Yeah, this really wasn't a winnable one. Sands plus the bullpen was never going to hold the Yankees, even with "good" managing you maybe save 1-2 runs. Injuries are hurting, but the bullpen is also half cooked / AAAA guys and like the Chief said, that's not going to roll if you want to be a contender.

Cotton is Megill is Cano is Minaya. My personal fave is Megill. 

They're the same guy. Fringe major leaguers who, when on, can have a week or a month of decent production.  But they can't be expected to perform regularly across multiple months, and they're the guys good hitters make their living off.

Good teams don't try to build a bullpen from these types.

Tonight wasn’t about intimidation IMO. Not like in games past. This was always going to be an uphill battle when you start a guy you know probably won’t finish 4 innings of get to the 5th. You knew you’d have to use 4-5 shaky relievers and one or more would eventually fail. And that’s what happened.

Also throw in some bad clutch hitting (which is always a staple of twins/Yankees). Looking at you Byron. Not taking advantage of 4 (real) errors.

I don’t care what the organizational philosophy is for archer. IF he can get into the 5th+ tomorrow, he must be allowed to. Must.

We’re fellow Twins fans. I know we’re on the same side. I feel your frustration. I want this bullpen to perform as well. But in no way do I aspire for my team to be like the Yankees. They have every advantage and their victories are hollow for it.

Gary Sanchez had 3 opportunities to strike critical blows too. Could have been so much more, but again, it never looks like a fair and real baseball game in NY.

But yes, they signed Dylan Bundy. Were they planning on 34 starts? Archer? Ober? 

When your PLAN is go cheap, and nobody gets to 150 IP if things go perfectly, I have a hard time having a lot of sympathy.

One big hit away from tying the score or getting the lead. If they did that, the bullpen usage would have been far different. The guys used today aren't proven big leaguers (except the struggling Duffey). The chance of the guys they ran out today all pitching well is extremely low. This is the way that games have been managed for at least 20 years--when you are behind in the game you don't use your best relievers. 

I agree with Chief that the bullpen is extremely thin. I doubt the 'pen can hold a lead with four innings of their best relievers. I think the chances of the guys they used today shutting down the Yankees today were <10%. I'm frustrated with what has happened to the staff. Injuries are part of the game, but a team that is as cautious as the Twins should be rewarded by having decent health as a result of their caution. Instead, there are injuries on top of injuries. Ugh, ish and ick.

To be fair, Had there not been so many injuries and Covid problems in the rotation, archer would probably be in the bullpen right now as the long reliever. Would have been perfect for a night like this.

Oh no.......we'd have to waive Duffey?  How could we ever manage to go on?????  Cotton may be 30 but Duffey wouldn't stick with any club in the majors right now.

 

Arraez will probably go on the IL with a shoulder injury now.....why?  Because it's the Twins.

Like so many games against the Yankees in the past couple decades…we were so close. Just couldn’t get over the hump there in the first. 10 or 12 at-bats go differently (and take away one or two innings) and this things could have been headed to extras where anything can happen.

How much longer can the Yankees luck hold??

I didn't mean to sound flippant, but I'm not at a point to try and carefully support my contention either.  Thus I was terse.  But this roster was constructed in a certain way, and we're seeing the results now.  A roster is constructed bit by bit over the course of multiple seasons, one decision followed by the next, and it seems to me that our analytics department undervalues durability, relative to how other teams do.  We to all intents and purposes replaced iron-man Berrios with injury-prone Gray.  We traded away a key reliever with some potential chronic finger problems, for a starter with even more pronounced problems in the elbow region.  Bit by bit, this roster may not have been purposely built for fragility, but here we are.
