Danchat Verified Member Posted September 16, 2022 Author Posted September 16, 2022 Bailey Ober has been activated, and to make room, Jharel Cotton has been DFA'd (for the fourth time this year!).
ScottyB Verified Member Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Only the 4th time for Cotton? It feels like the 43rd time. Larnach DH’d for the Saints Thursday , Jeffers scheduled to DH on Friday. Both should be ready very soon. That will mean two more cuts to the Forty man to reinstate each of them. Rotation for the 5 game series against the Guardians- Ober on Friday, Winder and I assume Varland (as 29th man) on Saturday, Ryan on Sunday and Gray on Monday.
ScottyB Verified Member Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Anyone care to speculate about who will come off the 40 man to reinstate Larnach and Jeffers? I’d say the most susceptible would be the two Hamiltons, Aaron Sanchez, and Mark Contreras, maybe Drew Stotman. I’ll reserve judgment on Jake Cave who will come off this winter. We still have a ton of other guys on the 60 day IL who will have to be reinstated for the off season - Lewis, Kirilloff, Maeda, Paddack, Alcala are locks. Next level guys - Coulombe, Stashak, Romero. For sure gone - Sano. Already gone, but still listed on the official 40 man, 60 day IL - Dobnak.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 I don't know if either Larnach or Jeffers will make it back for meaningful games. If the Twins don't win the Cleveland series, it could be argued that the chances for postseason are gone. Caleb Hamilton is superfluous if Jeffers is in fact ready to play. If Larnach is ready to play, there's really no point in keeping Contreras on the 40-man. Also, if the season is over, Billy Hamilton and Sandy Leon can be jettisoned. If the Twins do lose the Cleveland series, I'd bring up Wallner and put Varland in the rotation and perhaps SWR for a cup of coffee.
chpettit19 Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Jorge, Jeffers, Larnach all in St Paul on rehab assignments. Dobnak outrighted to St Paul. Contreras recalled. Ober activated. Cotton DFA'd (I know those have already been listed, just trying to cover every move they made today). Garlick to 10 day IL.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 Kepler (finally) to the IL (wrist). Wallner (finally) to the active roster. Strotman (finally) DFAed.
kydoty Verified Member Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 Fighting for our playoff lives with our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th best outfielders in the organization on IL. Amazing we got this far.

I keep thinking about the, forgive me, lame replacements we have for these three players right now on the roster, and can't wait for the return.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 I would love to see Peacock and Sisk up here rather than Pagan and Sanchez right now, considering Baldelli won't use either of the vets in a game...instead wearing out the good bullpen arms.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 I started a separate thread, but will update it here, too ... Kepler to the IL, Wallner added and up, Strotman DFA'd, Varland up as the 29th man for the DH
whosafraidofluigirussolo Verified Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Dereck Rodriguez is in the pen for game 2 of the double-header and apparently Trevor Megill is on the COVID IL. Hope he didn't cough on any of his teammates last night.
SanoMustGo Verified Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 This team will be lucky to win 3 or 4 more games. What a mess to end the season. Don't bother bringing back any injured players.

Jeffers and Larnach replace Leon and Billy Hamilton. The rotation has Gray, Ryan, Ober, Winder and Varland but before the season is over they should cut Bundy and let Woods-Richardson debut. Bundy has earned his paycheck but there is really no point keeping him around any longer. Edouard Julien should also get to debut after Wichita is done with the playoffs.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I would love to see Peacock and Sisk added, in place of a couple of guys who won't be around in 2023. Could Peacock be a worthwhile piece in '23? You don't know if you don't give him a try! Here's my list of the 1`4 Twins that will probably be gone from the roster in the off-season. Do you agree? Archer, Bundy, Fulmer, Rodriguez, Romero, Sanchez, the Hamiltons (2), Sanchez the Catcher, Leon, Correa, Sano, Cave, Contreras. You alwys need a couple of bodies to move off if you sign a free agent or three. Guys on the bubble are: Coulombe, Megill, Sands, Smeltzer, Stashak, Palacios, Garlick. You make a hard decision if Thielbar will still be production in '23. You have to make arbitration decisions on Urshela and Pagan. Balazovic and Henriquez stay because they still have promise and are...young. You lose Balazovic as he will be a minor league free agent. Not alot of names to add now from the minors. Helman, Williams, Woods-Richardson, Sisk should be considered. Julien and Isola are the only possible danger guys at AA. Do you pick up Bundy's option? Go after Fulmer? Bring back Leon on a minor league contract and have him teach guys how to bunt? Is Sands a starter or a relief arm? Do you keep Coulombe and Stashak on minor league deals (and Romero, too). And, do you find a way to add Cotton to the 40-man roster...again?
lecroy24fan Verified Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Speaking of Henriquez he was called up today and Rodriguez optioned.

Peacock, OTOH, in his time at AAA with the Saints, has amassed an OPS-against of .739, which would be a little worse than the MLB average, except he isn't even facing major leaguers there. He's 34 now, so his future is behind him, and his status is solidly "Break Glass In Emergency" only. Pass. The Pitching Pipeline™ is hopelessly clogged if he plays any role in 2023 planning.

The radio team, during the broadcast today, said that Megill was already back in the Twins clubhouse this morning with his teammates and wanting to get re-instated off the Covid list already. Nope, doesn’t make sense to me, either.
lecroy24fan Verified Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 He likely had a false positive test.
whosafraidofluigirussolo Verified Member Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Speaking of Henriquez he was called up today and Rodriguez optioned. Updating this as Rodriguez was DFA'd. Rodriguez must be out of options, right? They didn't need a 40-man spot so that's the only reason I can think that they would DFA him. Seeing this amount of churn at the end of the Twins' pitching depth chart really highlights that they haven't subbed for a couple of the weaker spots on the position-player side like Palacios and Caleb Hamilton. There certainly are some understandable reasons for that—Hamilton could be DFA to make room for Jeffers or Larnach, for example, and there may not be a better shortstop-capable backup IF option than Palacios—but it's still kind of a drag to see these roster spots used on one rookie who's scuffling when called on to play regularly, and another who's hitless and mostly riding the pine.

LewFordLives Verified Member Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 What is it about Cotton that the front office doesn't like? There's been moments where he's been really good. I would rather they kept him over Sanchez or Pagan.

He's carried an unsustainable BABIP of .182 and below average walk and strikeout numbers. The chances of Cotton keeping a low ERA are pretty remote over time.
mnfireman Verified Member Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Urshela has been worth $12.8M this year, according to FanGraphs, while earing $6.55M. If his arbitration comes in at $8-10M, which I think I read somewhere that would be his projected salary, then bring him back. He has been productive and healthy, something that can't be said for everyone on this team the last 2 seasons. Pagan can be traded, if they can find a taker who thinks they can fix him, or non-tendered. Either option would be fine with me.

I agree that he was a clearly better option out of the bullpen than Pagan, all year.

He is a decent player, over 30, who has stayed on the field all year. Will he sustain that next year? For an elite team, he wouldn't be a regular and since he has limited upside, a non-contender wouldn't take him on. The Twins have a bunch of players that might end up at third base--Lee, Lewis, Miranda, perhaps even Arraez--but given the number of injuries that have occurred, Gio might get regular at-bats throughout 2023. The Twins will probably keep him and they probably should. Pagan's time with the Twins absolutely needs to end.
