  1. I've been watching MLB since 1958 and that was the shortest ump I've ever seen! By the way, she did a great job. She called the close play on Larnach at the plate correctly (a tough call, indeed) and even had the courage to end the game on a pitch that barely scraped the top of the zone, and again she was proven right. "Diamonds are a girl's best friend!"
  2. Random thoughts after a sweet win: Buxton's home run crossed the river and landed in Charlestown. Clemens pulled an 0-5 and short-armed a foul pop on the night his Dad was honored...bummer! Fortunately for Jackson he grounded out to third in his last at bat to avoid the Golden Sombrero. Mickey Gasper looks like someone associated with the Sacco and Vanzetti case. He really does. Martin caught that ball at the furthest point of the Fenway outfield...nice grab, too! Finally, this team may not be great but it's been interesting watching their evolution this season.
  3. If we stay near .500 there should be a chance for a wild card run. Not a contender for a World Series title, of course, but for the playoffs. Maybe the Twins winning 80ish games seems far fetched to you, but it's certainly not impossible, and doing so makes them a "contender" for the playoffs. I'm "sure about that."
  4. NJ, yes, the Twins will stay "in it" at least for a wild card spot if they can hover around .500 for the season, and I certainly think that 85 wins will do the trick. That goal is not impossible for a team that, despite the injuries, seems to be finding some answers as the season progresses including, dare I say it, some hope for the bullpen. Regarding Cleveland: they almost always seem to excel even with injuries and roster losses due to a certain intensity and tenacity, I think. Or maybe it's witchcraft, or the amazing Jose Ramirez (which may be the same thing!) whose superhuman intensity is painted on his face. We took them 2 out of 3 in Cleveland, but they are on a run now and we must stay as close as possible until they cool off a bit, which of course they will.
  5. Yeah, Shelton seems like an old=school baseball guy while Baldelli, although a very talented player, seemed to be on some different psychological plane. I wish Rocco well, but am glad he's moved on to LA.
  6. Hubris? Yeah, I agree...didn't his career tank shortly after he proclaimed: "I don't do slumps?" I'm not happy about his decline and fall, but he can't play in the bigs as he is.
  7. Or: "I am hurt, but I am not slain; I'll lay me down and bleed awhile, and then I'll rise and fight again."
  8. If I recall correctly from my youth, deep in a previous century, the alchemy for such things involves soaking the ball (fully immersed) in a jar of linseed oil, drying it completely in the sun, writing the player's name on the ball in red, indelible ink, and then burying the ball at night 60 feet and 6 inches from the base of an oak tree. Give it a try and time will tell if it works.
  9. Any game played with Caratini instead of Jeffers is prone to offensive failure.
  10. I'm an ossified septuagenarian so, not surprisingly, I resist most of the new stats. I've come around on WAR and OPS, but that's about it. For the most part I believe in the old saying that there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. And I certainly don't care how fast the ball is going as long as it goes over the fence!
  11. I agree about Bell, but man does he look the part of a slugger! Regarding Clemens, he's very good against lefties for the most part, if I'm not mistaken--but righties, not so much. I'd keep him around though. He seems to play hard and is somewhat versatile. Finally, I think that Keaschall will come around and get past his sophomore slump rather quickly. I have great faith in that kid--he burns to succeed.
  12. Under four and more than one, at a ballgame? Man, you deserve a medal. Ever try teaching tennis to young kids? That may be a greater struggle, but not by much. I'm sure that they had a good time, and that's what counts.
  13. Royce has to go now...the Grand Slam Prodigy who "doesn't do slumps" is nowhere to be found. He began the game by striking out with runners on second and third and no outs--just a little contact and it's likely a run. He managed somehow to completely miss a double-play grounder hit right at him that let in the eventual winning run--and in the end he failed to come through again. Enough is enough for this fan. Send him down: if he has sufficient skill and desire he'll come back from a demotion to St. Paul and become a contributing member of the team again, and if not, well then we will be freed once and for all of the enigmatic Mr. Lewis. It is doubtful that management will send him down before the Royce Lewis jersey giveaway day on June 6 (how embarrassing if he's in the minors at the time) but I fervently hope that he's gone by June 7!
  14. This loss is hard to take, especially since I'm stuck here in Milwaukee, but I can't dispute the obstruction call. It probably decided the game and the runner was out before he hit Lewis's foot--but man, what a terrible spot for a professional ballplayer, at any level, to place his foot. Lewis was just asking to have that call made! That and Clemens's boneheaded base running truly hurt the team tonight...in addition to the bullpen, of course. It's a shame to waste another solid start...
  15. Outman raises his average 45 points in one afternoon while Lewis is 0 for 3 and soon may be hitting in the 150's! Time for a demotion or maybe a trade if anyone is interested. I keep waiting for the switch to flip on him, because he was a wunderkind when he first came up...but I'm really losing hope now. I actually think that his problems are largely psychological but I don't know where that leaves us either...hypnotism? I agree that Wallner, at 28, is probably gone forever from the Twins' lineup...sad but true. Yet, we'll always have the memories of those bombs he hit into the plaza in right!
  16. And then there's the Pho King Good Vietnamese restaurant in Auburn, California. Try their Pork Banh Mi if you are ever in town.
  17. Fingers crossed...but the Brewers will be tough and will own the allegiance of half of the crowd at least!
  18. He's having a great year...what an advantage it is to have a catcher who is contributing so much to the offense!
  19. What keeps baseball interesting for so long (nearly 70 years!) is its stunning improbabilities! Ober seemed to be on the rocks earlier in the season and tonight he pulls off an absolute gem and ends up with a complete game victory that was just two hits shy of a perfect game. He may give up 7 earned in 4 innings next time out, but no one can take this away from him! Gotta' love this game.
