I am wondering at this point should we even want to sign him to the 10 year deal offered?  Two mega spending teams had basic terms and balked after seeing his physical.  The reports I have read are Mets want and injury opt out if his leg does act up down the road.  That is one of the main things being discussed.  I am also wondering if the insurance companies will not cover the contract if that is the injury that happens.  Contracts like these have insurance for the team generally, meaning if the player gets a career ending injury or several seasons, insurance will pay the contract and not the team.  However, the physical may raise enough of a red flag for insurance to say we will not take on the risk, and that is why teams are balking, because if the injury does act up, they are fully on the hook for a guy that is not playing.

So,  what would the cost of insurance be on a contract like this.  I would guess somewhere near 100 times my lifetime earnings or more?

Once more, let him opt back in to year two of the original three year deal.  And he can opt out again at the end of the season. That will give time for Lewis and Lee to prepare.

Twins give Correa the 10 year 285 mill contract. Correa plays 4 good years and then his ankle gives out. Twins are cash strapped for the next 6 years. The Twins are lost in the wilderness during my years 76 thru 81. His salary rolls off the books as I gasp my last dyeing breath.

Wait a sec.

Is it possible that the information that we read about is purposely released and possibly used as manipulation?

If so... If we then take this information and then draw conclusions based upon it. Is it possible that we have been manipulated?

If so... is it possible that Wheaties is only claiming to be the "Breakfast of Champions" because they want us to think that? Is it possible that All State wants us to believe that we are in Good Hands? Are we being manipulated?

If any of this is true? I might have to think about what is making me angry and how my anger is just feeding the manipulation machine?

People, people, people.  This ain't gonna happen.  Correa is a smart young man.  So is his agent.  They know how to woo people and organizations.  This is all posturing to pressure the Mets into closing the deal.  Let's move on.  FO, time for some BIG moves.  Saying the roster so far for 2023 is ho-hum is a gross exaggeration.

This is all a ploy by Boras to get the Mets deal finished. He's not coming back here.

I agree. it's a ploy.

I think the Twins should sign Correa to a contract that is more in line with his loyalty to Minnesota. $40 million for one year, with opt outs every 30 games if he decides he wants to try for a long term deal with a team he likes more. After 60 games he can choose if he wants to return to the Twins on a week-to-week basis.

why not make it 60 million or 100 million for one year with opt outs?

"The Twins can afford it," "do whatever it takes" is all we heard for weeks from certain fans here.  IF it's an all or nothing approach.  Go all in.  We all know that he's as good as Joe Mauer maybe even better right?

All kidding aside, Correa isn't signing here.  He never wanted to stay in Minnesota and both he and Boras played the Twins like a fiddle.  Time to move on.

The Twins should find a way to sign him for 10 years. His plate is his insurance & arthritis can be treated  with drugs  We surely need Correa to play SS. Farmer & Lewis can play 3B & fill in at SS. Someday Correa can play 1B & DH. You gotta' believe that we'll get our money's worth & Correa will get into the Hall of Fame. If this happens then I'll celebrate the possibility of having many winning seasons with Correa aboard. If it doesn't happen then Correa is not willing to bet on himself for the extra years. I still don't believe that Correa wants to move to 3B and it doesn't make sense for the Mets to pay him that much money to play 3B.

I don't believe that this rumor is a ruse. Correa went to the open market and ran into some roadblocks. His free agency has made him realize that he needs to bet on himself first and then the money that he deserves will come. He should know that there's more to life than money. Hopefully the Twins will deal with him as fairly as possible and he will sign. That can only lead to other top players being willing to come to Minnesota. It needs to start with someone. First Buxton and now Correa. We've also got a good bullpen. It's time for optimism.

The Twins will run into the same issues as the Mets regarding insurance coverage.  It would have to be a different insurance  company than the Mets and have differing actuarial tables that would allow us to offer different years/amounts than the Mets.  Otherwise, this comes down to his choice of teams/locations.

I'm not so sure.  The risk in the insurance is likely primarily in years 8-12.   So on a 8-9 year contract the insurance agents may be willing to take on the risk,  especially if structured in such a way where more of the contract is front loaded vs later in the contract.    Its becoming fairly clear the Mets are unwilling or unable to add more salary to the next few years.

I'm not sure it comes to choice of locations ... I think it comes down to length of contract for the reason you said, insurability. But ... not sure how short/long the contract needs to be for the insurance company to get on board.

That said, I'd still offer a contract.

That said, it still won't be the offer he and Boras take.

I’d welcome him back if the Mets back out. But I’m sure as hell not sticking to the original 10/$285 offer. His leverage if the Mets back out is down to nothing. I’d do the 3/$105 contract again with no opt outs.

Report: ‘Strong Possibility’ Twins Steal Correa from Mets

Interesting.  But I'm not holding my breath any longer.  Heck, I may not live to see Correa sign anywhere.  And I ain't planning on dieing any time soon.

It's actually the teams spending above the luxury tax who can't afford a big useless contract. $30M of dead money for Correa will cost them $57M due to penalties. The Twins don't spend anywhere near the luxury tax limit so they can easily afford $28M of dead money 8 years from now.

10/285 is a fair deal. If he provides 35 WAR they break even. He should be able to provide that in 6 seasons.

I don't know.  Depends on what the medicals reveal about his ankle.  If it's that serious of an issue for two teams to get cold feet about him, i'd shorten the length of the contract considerably.

There is absolutely no sense in offering a 10 year contract that will take this guy into his 40's when his ankle and back are long term issues.  And if the Twins get cold feet and reduce the offer I don't blame them one bit.

Now reports are coming out that the Mets are frustrated and considering walking away from Correa

https://www.sny.tv/articles/source-mets-very-frustrated-carlos-correa-2023

Interesting.  Makes me even more leery about what the Twins supposedly offered him.  The one thing they do have in their favor is that Correa does not really want to play in Minnesota for the rest of his career.  I still think he works something out with the Mets at the end of the day.

Same contract...3/100 with opt outs each year. I'm sure he wants this to end...gives him another opportunity next year. It's Deja vu all over again on Ground hogs day.

Ain't gonna happen folks. Minnesota is flyover country, the team's going nowhere, and players have no desire to play here. The Twins are the proverbial unpopular kid hoping to get asked to the school prom by the star quarterback. Is it theoretically possible? I guess so. But getting your hopes up for something like this will only lead to crushing disappointment.

Best to face reality and resign yourself to the fact that Brandon Belt and Michael Wacha are the best we're gonna get.

This is coming to a resolution fairly quickly.   Likely the mets and this is just posturing to get over the final leg,  or a shorter deal with more guaranteed money than what the mets are offering currently will get it done.  If it doesn't get resolved by monday will likely see him pivot to the Twins.

He's not coming back, we need to move and get some talent on this roster. Joey Gallo hitting .160 isn't bringing me to Target Field

All those articles about what correa was going to do with our offer reminded me of when I wanted to ask out the hot girl in high school, wondering what I could promise her so she’d give me a chance. Meanwhile she was texting 3 stud athletes from the school two towns over. Never had a chance

The Mets have ZERO reason to be frustrated. They jumped in with an offer knowing full well the Giants had concerns. What are they frustrated about? The player not compromising?!? Why would he when the team ALREADY knew there was an issue yet offered and agreed to terms with him?

Only team that should be frustrated is the Giants, who got stood up after 12 hours, not one month like the Mets got.

Who cares?  I hope Mets sign him.  He won't make the Twins contenders.  He's a water of time.  Plus you can't use him as a center piece to build around if there isn't sufficient payroll.  It's a lost cause.  Let it go already.
