Parker Hageman Site Manager Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Could the Big Sexy's stay in a Minnesota Twins uniform last all of two games? According to an ESPN report pitcher Bartolo Colon is mulling over retirement and his next outing may just be the determining factor."Bartolo Colón told me that he has been considering retirement and that his next start against the Dodgers could be a determining factor in making a decision," reported Marty Rivera from ESPN. In his most recent outing the 44-year-old Colon lasted four innings while surrendering four runs on eight hits. For the most part, the former Cy Young Award winning pitcher threw as usual, dotting his mid-to-upper 80s fastball on different corners of the plate and displaying difficult to square late movement. Like the majority of his season, however, Colon failed to work deep into the ballgame, getting pulled in the fifth after allowing three straight hits which tied the game. The right-hander has not worked past the fifth inning in a start since May 9th. Paul Molitor said after the game that he fully expects Colon to pitch on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Brandon Verified Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 I imagine that comment is out of frustration. He is 8 wins from becomming the winningest pitcher from the Dominican Republic. I'm sure if he can pitch 6 innings and keep is in the game his next start he will keep going. If he gets released he can say he was thinking about it a while and maybe instead of getting released he retires. mazeville 1

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Not surprising. I don't expect him to do any better against the Dodgers and he'll probably hang it up.

Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 The end result wasn't great last night but I was very impressed with his first trip through the lineup. The guy knows how to pitch and I wouldn't mind seeing another start and I don't believe it's an automatic disaster if he makes the next start. He could get lit up... He may not. Let's take a look. Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Weird. I mean, a team in contention just acquired him to be one of their starters, and he isn't sure he's good enough to be playing? Weird. adorduan, KirbyDome89, hybridbear and 2 others 5
h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Total drag. I have to see Colon in LA on Monday! Perhaps a 2 game rental. What a joke. Wait all year for these games and Falvey and Levine gives me Colon! The only good news would be he retires or leaves the Twins. Looks like the Twins will miss Kershaw (in rotation to pitch Sunday), and one of Wood or Hill. Hard to say yet with the all the Dodger pitchers available exactly who will go on what day, but Kershaw will not be pitching against the Twins. mikelink45 and hybridbear 2
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 we hear about the clubhouse a lot from some posters...... How do we think players feel about the FO giving starts to a player that is doubting he should be in teh majors anymore? mikelink45, hybridbear and h2oface 3

ToddlerHarmon Verified Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Given that he is still very effective in early innings, could he be an effective long reliever/bridge reliever? The twins have numerous starters with difficulty getting through 6 innings. Having another guy to take load off of Duffey could really help right now. PDX Twin 1

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 The evidence of him being effective in early innings this year is pretty much just this one game. I wouldn't get my hopes up on that front. Even a 8-9 ERA pitcher can string together a few scoreless innings, but I don't think it's possible to predict and avoid the blowups. Even if he pitched the rest of the season, he would only make maybe 12 more starts. 8 wins? He knows you have to get through 5 with a lead to have a chance - something he has not done in two months. I seriously doubt he can do that 8 more times ever let alone 8 more times in the next 10 weeks. I'm sure that's what is playing in his head. Doomtints and D.C Twins 2
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 Considering his career track record, and his last 4 seasons, and the fact he actually looked pretty good for the first 4 innings, I'm totally on board with a couple more starts. This could be the year he finally hits the wall and is toast! But then again, look at his career, the past 4 seasons, and the fact he won 15 games last season. Not to make any sort of excuse, but the past 10-14 days have probably created a bit of rust. (Old jokes placed here). And his Rochester appearance was pretty much a tuneup. With everyone, including the Twins, looking for help on the back end of the rotation, what could possibly be wrong with another couple of starts to see? Riverbrian and HitInAPinch 2

Albeit he's had a few decent ones lately, but Colon probably won't do any worse that what Gibby has done most of the year. I mean if Colon strings together 2 or 3 decent starts and his Era will be around 6 also?

I mean if Colon strings together 2 or 3 decent starts and his Era will be around 6 also?Understand your sentiment. I get it. I really do. But the team needs 5 starters who can pitch some innings and give the team a chance, just like all teams do. And half the teams in the league, if not more, have some questions about the back end of their rotation. Honestly, while Gibson appears to be what he is, if he could continue to, mostly, pitch the way he has since his demotion/promotion he isn't that bad. (Guy has stuff, needs to trust it and pitch angry once in a while. Does he speak Spanish?) Santiago is also OK if healthy. Not great, nothing special, but OK. While waiting for someone else, Colon is seriously not a bad card to play. Again, his career numbers, his last 4 years, his last year numbers. A last gasp? Perhaps. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
