Baseball man: there's nothing like baseball to deliver these exciting and preposterous scenarios. I mean, who could have imagined Kiersey, Jr. as the game MVP, a 90 minute rain delay, and a Red Sox pitching implosion in the 9th leading to a Brooks Lee walk off. You've got to love it! Oh, by the way, a shout out to those few fans who rode out the long, long rain delay when the most likely outcome after play resumed was a 13 pitch 1-2-3 inning for Twins' batters.

Great game…I try to get out twice a week. Here’s hoping that you hit another good stretch. -

How are you hitting? -
What an awful game. Although I hated it at the time, I had no idea that the second inning, in-dugout interview of Zebby Matthews, during which the nearly 30 year-old Chris Paddack incessantly bombarded him with sunflower seeds, would mark the high point of the Twins' efforts on the night...but it did!

Twins 1, Nationals 0: The Zebulon Show
knothole61 replied to Peter Labuza's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, Vasquez, to his credit, runs harder than Correa. Carlos is a big drink of water (6' 4") with long legs and strides, but he has lapsed into a permanent 3/4 speed, lope-mode on all "sure out" balls in play. I can't imagine it's laziness because a man of his obvious accomplishments doesn't succeed without pride and perseverance. He has, of course, a number of problems such as plantar fasciitis and a chronically bad right ankle that led to contract voidances, and I'm sure that's why he's become a loper--but yeah, it looks awful.- 41 replies

Tortuga and (many years ago) catcher Earl Battey were quite slow. And, in 2025, is Correa really slower than Vasquez?- 41 replies

Dodgers 4, Twins 3: Checking Out
knothole61 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's that old saying: "It's hard to throw good pitches with your two hands around your throat." Jax has some great pitches in his arsenal and when he's on the sweeper and changeup are magnificent, but he often (not always) chokes under serious pressure. He should have eaten Ruiz for lunch...instead he played it "safe" by mincing around the edges and it cost us dearly. All that Jax really lacks is confidence in the clutch...but that's no small thing.- 86 replies

Dodgers 4, Twins 3: Checking Out
knothole61 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Doc, most on here are taking a "high road" of sorts and pointing to many other things that the Twins failed to do that resulted in defeat, and the fact that "there is no check swing rule in baseball" and therefore (apparently) one cannot condemn the ump for ignoring a rule that isn't a rule, or something like that. Well...I agree with you 100%. However you slice it, that was an egregious no call. If you want to see the worst, and most significant, check swing no call, watch the video of game #7 of the 1960 World Series. Pittsburgh catcher Hal Smith, with a 1-2 count in the last of the 8th, (2 outs, 2 on, Bucs down by 1) gave a full 3/4 swing on a Jim Coates pitch that was called a ball. On he very next pitch he hit a 3-run homer. Without that there's no tie in the 9th and no legendary Mazeroski walk off. I know that the no call was not the only factor in the Twins' loss...I also know that it was wrong.- 86 replies

Twins (Paddack) vs Dodgers (Glasnow): 7/23/25, 3:10pm
knothole61 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Water, however vague the rules may be dejure, having watched baseball for "a vast amount of" years...that's a frickin' strike defacto! I think, either consciously or unconsciously, the fact that the call would have resulted in the end of the game may have had a part to play in the no-call. It's a sad ending, but the Twins played very well against one of MLB's best for the second day in a row. What a strange team and what a strange year... -
Twins (Festa) vs Dodgers (Ohtani): 7/21/25, 9:10pm

The odds are long that the Twins will win any of the 3 games in LA--especially the Ohtain start. The boys had a good deal of moxie late tonight though, and C4 unloaded to dead center and almost tied it. Not exactly a "hang your head" game by any means. And here upon the turret-top the bale-fire glowers red. The wake-lights burn and drip about our hacked, disfigured dead. And many a broken heart is here and many a broken head; But tomorrow, By the living God, we'll try the game again! -John Masefield -

With the meal spinner that caused endless arguments trying to determine what, exactly, it was pointing to? Nice! -
We lost to a pitcher who entered the game with a 3-13 record and something in the neighborhood of a 6.50 ERA; and he had a quality start. WTF? "To whom do lions cast their gentle looks? Not to the beast that would usurp their den. The smallest worm will turn being trodden on, and doves will peck in safeguard of their brood." I am waiting for the Twins to "peck" or even "turn" these days...waiting in vain.
-
"On any given day, any given team"...and that's why only a fool bets on baseball. But, it really is awful to lose to a team with hideous uniforms and a closer with a 5.15 ERA! Did I read that right?

I grew in St. Louis Park very close to Halsey's house. One frigid morning I watched as he came out in just a sports coat to give a neighbor a jump start. Great guy and quite theatrical in his own way. If I'm not mistaken (I may be) his folks were thespians. He could lapse into some magnificent coughing jags at times and Carneal, ever the southern gentleman, would graciously help him through them. The "lighting his coat on fire with a cigar" is an incident worth checking out if you are unaware of it. -
Roster changes to salvage the season, or to re-build
knothole61 replied to VivaBomboRivera!'s topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Van, I dig most of this but I'd keep Coloumbe--left-handed and breathing! Frankly, I'm very Funderburk averse! -
Truth be told, I have criticized Buxton in the past whenever he fell into those prolonged funks of waving at and missing every down and away off-speed pitch. It used to drive me crazy. But I have always considered him to be an exceptional athlete whose presence in the lineup was essential to the Twins. But now...now that he is making better decisions in the box, having an all star season, and expressing his love for Minnesota and his fans, I consider him to be worthy of inclusion in the Minnesota pantheon of sports. Honestly, have you ever seen a more exciting performer in all of local sports than Buxton 2025?

Dealing Ryan? Let’s look back at the Berrios deal.
knothole61 commented on jorgenswest's blog entry in Blog jorgenswest
For the love of god don't trade Ryan...he's a very talented (#2?) pitcher who is making a paltry $3 million a year and will not become a free agent until 2028--do I have that right? He's a gold mine. Extend him now and keep him happy!- 30 comments
