Kennys Vargas promoted, Plouffe to DL

Rotoworld and MLBTradeRumors are reporting that the Twins have put 3B Trevor Plouffe on the 15 day DL and they've called up DH Kennys Vargas. So far in AAA, Vargas has hit .255/.353/.435 with 14 home runs. This could be his last or second-to-last shot to do something big in the majors - Park isn't gonna be in AAA forever.

Another thing:

Twins manager Paul Molitor said Sunday that Trevor May (back) will be activated from the disabled list on Monday.

Is this move going to happen later today? And who will be demoted for May?

Because we need more DH/1B type players?  I actually hope Vargas can make it, but I would also like to see Walker get a chance.

Given that Plouffe's DL stint means Sano will play third (almost) every day, it makes sense to call up a different guy to DH and Vargas is next in line.

I won't fault the Twins for doing something logical... Those moves have been few and far between this season.

I'm more curious as to who the Twins will send down to get May on the roster.

I'd like to see them keep Rosario up, along with Buxton, and send a relief pitcher down. What I'd really like to see is the Twins send Milone down again with the plan to call up Berrios in a few days ...

Probably send down one of the 28 year old "meh" relievers we have been so preciously stashing down in the bullpen....

Looking forward to seeing how Vargas in MN again, and Sano playing 3B more often. For Plouffe, guy needs to get healthy soon. The clock's ticking towards the trade deadline...

Remember when people wanted to give him a qualifying offer after this year?  I'll take a discarded box of lopsided baseballs at this point.

Totally agree. Hoping that Buxton sitting two days in a row (yesterday, and not in the lineup today) doesn't mean he'll be sent down once May is activated.  If the Twins DFA Milone again after tomorrow's start, that buy them a little time before making a roster move.  Just hope the Twins are smart enough to roll with an outfield of Rosario, Buxton, Kepler for the rest of the season.

lets not get carried away. Just cuz TR has made a couple of logical moves lately doesn't mean he'll make a third

I like the move. Vargas has ability. He's shown power and OB this season. The BA is still rather low, but I'd be interested in a month to month breakdown if anyone has one available. He started slow before picking things up, so I wonder if the BA is skewed a bit. The power and OB are more telling, yes?

That's probably the type of offers they'll receive for Plouffe too. Since he's not healthy and not producing its going to be a difficult move to make by July 31 deadline. Perhaps he could be an August deadline dump some where.

Agreed, though what are the rules with Millone this time?  Does he need to be DFA'd again?

according to mlbtr he's been dealing w/ a cracked rib. As long as this has been going on, August waivers might be the trade window

I'm curious to see how Vargas looks now days. In Seth's article about the top 5 minor league hitters for the month he had about a .200 avg with a .360 obp. How does that happen? It makes me think pitchers are doing their best not to give him anything to hit.

So glad the Twins opted not to trade Trevor Plouffe in the offseason. He's done so much to make his trade value soar this year. /sarcasm

I'm guessing, especially with Buxton sitting again today, that they send him down -- even though he has hits in each of his past four games and appears to be improving.

Boo.

Nobody was giving up anything for Plouffe in the offseason. It was the smart decision to get half a season of production and hope his value increases by the trade deadline when teams are dealing with injury and/or looking to make moves. It hasn't all worked out, but hindsight is 20/20 and I think the logic behind the move was solid. The worst case scenario is that they trade him now for the same type of marginal prospect they would've received in the offseason.

Yep, and hopefully this time someone would claim him.

Honest question: how did Plouffe turn up with cracked ribs? Ouch. This has been a season to forget for him.

Hit by pitch in Chicago.

I'd rather see Jorge Polanco up, and then rotate the DH spot.

Monitor benches Buxton on a 4 game hitting streak with 2 hits and a triple in his last game. WTF? That ought to ...... what.... I don't get it. That makes about as much since as when he brought Taylor Rodgers in to face 4 righties.

Go it, thanks. I could have sworn he played at full speed a day or two ago, though.

I thought he also had a groin injury. Rather than a bang up year, Plouffe is having a banged up year.

He's benched because he's bruised and sore from running into the wall the other day. They are giving him a couple days rest. That makes sense to me.

I have no idea what the plan is? Did I say the P word. Sending Nuck down is idiocy. He knows how to hit AAA pitching. Or maybe he is nursing one of those quiet little ailments the Twins seem to hide on occasion, like its a state secret.

Plouffe to DL:   so Sano can play 3B unblocked. Though there may be an occasional 3B stint for Nunez.

Vargas to Twins:   To showcase him for another team, ergo tradebait. Vargas's future with the Twins--donezo.

CF:   a complicated tug of war between overall belief (need!) for Buxton to succeed, Ryan's philosophy of "scholarships", belief in "AAA experience" and in Rosario, and Molitor's mancrush for D. Santana, and Ryan's propensity to wring every last drop out of a "prospect" (D. Santana). This will take time to play-out. Stay tuned!

Ah. Thanks. Makes sense to me too. I take that back now. Sorry Molitor. You get a pass on this one.

Nuck?

Buxton isn't playing today because he's sore. So I'm back to having no idea who gets sent down or released.

He's got "general soreness." Which probably means he'll go on the 15-day DL with like a major shoulder injury in three days ...
