Maybe for Seattle, but based on his current season he would not play a game over just about anyone we put out there at DH or 1B. He is slashing .216/.349/.690 with 4 HR in 212 PA. He is walking at a high rate and not striking out.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 So both Detroit and Cleveland are rumored to be open to moving some interesting starters. Surely the cost would be frightful, but of course, this occurs with two division rivals that certainly would not trade them to the Twins.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2022 Posted July 28, 2022 The Astros must feel pretty strongly about getting OF help if they're dangling a decent starting pitcher. Urquidy doesn't do much for me as he gives up way too much contact. But I wonder if they'd listen about one of the arms if Kepler and their choice or Gordon or Celestino were part of a package. I'd have thought Kepler was trade poison for AL teams, but Benentendi just got dealt so maybe not.

What do you mean about trade poison?

Without wading into those waters too deeply, I figured plenty of AL teams wouldn't want to trade for a guy they can't take with them to clinch a series in Toronto. But seems like that was an incorrect assumption considering Benentendi's move.

Edit.... And he's already backtracking on that! Shocker.

That's pretty low in my book, I'm sure they're happy that his sudden shift could goose the return but also offended that he thought so little of the team and community to only care to do so once he was sent to NY.

FlyingFinn Verified Member Posted July 28, 2022 Posted July 28, 2022 SKOR North’s Darren Wolfson speculates that the Twins would be one of many interested parties if the Giants did shop Rodon, as Minnesota “were right there” in trying to sign Rodon last winter. (From mlbtraderumors.com)

(From mlbtraderumors.com) If it was the additional year and not the AAV that scared them away, then it makes some sense. I'd imagine it was probably both given his injury history and the FOs refusal to go in on pitching. Rodon also holds a player opt out which further complicates things. I don't know why teams like SF or Baltimore, who are 3 or so games back of the WC, are looking at selling players like Rodon or Trey Mancini. It's not a great look, and if I'm a fan of either club, I'm pissed.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Mets pick up Tyler Naquin from Cinci, for minor league fill. I might be mistaken, but my estimation is that puts the Mets payroll just over 290 bazillion. Or about 100 bazillion less than the Dodgers.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 The mariners gave up the top of their farm for Castillo. That's a lot of very highly rated prospects.
big dog Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 Four prospects for Castillo, including #1, #3, and #5. Wow.
CRF Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 Seattle traded four guys for Castillo. One possible target for us went bye bye.
In My La Z boy Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 Seattle starting staff looks fierce. I would agree with the Twins Front office on NOT making this deal. Major haul for Cincy. Got the Mariners top 2 prospects, both Top 50 - and Seattle's #10, and another guy.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 According to BTV the Twins could have traded a package of Larnach, Lewis, Woods-Richardson and Balazovic and nearly matched the deal. The Mariners offer is still better though since Marte is a better headliner of the deal and Lewis is a question mark. In order to win the deal they would need to add something significant like Rodriguez in place of Balazovic.
CRF Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 If the Twins are serious, and they want to get ANY of these arms that are out there, they're going to have to up the ante to land them. I have a hard time believing they'll do that, and maybe they really shouldn't. I'm not smart enough to know the answer to that. No doubt we need help. This team is cratering right now.

Do they have the prospects to up the ante? They certainly couldn’t match Marte.
4twinsJA Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 After last night, I am in the sell camp. Picking up a couple pitchers will not make enough impact to help Twins win playoff series.
strumdatjag Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 The Twins need to make an addition(s) but a less bold (costly) addition(s).
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 I want this team to add, be better, not fold the tent, and to make the playoffs, and hopefully make some noise. But as much as I would love to have a guy like Castillo...WOW...3 of the Mariner's top 10 for a little under a year and a half just sounds crazy to me. I just can't see doing that unless you really believed a guy was the final piece to the puzzle.

I just can't see doing that unless you really believed a guy was the final piece to the puzzle. I'm with you Doc. We've been doing so badly lately is because we have had so many holes for so long that were created and others not filled that we're reaping the outcome now. To counter this is not to sell but to finally fill those holes. We are still in it and we can turn it around with right moves. It would have been easier to have avoided those deficit and fill the other needs in the off season but what is is what is. Castillo has set the standard, and this FO needs to work their butts off to fill those holes that were neglected
dxpavelka Verified Member Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 Mariners trade for Luis Castillo. Based on the return the Reds got, what would the asking price have been for the Twins to have made a similar deal. My guess: Royce Lewis (or Austin Martin), Emanuel Rodriguez, Jordan Balozovic & Louis Varland. Do / Should we have made that offer? Do / Should we make the same / a similar offer for Montas or Mahle or someone else?

If they match BTV it will take Larnach, Lewis, Woods-Richardson and Balazovic. That still wouldn’t be enough because though the value is the same the Mariners offer has the better headliner. Replace Balazovic with Rodriguez and I think Castillo is a Twin.
