advance of the minor league contract he will be signing this winter.

It would be interesting to see someone research which teams have more prospects ranked in the Top 100 who turn out to be busts. Of course, you'd also have to define what you mean by "bust." Under some, but not all, definitions, Arcia would be one.

He seems like a good fit in Oakland as a part-time DH/OF. They're good at not over exposing guys with platoon and defensive issues.

Arcia is still young enough. But part of it is that he has to turn himself around. Thought him coming early to spring training was a good sign. Has to be willing to work on his outfield defense. But he might thrive if he can find another team willing to work hard with him and his skill set, which is there.
