stringer bell Verified Member Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 Another RH bat, I guess, is needed. I see he's 5'8", but has played some first base.

rwilfong86 Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Someone is gonna be moved to make room on the 40 man. I'm seeing a trade on the horizon.
Tuba Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Kiriloff to IL? Kepler traded? Only person you can move to AAA is Larnach, not sure you'd want to do that.

I read this Tweet then the comments and you're right: https://twitter.com/tlschwerz/status/1628177028884070402 Also I wonder who gets dropped from the Opening Day lineup.
chpettit19 Community Moderator Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Just looks like a depth move to me. A little extra spring training insurance for any injuries. Extra Kirilloff insurance mostly. Would be shocked to see him make the opening day roster if Kirilloff is good to go opening day, and there aren't any spring injuries to IFers. FlyingFinn 1
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 I don't understand this move, other than they clearly want DEPTH this year. They definitely aren't counting on rookies in the INF this year.....Farmer and this guy? I'm a little confused. Vanimal46, SF Twins Fan and Nashvilletwin 3

pierre75275 Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 But why? This move along with the Gallo is very puzzling to me? Who is your bench? Jeffers, Taylor, Farmer and one of Gordon or Solano? Are we running with 14 position players? Are planning on using St Paul as "resting " not official DL place for pitching? This is puzzling.
sweetmusicviola16 Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Decent on base guy for what it's worth. I don't get the move either. Other than they want to compete and don't have the confidence in the rookies?

Definitely doesn't make any sense but we will see if more comes out in the next 24 hours.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Larnach will now be fighting for a job in the majors (as well as Wallner), and both could end up starting at AAA. Taylor is the 4th outfielder. Gordon and Farmer bench guys. Jeffers catcher. Solano can backup first for sure and elsewhere. So that could be the Twins bench, rotating into a positional play to give a regular time as a DH. Was kind of expecting them to make the move. Paddack and Lewis will both open season on 60 IL. They can be moved there now. (Twins could also put Centerino and, possibly, Balazovic on the same list, if they wish to give them major league money and time).
stringer bell Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 The position player most likely sent to the minors is Larnach. Of course, a disabling injury would make space for Larnach and Solano.

FlyingFinn Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 I'm thinking it's a Jake Cave like signing, having depth at AAA. When a spot is needed on the 40 man, they will try run him through waivers.

Solano has hit well enough to be a viable option as a platoon DH and he’s played all over the infield. Danchat, LA Vikes Fan, SF Twins Fan and 2 others 5

Gordon sure isn't going to see time in the infield now. Unless there is actually a trade coming up with Kepler and there will be more room in LF for Gordon.
Blyleven2011 Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Get inside of falvey and lavines head and you should be able to figure out what they are doing ... I sure wish they would give the prospects more playing time , it used to be the twins way years ago ,,, We either won or lost with our prospects ... If the FO doesn't have faith in the prospects abilities I wish they would just keep their mouth shut and quit telling us how good they think they are ...

Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 This feels like a stopgap for Polanco potentially leaving... or not being healthy, I guess. It's hard to say what's up, but seeing as how he's played a lot of 2B and Farmer is more likely to back up 3B/SS, it seems like they are expecting someone in the starting lineup to be out. Yeah, there doesn't seem to be much faith in the prospects. Julien is close but clearly not close enough to prevent a signing like this, and neither is Austin Martin.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 I like that he’s a high batting average guy. Like others here I’m speculating why we gave him an MLB contract. Perhaps Falvey feels the heat on his chair and wants to roll with as many veterans as possible? SF Twins Fan 1
twinkiesfan11 Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Maybe another Garlick/Cotton type of signing? Basically a AAAA player with traits the FO likes, sign them for a low ML deal just large enough to discourage other clubs from claiming on waivers so they can be shuttled back and forth between AAA and the big league club.
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Sounds like this is insurance for Polanco coming back from his knee injury and for Kirilloff coming back from his wrist surgery. It's hard now to see how Larnach makes the team unless there is an OF trade or one of Kirilloff or Polanco can't go to start the season. Gordon is out of options and his performance last year puts him on the team, and they didn't bring in Farmer and Taylor to cut them or send them to AAA. Maybe a Kepler trade is in the works?
sampleSizeOfOne Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 I take it as perhaps the best sign available? With flexibility to fit multiple places? And sufficiently mature he'll be competitive off the bench? And if they 60manned both the players we speculate they would, we got one place to make waiver claims. Anyway, we'll see how it plays out soon enough.
TaterTot Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 I think that Solano at his best could be a dollar-store version of Luis arráez, good contact, not much power. They are going to have a fun time trying to fit 36 players on the 26 man roster though. gil4 1
twins_89 Verified Member Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 The Twins will have 3 open spots on the 40-man roster after they put Paddack, Canterino, and Lewis on the 60-day IL. Solano fills one opening. That will still leave two spots for someone to earn their way onto the 40-man roster in spring training (or for a late reliever signing).

MLB teams don’t put minor leaguers like Canterino on the major league 60-day IL. That would give him big league pay and service time. Danchat and SF Twins Fan 2
