Michael Reed traded

This looks like a something is better than nothing trade.  Reeds profile is significantly better than Andreoli but Andreoli doesn't take a up a 40 man spot and he could help the MLB club in a pinch.  He is a no power onbase guy in the mold of Zach Granite I presume.

This deal is better than nothing but the Giants are the clear winners here IMO.

For the other reasons you outlined, the trade is pretty even IMO. Players lose some value as soon as they are added to anyone's 40-man, and then they lose additional value when their last minor league option is used up. Reed might be a better overall player than Andreoli, but ability that can't show up on the field due to all the roster rules (and by having 4 or 5 guys deemed better in front of him) is not of value at all.

Reed seems like the clear winner here. :) Good for him.

imo the real winner would appear to be Jake Cave. If a player like Andreoli were to see significant time with the Twins in 2019 then the Twins would likely be in trouble. I see Andreoli as AAA depth and nothing more.

With Granite and Reed out of the way, Cave should have the 4th OF job locked down. This also clears out room for LaMonte Wade to be the obvious next OF coming up from the minors.

Wade has had a good spring. Very reliable depth imo.

I would not pencil in Cave to the 25 man roster yet.  Last week Adrianza, Astrudillo, and Cruz all played the outfield, and both Kepler and Rosario can play centerfield if needed.

I think that Cave, Astrudillo, and Hildenberger are in a fight for the last 2 spots.

I believe that cave is going down to minors and i have heard that hildenberg might start there as well. This would put Astrudillo and Austin on the club for the short run. It would make since in they would control Austin and Astudillo would give them viable third baseman and would let them move Marwin Gonzales around the diamond. Hildenberger would have plane pass ready come when they need pitching.

Obviously something is better than nothing, but I find hard to believe Reed wasn’t worth at least a rookie ball player, or another bullpen arm. However, Andreoli was the 13th fastest player in the MLB in 2018, so perhaps the FO plans to use him like the Cubs and Royals have with Terrance Gore.

I totally agree with your line of thinking.  I wasn't digging that deep in my analysis.  Just comparing the two players current ability and ceilings.  Reed is fast, has decent OBP numbers and seemed to be gaining HR power.  I don't know much about Andreoli but a quick look at his numbers and he appears to have good speed and likely better than average defense and that is about it.  So his ceiling appears limited IMO.  That's why I initially felt the Giants won that deal.

You are correct though that the Twins couldn;t justify keeping Reed so maybe it is a more even deal than I thought at first.  I guess you could say they traded Granite for 700,000 in International bonus and then got Granite back again in the form of Abdreoli.  Not a bad get for just claiming a player.  Here's hoping they signed a decent international player or two with the money.

there’s a fighting chance Astudillo is the third baseman and Marwin is the 4th OF on opening day.

The deal makes sense in that the Twins needed a AAA center fielder and they were probably convinced Reed wouldn't make it through waivers. With the losses of Granite and Reed Minnesota would have been getting pretty thin on major league ready players who you'd feel comfortable playing CF for any length of time.

They still have 3 who started in cf at the mlb level last year.

Not a significant move worth squabbling over. 4th or 5th outfielders are a dime a dozen and with Lamonte Wade ready in the wings it's probably best for Reed to go somewhere else.

FYI, those of you who praised the Marwin Gonzalez aquisition need to take a look see at how he is performing this spring. Today his BA dropped to a measly .115 and he struck out 4 times. Was not a big fan of him before the trade and still not. Cave, Astudillo, Adrianza, and Austin can do everything Gonzalez can do. To me, all his signing did was create a problem with the 25 man roster. He's not that good.

The AP reported it as Reed for Andreoli and Cash.  I don't see anyone names Sash in the Giant's organization. Hopefully cash wasn't the change found in Zaidi pocket and can buy someone else useful to the team.

Astudillo played CF for the Twins last year, but I have no desire to see him out there again. After Buxton and Kepler there aren't a lot CF options that inspire confidence. I'm personally not a fan of Cave's CF defense and really don't want to see him manning the position for any extended stretch. With Granite and Reed gone the cupboard was also pretty bare at AAA/AA in terms of competent defensive center fielders.

The other option is letting Gonzalez play more in the outfield too. Frankly, I think he's a better outfielder than an infielder.

Something for nothing. AAA depth.

Yesiree. The fact that we got anything for Reed is a bonus. That said, don't be surprised if Reed ends up starting for the Giants and makes the All-Star team. Ouch!

Winners--Reed, Cave, and the non-roster pitchers looking for a spot in the bullpen. It makes a bench of Austudillo, Austin, Garver, and Adrianza possible.

The bench, as listed would be better is if Austin hit lefty and it would be good if there was a RH hitter to relieve Kepler/Rosario, but those guys will play almost every day and Marwin can fill in anywhere.

If Sano is back in a month or so, it would be interesting to see how Baldelli will maneuver especially if La Tortuga is on his bench. He'd have Gonzalez available almost everywhere along with Austudillo.

The more I think about it, the more I think another trade will happen. Austin for an out-of-options reliever makes sense.

This is the right result. Cave earned his spot with solid production over 300 ABS/80 plus games last year. He looks like a solid MLB OF, great guy to have as the 4th OF playing once or twice a week and can start if/when a starter gets hurt or doesn't hit (se Buxton,B. or Kepler, M). Wade is good AAA depth who can still develop and we have Rooker, Raley and Kirilloff right behind. Reed was a good ST story but not worth rejiggering the roster for. The OF is in pretty good shape. Now if only we could find a Bullpen.....

I wanted Reed to make the the 25-man and send Cave down (strictly to keep both of them in the system.)     But you are right......Cave earned it last year!

Good trade.  Getting something is better than nothing.  As far as roster I think Cave is making the team.  This trade cements it.

Bench to start season

Cave

Garver

Adrianza

Astudillo

Relief Staff:

Parker

Rogers

May

Hildenberger

Meija

DL

Reed

Moya

Sano

Magill

For me the question is do they keep both Harper / Austin or one of Morin/Guilimet.  With more off days in the beginning of the season they could delay the decision on Austin and just go with 11 pitchers / 5 man bench.  I am expecting them to go with 4 man bench and 12 pitchers.  I also think it is highly likely they pull a trade and with this FO, very likely they could take another teams waivered player.

We are saying this was a brilliant move by the Twins ... but the Giants were absolutely desperate for an outfielder. The Giants cut Maybin after he had a DUI and Joyce for not being good enough. Adding Joyce was a desperation move they made just a couple of days ago.

They since added the grandson of Carl Yastrzemski in a move that is more to create a buzz than to field a great outfield and traded for Michael Reed.

The Twins could have gotten much more here. Spring training is about to end and the Giants had no outfield! The Giants are the winners here a thousand times over.

Maybe the SF front office feels that they have no chance at contention this season, and their strategy was to trade for the best outfielder they could get for the fixed price of Andreoli or his equivalent - nothing that mortgages the future. There are surely other guys about as good as Michael Reed who SF could go after, and perhaps there was no other trade partner than SF for a fourth outfielder caliber of player with no roster flexibility. I suspect SF knew they could stand their ground in this negotiation, with days to go before Opening Day roster cutdowns.

1. Who used the word brilliant but you?

2. The Giants knew Read would be released and they could try to get him at no cost.  Andreaoli and cash just eliminated the small risk that someone else would pick him up.
