I guess I'm confused. If there's no structural damage, why would he need a week off?

Soft tissue damage might not be termed structural, but not respond to a couple of aspirin overnight either.

There's soft tissue in the knee?

I thought they said it was swollen.

Oh. I didn't see that.

Well, maybe I didn't either, because now I can't find anything online to back up that assertion.

We need Heezy to enlighten us. But my guess is that when they say no structural damage that means no tears or fractures, just inflammation.

Well, Jake Cave hasn’t played for St. Paul for two days. Is he on a flight to Boston?

Please play nice.

As an old school baseball guy, I echo your "Why"? Tony O would never become great, if he sat out for every time his knee "hurt". Soft tissue damage.... sounds like a bruise to me.

There is a wide spectrum of injuries that are less severe than structural damage (a tear or a fracture) but more severe than a bruise. I'm not a medical doctor, however, I do have some training and awareness in medicine and health care. And I'll make an educated guess that Tony Oliva would have had a longer and more productive career with today's medical care than he did with what was available 50-60 years ago.

At this point, I'm not sure whether I actually hate Jake Cave or whether I find performing a bit about hating Jake Cave irresistible.

And ultimately, does it matter?

Jake Cave dived for a humpbacked liner in a game my son and I watched in person at Kauffman, and in doing so basically lost the game for us on the spot.  Our wearing Twins gear made it a bit impossible for the Royals fans near us to resist razzing us.  So yes, I hate Jake Cave with the fire of ten thousand suns colliding to form a black hole into which I pray that he be sucked.  Or, that he stay with St Paul.

There's a lot of space between those two outcomes. You're pretty easy to please.

Fingers crossed ?

Hopefully Buck doesn't cross his fingers.... Probably would strain a ligament.

This is like starting a thread about the fact that the sun came up this morning. Buxton is injury prone. Buxton is injury prone. Buxton is injury prone. The only question is when he plays again, how long before the next one. It is a shame but it is a fact and he should be p....d along with team mates and fans. Unfortunately he will probably sooner rather than later simply have to call it quits. Either that or learn to play hurt (see Mickey Mantle) but that isn't in today's game.

Might Tony Oliva have had a longer career if he only averaged playing 75 games a year like Buxton? Maybe so.

Would he have been a Hall of Famer? Unlikely.

And despite playing hurt much of the time, he still logged a 15-year MLB career, on par with most players today.

So, I saw that Buxton is feeling fine and then Baldelli says they will work out a plan for his return in a day or 2.

If, he is feeling fine, play ball Buxton and suck it up.

I don't think that last part is fair at all.  There is a lot to be said about Byron's injuries, but an unwillingness to be "tough" ain't one of them.

Agreed, 1000x.

Sometimes players feel fine, or say they do, but they aren't fine. There are too many examples to mention of players returning to action before medical problems have resolved, only for a recurrence or exacerbation to occur, making the wait for return to productivity even longer.
