I struggle to remember a year when the Twins picked up three players at the deadline who contributed at least a little. Most years it seemed they picked up zero players who contributed and some years they picked up players who actually made things worse or brought their own mini-crises with them. In 1987, they got Schatzeder, Baylor, Niekro, and Carlton, and Baylor, and Baylor and Schatzeder contributed in the postseason, but Niekro and Carlton were bad innings-eaters at best.

I think this year's deals were wrong for the organization, but am also glad that they are working instead of not working.

Your name is clever...can you work something up to go with Lavagetto?

I'm very happy with Kody Clemens. He's not a superstar and, at 30, he's not a kid either, but he is a solid fielder in the infield or outfield, he hustles and his head always seems to be in the game, and he can even be clutch at times. He didn't really bloom until he arrived in Minnesota and we are lucky to have him.

The four Clemens brothers are named Kody, Koby, Kory, and Kacy. Any guesses why the names all start with K?

Just when I had given up on the Twins making the play offs they go and sweep one of the best teams in baseball and just after a particularly gutting loss too. This team just does not quit. Bullpen has gone from terrible to quietly one of the best in baseball for the last 6 weeks. Credit to everyone involved there.

Oh and.....

CALL UP WALKER JENKINS!!!!!! He's ready.

Interestingly enough: president Millard Fillmore worked to make imported Peruvian guano cheaper and more accessible for American farmers and his efforts led eventually to the Guano Islands Act of 1856.

I love both Millard Fillmore and guano history (and yes, the history of guano from South America really is fascinating!). Thanks for that. You made my day!

He thought it would be the whole shooting match.

Nice sweep Twins.  Id also like to thank the Atlanta Braves for playing uninspired ball and just seemingly disinterested in playing.  Thanks also for removing Ssle from his scheduled start against the twins so he can face the Brewers.  Thanks Twins for doing a great job taking advantage of thus.  Well done Twins!!

Damn, Dubón was pissed! I couldn't believe he didn't get tossed. Wished they had shown other replays. Looked like the right call but hard to tell from the angle they showed.

What a gutsy gamble by JB on the double.

Heckuva way to have a 5-4 homestand. I'll be thrilled with a 3-3 road trip. At this rate, we are going to have Games That Matter in September, and that's about all this Twins fan could've hoped for, especially when Pablo went down for the season on the first day of Spring Training.

As it currently stands, Shelton has to be a frontrunner for Manager of the Year.

Who has it better than us, huh? ;)

I love the fight in this team, they don't give up.

Bradley needs to give us more than 5 innings if he is going to considered a top of the rotation arm.  He still has too many times where he just loses control.  This has always been his issue and hopefully he can find the solution because when he is on he can be very dominating.

Pretty sure he had 2 quick outs & then walked the #8 & #9 guys………he’s got great stuff! However it’s pretty clear that the Rays were doubtful he’d ever consistently be “sound between his ears”…….needs to mature with more failures & sucesses.

Yes! The trip to Sacramento just worries me for some reason. The worst teams in the league have been pretty decent against us this year.

This is why I wonder if we can count on him for a start in the playoffs.  We need him but which Taj will show up.

Also, I agree with what Morneau said on the broadcast: In what universe was Bell's blast on Tuesday only 434 feet? GTFOH. Was closer to 500 imo.

I just sent this email to the commissioner's office:

Dear, Rob Manfred,

This is a formal request to end the season after today's schedule of games. It is critical that you consider this request and act upon it for a valid reason. It gets cold in Late September and October in Minnesota. We often see temperatures of -50 in early October. Concluding the regular season today, August 20th will allow the Minnesota fans to attend home playoff games in temperatures better suited to outdoor baseball. It will be easier for fans to get through the security gates when they are not wearing heavy winter coats.

Sincerly,

Fun facts:

Kody Clemens and his dad Roger have combined to hit 54 career regular and postseason MLB HRs.

That is correct.

They have also combined for 4,675 Strikeouts on the mound.

I'm tempted to make a joke about making American guano great again, but that seems too easy.

If I remember correctly, the first shipment of guano was stored on the poop deck. The captain was not pleased.;

As far as defense goes, the team is 28th out of 30 according to Defensive Runs Saved (my go-to). They've been in that range for most of the season, but the negative number isn't growing fast at this point. Luke Keaschall isn't great in the OF, but with an offseason to work, he might be okay by next year. Brooks Lee and Royce Lewis have looked decent to better than that at new positions and Culpepper (perhaps later Houston) might solidify their weakest defensive position (-20 DRS) of shortstop.

It's wild that 3 opening day starters are still every day players... in new positions.  And that's not counting Bell or Clemens.

Huge props to Shelton, but given that the Team That Shall Not Be Named is on pace to increase its win title by 25 and potentially win the division, I'm guessing that Mr. Venable is seen as a fronterrunner.
