The Twins got crushed, fell below .500 and have three more games to play at Yankee Stadium. At least Brian Dozier extended his season-opening hitting streak, I guess.

 

The Yankees hit four homers and scored eight runs off the long ball. The Twins had six hits and eight total bases. The Yankees' No. 3 hitter, Didi Gregorius, drove in four runs on one swing. The Twins' No. 3 hitter, Miguel Sano, was 0-for-4.

 

Jake Odorizzi gave up five runs on five hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings. But, the game wasn't completely out of hand when he exited, as the score was "only" 5-1 at that point.

 

Alan Busenitz and Tyler Kinley had rough nights. Busenitz allowed a runner he inherited from Trevor Hildenberger to score and even gave up a pair of his own runs while recording just two outs. Kinley was clobbered for five runs and he only got one out. His ERA is up to 24.30.

 

That set the scene for LaMarre to pitch. He topped out at 75.4 mph and gave up a home run over his 2/3 of an inning. Not quite Chris Gimenez yet, but the way the bullpen has performed of late, LaMarre may have some additional opportunities on the mound in his future.

Odorizzi is tossing meatballs. Just watch the highlight videos and see that the ones tagged were right is sweet spots, if not middle zone, and not near the catcher's target. 2 more of his 14 walks in 26 innings scored. Castro's body language on Stanton's homer is priceless. I am more frustrated with his performance than the expected results of the rest of the pen. Kinley? What a waste. Time to cut bait on an experiment that never should have been and that continues to hurt this team. 

 

Another game with one run? Could have been a pitcher's gem by the Twins and still a loss with that kind of support.

If they keep him and take no one then they aren’t forced to keep a dud on the roster.

Most of our players look glazed over when we are in NY.  For the life of me, I have no idea why Joe would bunt in the first inning.  I have no idea why anyone would do that unless they are Phil Rizzuto, Luis Aparicio, or Maury Wills....Not sure I can recall the last time he bunted for a hit and besides, he has to come into that band box thinking to drive the baseball.  He conceded the at bat right there and that started the game on its course.  

 

I really don't want to hear "if he bunts for a hit it's a good bunt"

That is a poor mindset for Mauer to have, imo

They didn't choose Kinley over Chargois. They chose Kinley over Bard and Burdi. Chargois DFA was much later, to make room for a different player.

Mauer was simply trying lay down a surprise bunt - the 3rd baseman was waaaay back there. He just didn't get it past the pitcher.  If Joe gets on there, he's a genius. So can we please stop making this 14-1 blowout the "Joe Mauer Bunt Game" already? We've got a lot of players to worry about. Joe Mauer isn't one of them.

I don't mind the bunt for a hit there, if they're giving it to him.

I slightly understand not dropping Kinley in a panic at 10:30 last night. That said, he can't stay on this roster much longer. Rosters are really short as it is in today's game. What really needs to happen is we need to get back into our comfy division and play with teams we are equal to. When the Twins go into NY, Boston, Houston, etc, they look a little like a B level American Legion team playing in an A level tournament, just so the brackets come out even! (I been dere, done dat). You may compete in a few games, but you really know that you can't win.

You don't even need one.    Back in the day I liked Crede, Thome and Konerko.  I even liked Ozzie more than Gardy.   Still hated the White Sox.

Yeah, the thing is, as far as I could see, their guy didn't throw a gem either.   I felt like if Tanaka had been pitching against the Yankees he would have been shelled also.    Just one of those nights with a slumping team.    Maybe Jose can right the ship.  Would be nice to win 3 one run games and take the series while being outscored by 10.
