jz7233 Provisional Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Thorpe, Smeltzer, Stashak have passed the test so far. They all seem to have good presence and stuff. All relievers give up runs. All of them. So don't expect these three to be perfect but I certainly like what I have seen from them. Add in Rogers, May, Harper and Littell. I am not so down on Stewart either but like him in long relief. I would like at least one guy in the pen that can eat up innings for short starts. I think Duffey is doing fine so far. May really needs to work on his command. I am not so sure about Harper, Littell and Stewart, especially Stewart, I don't think he can survive in the major league.
operation mindcrime Verified Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 From the MLBTR article: "The Minnesota org scooped him up for a $1.8MM guarantee. There were a series of roster bonuses that kicked off beginning 130 days into the season, a point less than two weeks away. While the Twins won’t owe any of the extra contemplated cash, they’ll be on the hook for the remainder of the salary..." Fair to assume the writer's primary source was somebody on the beancounting side of the Twins front office. Because being on the hook for what I'm estimating to be $688,888.89 is not a phrase the fan on the street would probably have come up with in regards to a major league budget. Nor should it have anything to do with anything. It's a cost of doing business. It's noise in the system, lint in the filter.Lint in the belly button!

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 I’m not sure if that reflects more poorly on Bremer or Falvine. If forced to chose, I’d go Falvine. Bremers not making roster decisions.Based on my experiences with the Bremer’s commentary, if he was the GM, I’d put the team’s over/under win total at about 20. So far I have yet to come across a poster on this site I’d peg below 35.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Since the beginning of the 2018 season (51 starts) Odorizzi has averaged 5.75 innings, more than a half inning higher than league average. In 2019 he’s over 5.5 innings per start still a third inning over average.Odo is an adequate innings eater but throw those numbers out against the Yankees. That team will sit back and spit on borderline pitches all night long and when they do swing, balls tend to go a long way.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Torres doesn't have any options left, so if you want to remove him from the 25-man, you have to remove him from the 40-man too. Similar to Morin, Magill, etc. That way they can make even more of that sweet waiver claim money!, as in the cases of the M boys.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Stewart is not going to survive in the major league. He did look pretty nervous out there. He might not survive mean streets of Eagan.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 So the person I have the most confidence in order for tonight is... RogersHarperDuffySmeltzerMayStashak (assume unavailable)Thorpe (assume unavailable)Torres Send helpHarper has thrown three days in a row. Rogers 34 pitches over the last two. Duffey 29 over the last two. I would assume also unavailable. So, Smeltzer, May and Torres are it tonight. I suspect Odorizzi is going to take the ball as long as he can. I don’t know who else was available. But there probably should have been at least one more add. Romero has been mediocre since coming off the DL, but he’s a reasonably rested arm.

And combined with his performance that day, he's at best a "walking wounded wing" option tonight. Given the abrupt axing by FalVine of Parker after his stink-up-the-joint effort, none of the veteran RPs are immune from having the boom lowered on them too if they fail miserably tonight.

jokin Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 . We need someone to go out and pitch the 6th and 7th after Odorizzzi hopefully gives us a good 5. In other words, I need to call Vegas and put down a quick C-note on both the Yanks and the over-under?
Richie the Rally Goat Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 He has gone over 6 innings twice all year. Last time on May 10 while he was still on his hot streak before he returned to his normal form. He just throws too many pitches an inning because he can't out guys away so they foul off high fastball after high fastball. Don't get me wrong, he'll give us at least 4 to 5 tonight, maybe but no more than 6. We don't have enough pitchers left to go an inning apiece to bridge a 4 inning bullpen need. We need someone to go out and pitch the 6th and 7th after Odorizzzi hopefully gives us a good 5. You can tell me your narrative all you want, the data says his average start is longer than league average. You can harken back to Jack Morris and Bert Blyleven, but those days are over. Agreed on the need for relief pitching, disagreed on the cause. It’s not Jake Odorizzi, it’s Derek Falvey
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 ... Romero is nowhere to be found... Good point. Almost at this point, just call him up and hope he catches fire.
ashbury Verified Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 He has gone over 6 innings twice all year.If you've seen the look on his face when the manager comes out to get him, you'd know Odo's ready response to that one. It would be similar to that one line from Ghostbusters, "everything was fine with our system until..." / just like any starting pitcher worth having on the team, of course.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Well, I'm still wondering who is in the Twins starter pipeline when we enter the off-season, as we potentially have three guys leaving. Of course, seeing them throw from the bullpen in a plus for both sides. Torres and soon Cody Allen. Let's just throw junk from other teams out there. But I guess otehr teams also like what we have, what with the claims and all. Is Dave Hale and Oliver Drake available, by the way?

twins_89 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 In Spring training the primary bullpen options were Rogers, May, Parker, A. Reed, May, Romero, Magill, Hildenberger, Harper, and Mejia. Out of that group 4 have been DFAd (Parker, A. Reed, Magill, and Mejia) and 2 more are in AAA (Romero and Hildenberger). Of the remaining guys May and Harper have been OK, but they definitely don't inspire confidence when they take the mound in the late innings of close games. Basically the Twins have one pitcher from their initial bullpen that should be pitching in high leverage situations. Looking back I think it's fair to say the front office made a massive mistake when they failed to add any competent relievers in the off-season.

VATwinsFan Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 At the rate this is going, assuming the Twins don't trade for a couple of arms, they'll be calling up pitchers from Pensacola.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Moves need to be made, but this sudden cutthroat approach does not make a lot of sense. These players were felt to be good enough by management a couple of months ago. I also don't understand the idea of dropping pitchers before having replacements for them. This can only make the problems worse.

A replacement might not be better, but it would be really hard for whomever they call up to be worse than Parker.
Yawn Gardenhose Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Say what you will about Torres, but at least he's not Matt Belisle. You *know* that Falvine at least texted Belisle to see what he's up to, right?
