  1. Thanks to the boys for a good first half...I'm ready for some meaningful games in September!
  2. Nice win! Big game tomorrow to keep the series win-streak intact and build some momentum going into the break. This team is getting better as the weeks pass and with some trading acumen before the deadline they could easily make a run at the ALC crown. Finally, a word of praise for my favorite big man, Josh Bell...a wonderful addition to the team and an absolute inspiration on the base paths. I will never tire of watching that giant motor around first base and belly slide into second for a double...fantastic!
  3. Yeah, I'm not sure what an outfielder has to do to get an error...letting a ground ball single roll between his legs, maybe? Did you catch Caratini's little dance after that inning-ending strikeout? He, for lack of a better word, is an enigmatic character.
  4. He's made some very good catches going back and to the side already. It's been my experience that hard, rising liners hit right at you in center can be a problem...and that one played him like a fiddle. He's a talented athlete and I'm sure he'll improve if they choose to keep him in the outfield. Larnach, on the other hand, may never overcome his difficulty on balls dipping only slightly in front of him, but we do need his bat in the lineup.
  5. TV and get games not available because they are on Apple, YouTube, Peacock or the ridiculous blackouts. If I am paying, I want the season, not an abbreviated season. I prefer a Herb Carneal calling the game and color commentary for filler. Love it Russ! I'll bet that you are over 50!
  6. I'm with you OTHA...it must be an age thing. Younger folks who were constantly plopped in front of a video or computer screens and never had to look out the window of the car on road trips and use their imaginations to pass the time crave razzmatazz beyond the game itself. For me, the game has always been enough and anything, (from in-game dugout interviews to interviewing players in the field during play) that distracts from the game itself is unwelcome. It's just a matter of time before drones will be following players as they run the bases, possibly asking them questions regarding whether they are planning to go for third and if they anticipate sliding. Too far-fetched? I'm not so sure...but fortunately, I'll be long gone. And please, stay off my lawn!
  7. A sad one, and only the Angels' second win in July. The big turning point, in my humble opinion, was Clemens' pop up behind the plate with men on second and third and one out--man, that hurt. He's had a great year, etc. but you absolutely need to drive one in that situation. Unless you roll the dice on a squeeze, I think the best thing to do there is to come up hunting a first pitch fastball and at least swing early in the count rather than letting the pitcher play his little games with you, as they always do. Win the next two and we'll still be in the thick of things after the break...and thanks Twins for an interesting first half of the season.
  8. "El Raton" comes through as baseball proves again why it can be the greatest show on Earth. Keep the pedal down until the All-Star Break and we'll have a very exciting second half. I hate to harsh the buzz of those enjoying the endless banter and too-knowing frivolity in the booth right now, but I'm not a fan. A little is okay, especially for that group of folks who call their friends "dude" but if forced to listen to it on a constant basis I'd have to seek professional help! To each his or her own I guess...
  9. I think if I was younger and called my friends "Dude" I'd have enjoyed the announcer free-for-all much more, but I am what I am. Nice win, by the way--a three-hitter.
  10. The young starter did ok all things considered. Year in and year out the Yanks take good, professional, at bats. That is one of their enduring strengths. They seem to work counts, foul off undesirable pitches, and swing at less junk than most teams. They seldom offer at the kind of pitches that struck Bell out in his second at bat--you know 10 inches or so above the strike zone! It must be very tough for a young pitcher to face that disciplined NY lineup in their own bandbox park. Some credit must go to Paredes...Orze, not so much.
  11. Nice series win. Bell is looking like less of "a mistake" now-eh? The big man put one in orbit in Astros-land! Also. shout out to Keaschall on a great catch in right center...the kid is a talented athlete.
  12. Sad but true, H2O! I do not understand the value of a limited ABS system. I remember a game at Met Stadium in the 1960s (I believe Tom "The Blade" Hall was hurling) and the ump had a real tight zone. The guy in front of me would stand up periodically and pull his glasses off and hold them out toward the ump while shouting "Hey try these pal" and other more graphic expressions. I was a young man and I thought it was really funny. So, I guess the only thing to be lost in going to a completely automated ball and strike system is robing the fans of the joy of hating the umpire--and that is a very rich and ancient baseball tradition! I do not, however, think that is reason enough to keep the human element involved in the calling of balls and strikes. These games mean a lot to people. We have the ability to get every call right and we should avail ourselves of that technology as soon as possible.
  13. I agree completely with "half-full" section, point #4. Lewis is packed with talent and will serve the Twins very well as long as he keeps that positive vibe between his ears. Lewis at first and Keaschall in right might be just what the doctor ordered?
  14. It's tough to play the Dodgers, but the losses still hurt. I'm pretty sure that Lee would have scored the tying run if he had been sent...and I'm convinced that he had to be sent with a ball fielded that deep in the corner and with two outs. He's not fast, but he has young legs and he's not a station-to-station guy like Caratini. It would have taken two perfect throws to get him at the plate, if even then. Send him and we might have won it in extras! Time to reset and string some wins. We are just halfway home.
  15. I really trust Clemens on defense. He's very versatile and even had a nice catch in center the other day...he's a gamer. Keaschall, not so much!
  16. Yeah, you can see Bell's positive interactions in the dugout, etc. He really seems to be a veteran leader, and man is he big: 6' 3" and close to 270, I think!
  17. Clemens is a gamer and a valuable, versatile player who flashed some serious leather in center at a crucial point in Sunday's game. Keep him around.
  18. Correct...my bad! I was at the January 4, 1970 game against Cleveland (W 27-7) but it was obviously the 1969 title.
  19. I like this team...20 hits on Saturday and on Sunday they start out like a typical "phone-it-in-get-away-day" loss (with Buxton waving at junk in the left-handed batter's box his first couple of at bats) only to catch fire later on and take the series. Maybe LA pours cold water on the fire, but man, it's been fun of late.
  20. I haven't seen the chicken meme in a long time...mmmmmmm!
  21. The Vikings were the 1970 NFL champions...that's something-eh?
