The guy I thought could be a hitter like Frank Thomas turned out to be closer to Mark Reynolds.

mnfireman Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I can think of few others I'd DFA before Cotton....
kydoty Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Yep, the next time we see Sano at the plate, it will be in another team’s uniform.
ScottyB Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Cotton, Aaron Sanchez DFA’d, Sano to 60 day IL, Lopez and Fullmer activated. Kirilloff to IL, Cave selected. Mahle not yet on active roster, but on 40 man. Leon not yet on 40 man.

Sanchez was the pitcher I was failing to guess, when looking at the mlb.com 40-man, putting them smack dab at 40. At last count, there are 27 players on the active roster; I am guessing Mark Contreras heads back to St Paul given that Cave probably usurps whatever remaining role he had. / edit - wait, if Celestino is still on paternity leave, then the roster is set, and the mlb.com site probably just doesn't have a way to reflect his status. One of those two goes down in a day or two.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Ok I’m not against a Sanchez DFA, but who’s the #6 starter now? Sands? Hernandez? Balazovic? Canterino + bullpen?

ScottyB Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Sanchez was #5. Ryan, Gray, Bundy and Archer. Now add Mahle. There’s still Smeltzer at St. Paul.
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Watch, no one will pick up Sanchez and he will wind up back at St. Paul. Hopefully, the same for Cotton although it would not surprise me if a team that wasn't able to trade for a reliever claimed him as a consolation prize.

Sanchez was going to be DFA'd even if he threw a no-hitter. That's why Smeltzer wasn't the one called up. Don't waste the option on him.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Ugh, forgot about Smeltzer and for good reason. Boy, the back of the rotation is still a problem.
ScottyB Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Since Mahle is not yet on the active roster, the Twins will have an interesting choice to make when they add him. Since Joe Smith is DFA’d, there aren’t many pitchers to get rid of left on the active roster. Do we really want to send down McGill or Moran with their 1.93 ERA’s? That leaves the likes of Duffey, Pagan, and even Theilbar (less likely since he’s a lefty). We need to stay at 13 pitchers. Starters: Ryan, Gray, Mahle, Bundy, and Archer. (5). Bullpen: Duran, Lopez, Fullmer, Jax (locks) makes 9. That leaves 4 of the following: McGill, Moran, Duffey, Theilbar, Pagan. Pagan is under contract next year. Do the Twins cut ties with underachieving veterans or demote younger guys who are more consistent? Personally I’d cut ties with Duffey, but I’m guessing McGill will be sent down instead. What do you guys think?

ScottyB Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 I knew he was on the 40 man. It still comes down to the 5 pitchers I mentioned. One needs to come off the active roster. The three veterans have no options to be sent down, which is why I said I would cut Duffey. Pagan not under contract for next year, but arb eligible. Theilbar arb eligible for 2 more seasons, Duffey will be a free agent at end of the year. The younger guys have 5 to 6 years of control and obviously options.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Moran is being optioned to activate Mahle.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Pagan and Duffey…you better pitch like you want to stay my. I would’ve kept Cotton and Moran over either of you right now!
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Pagan and Duffey survive another day.
ScottyB Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Interesting that they optioned the lefty., leaving Theilbar as the lone lefty on the staff. I also agree that they should’ve kept Cotton as well.
big dog Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 I'm a little surprised about Cotton, but realistically I was ready to DFA him last week. I shouldn't let a couple of good innings against the Tigers persuade me of anything. Pagan's a tease. Such great stuff- if we could just help him harness it...I'm willing to keep trying, at least in low-pressure situations.

stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Two stats seem to be telling and in both Cotton is well below average. His FIP is 5.49 and he’s yielded 1.8 HR per 9. As far as Moran is concerned, the 5.8 BB per 9 doesn’t generate a lot of trust.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Garlick has been placed on the IL, and Celestino activated.
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Interesting. So Kepler comes on for Contreras in a couple of days, leaving Jake Cave on the 26 man roster? Seems right.
Azviking101 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Still fail to understand some of the roster decisions. Moran has been an asset in the pen lately, yet they want to keep Duffey and Pagan instead. I understand they’d have to DFA them, but all the analytics show they’re both just bad pitchers. And Archer starting over Smeltzer who has a quality start in 6 of 10 starts. Archer won’t record a quality start all year. Once again I realize they would have to DFA but he provides such negative value as a starter. Move him to the pen or cut bait! Of course they’d have to move on from Duffey or Pagan for that to happen. Rocco continues to believe Pagan has been one of the best relievers in baseball the last few years.

In Pagan's last 12 outings.... since the blow up against Cleveland.... he has been pretty great. 11.1 IP, 3.18 ERA, 2.23 FIP, 1.91 xFIP, 21 K's, 2 BB. The game against San Diego he took the loss for, the hits against him were a grounder an average 1B makes a play on and a flair off the end of the bat that fell into RF. He does give up the occasional long ball, but when he isn't walking guys he is a + reliever.
