MLB negotiated for all the teams it's doing production for, so it's probably not a complete collapse from what they paid Bally's. But I'm guessing they went from $54 million in 2023 to $44 million in 2024, so around $30 million in local TV this year. If it wasn't a multi-year deal, they might get another haircut next year.

My point is it's not going to continue decreasing at that rate, and will be partially offset by revenue sharing if it does, so they're pretty near their revenue floor at this point.  And they're more likely to maintain their profit margins by cutting costs than by trying to increase their revenue.  Confirmation of this will come this winter with what they do to payroll.  I think every action they've taken recently has been something they would do if they were planning to run a shoestring budget on payroll.  I don't think they're motivated by the risk of further revenue loss to spend more.

I don't think the Twins are at risk of moving, but I wouldn't put any faith in the legal system to be the reason why.

They will remain in Minnesota because it's the best for capital.

They will remain in Minnesota because it's best for the other 29 billionaires. The Twins blackmailed their way into a new stadium only 15 years ago and now there are other teams waiting. They aren't going to let the Twins budge in line and take away Nashville, Montreal or one of the other threat cities the other billionaires are currently using as blackmail.

Falvey isn’t leaving. He’s not being fired. When he became president of the Twins and retained his PBO title he essentially married into the family. Without new owners he’s here to stay indefinitely.

Which means Baldelli and his spreadsheet will stay as well. I didn't care who owned the team and how much money they had to spend wasn't the most important thing. Changing the front office and the managers/couches was.

I've already been transitioning some of my attention to other teams this season but it's hard to let go of my team that I chose in 1961 listening to the magic radio in my bed room.

My buddy and I were just talking yesterday, and neither of us believed the Pohlad's were selling.  In fact, I told him what I believe I said in some form here or elsewhere:  the constant reports of imminent sale were a combination of recycled "news," plants of non-news by Twins, and an urgency to have something by reporters.

I have no faith that Ryan and Pablo will be on the team next year.  Buxton will be the only player on the 26 man roster in 2026 on a multi year deal and it will only be because they can’t trade him.

Expect next season to be the first time in Target Field history that a game gets less than 10,000 in announced attendance.

If 2026 is awful, the good news is that you’ll likely have to wait until 2028 to see Twins baseball again.

I am still trying to process this.  The entire gambit was to get someone else to pay for the debt that the Pohlads incurred in their other businesses.  When others looked at the team and the lack of public support that had accrued by the Pohlad missteps they knew the cost was too great.

This is the same family that was okay with the team being eliminated in the 2001 contraction plan - another money grab that fell through.

So enthusiasm?????

MLBTR isn't typically a news or opinion site as much as it is a rumor roundup, but I do appreciate Steve Adams making it clear how disappointed and screwed Twins fans are with this news.

Disappointed is an understatement. I can’t keep following this team swirl the drain. The next 2-3 years we will be a bottom 5 payroll team losing 90+ games. Falvey staying put with his stupid pitching program. Time to find an NL team to follow instead.

I’ve got an idea. Stop the bulk pitching philosophy immediately 😂

There is zero chance Joe Pohlad has any idea what this sentence means.

Here's what I'm afraid of: now Derek "I Was Just Following Orders" Falvey has complete autonomy to run the baseball ops however he sees fit with no threat to his job as long as he adheres to the budget.  If I'm reading that right, then expect to see some, let's call them avant-garde philosophies as he tries to be the next Billy Beane.

Also, Rocco isn't going anywhere.  His boss has no pressure to win, so why would he be replaced if he's going along with the program?

Meanwhile over in the NBA the Portland Trailblazers had no major problems selling the team...

FOR JUST OVER FOUR BILLION DOLLARS.

And they just put the team up for sale in May. Sheesh! You can't tell me there weren't buyers for this Twins team, it's just that the current owners made the purchase so unattractive from a business standpoint that no one wanted it. I loathe the term "poverty franchise," but this all leaves me with that taste in my mouth.

..... from the 5 people in the stands!

My granddaughter just went to a local AAA game because it was Harry Potter night. I doubt she knew any of the names of the players. I think a lot of people at games, kids and adults, aren't paying a lot of attention.  That's what the owners count on.

Maybe this isn't the end of the situation as Manfred was JUST saying a deal was right around the corner. Are the other owners aware of this new arrangement? Or did he just drop the news to everyone all at once, because based on Joe's track record, there likely was no strategy to any of this. The other owners are going to have to approve the limited partners. and the other owners aren't going to want the Twins to be a perennial revenue recipient team. This market hasn't always and doesn't need to be a revenue sharing recipient, but the other owners have to know it will be if the Pohlad's are still running things. Maybe they'll throw us a Hail Mary and not approve the limited partners.

Honestly, it was BS then and it's BS now.  Manfred might as well be an IPAD on a table rolled around with AI ready to answer questions.

Off topic here except for the mention of the A's move to Las Vegas. In making way for MLB, here is The Tropicana Casino's last hurrah. Pretty spectacular.

I haven't seen anyone else lay this out, but let's look at how it appears the pieces fell:

1) Pohlads lose buckets of money on commercial real estate thanks to Covid.

2) Pohlads continue to try to squeeze the blood out of their only ripe lemon and make stupid broadcasting decisions, right size payrolls, increase ticket prices, etc. to try and offset those losses.

3) Pohlads have just enough business sense (non-zero, but not by much) to see that they've lost the fanbase due to those moves and realize there are limits to how much they can squeeze.

4) Pohlads notice that other major professional teams are selling for huge, juicy price tags.  They see a way out that will help them completely offset other losses.

5) Pohlads start floating the idea out in back channels and find Justin Ishbia very interested.  Conversations start.  Eventually, somewhere along the way, the Twins attach 400+ million in debt to the sale.

6) Ishbia starts wondering why he's paying for the franchise and somebody else's debt.  Gets cozier with the franchise he's already associated with.....backs out.  Media finally gets a hold of those conversations.

7) Pohlads lie they have multiple bidders.  They purposely misconstrue people interested in becoming limited partners as legitimate buyers hoping to fish out another Ishbia.  Nobody rides in on their white horse.

8) Pohlads decide (due to the lack of interest in paying their debts for them by other billionaires) to keep the Twins (who they are clearly making money on), cut payroll to increase the money they are making, and get some quick cash to sell off pieces of the team to address the debt that is the center of this.

9) Pohlad's long term plan is to hope the CBA swings media revenues in their favor and protects their low allocation of funds to the payroll with a cap and a floor.  They'll sell if it doesn't, hold on if it does.

10) They continue to profit.  We continue to suffer.
