What Did You Do To Mitch Garver?

Garver apparently didn't run his idea, of tweeting this, past the PR folks, who surely would have advised him, "don't feed the trolls, not even that way".

/ though, I'm wary of anything posted April 1

What happened? All I can see is his statement that he's leaving Twitter for the time being?

I never really understood the reason why people tweet at professional sports players or actors or the like. I've had twitter since 2012 I believe and I really only use it to follow sports writers. I've never felt the need to tweet at someone, especially someone I don't know and haven't had any interaction with, that they suck at something.

I don't think Mitch should read Twitter. Its reputation for allowing shall we say "less than coherent" statements is well known. I don't have a Twitter account, and any inclination I ever had to get one was buried in 2015. btw, I don't think Mitch's tweet will improve the situation at all.

Meh, Twitter is fine to follow what you want and get updates. I don't post anything... Nor do I care to post and build a #brand. If being off the platform helps his mental state go for it.

Twitter seems like it does more harm than good for professional athletes.  Its bad enough that they get yelled at by hateful fans in the stadium (like Adam Jones and the racist Red Sox fan), I don't think fans need a direct channel to spout their BS at them.  I support his decision to not have social media if he doesn't want it.

Twitter is tough for sure, I can't imagine being famous and having to deal with less than ideal people.....

But, I do like Twitter for following a handful of writers and sites (Keith LAW, Eno Sarris, Dan Szymbroski, Paste magazine, Auschitz, Craig Calcaterra, and a few others)

Twitter can be toxic, sure. The bigger problem is it's an echo chamber. It's nearly impossible to see a viewpoint from someone you don't agree with, unless you strangely subscribe to people you dislike.

Yeah, but even then every issue is black and white. Either Garver SUCKS or he's AWESOME - there's no real discussion. While I agree it's a decent place for breaking sports news (I follow tweets during stuff like rain delays to see the status), most of the tweets out there are just there to provoke knee-jerk reactions. We'd all probably be doing ourselves a favor by using social media less these days, no matter what our opinions are.

I hear ya. I gave up Facebook (and everything Facebook owns) along with Twitter.

I still use LinkedIn but very sparingly.

And you know what? I don't miss a dang thing by not using FB.

Twitter is no better or worse than any other social media. I don't know what the issue was, but any athlete who's reading his mentions is doing it wrong, IMO.

Personally, I only keep Facebook as a means of contacting people I would otherwise lose touch with, but rarely look at it. Twitter is fun because you can follow folks from many different sports/interests and have it in one feed. But the block button is definitely your friend.

Twitter is a cesspool and should not be used by anyone.

What this guy said.  I use only Facebook because I've lived in many places and have spread out friends and family to stay connected with.

Twitter?  Useless drivel machine.  Hell, it's very nature is designed to limit thoughtful comments.

Troll much? Just follow a few people, accounts, and it's quite good.

He's not trolling, Twitter is a cesspool. Just because there's 0.01% of redeeming value from it doesn't change that.

I'm also convinced that its presence directly correlates to a global drop in man kind's collective IQ.

I have no doubt Mitch was getting some serious hot takes on Twitter from middle-aged men who's profile picture is a selfie of their double chin, in which they consistently spelled words incorrectly.

I think you may have misread the post you quoted. They said middle aged men, not middle ages man like you!
