ashbury Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 And looks like we've found the offseason game thread.Concur.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 That review is trying very hard. The lack of developed relationship between father and son is a feature not a bug. And it's fairly artful conceit, given that the story is really about loss. That the audience measures that loss through reflection on their own lives, shouldn't be counted against the film. It wasn't as if the film lacked character development or textured relationships. Field of Dreams is sentimental, magical/realistic, and 1980s rough, so one has to be willing to suspend disbelief more than usual. It's not for everyone. But for what it endeavors to be, I don't think it could be described as awful--maybe it's just not your kind of thing, like campy humor? You implying I have no sentimentality? Or soul? don't believe in magic? .... I find the movie unwatchable, but not all of those types of movies..... But you are mostly right about camppy humor....

I find the movie unwatchable, but not all of those types of movies..... But you are mostly right about camppy humor....Not at all. I'm just saying there's an amount of cheesiness to the premise and the product, that it could seem almost "campy," but in a sappy way. For my part, that film does have an emotional effect on me, and I also think the pacing and the boldness with the magical quality works, even is charming. I thought it was cool that his wife stood up to the Nazi big, and that her family thought they were fools, only for her brother to see what they saw in the end. It's sweet and cheesy. But I think you're missing out if you can't enjoy it.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Apparently, it takes a while for baseball's stove to get hot.I could be wrong, but it feels like things are slower than I can ever remember. Seems like there aren't even any good rumors. Not going to get in to a discussion about players being paid more when younger in their careers vs over-weighted contracts later on. That's a different debate. But I really believe the market shift we saw last year is for real. Sorry, but I don't believe it's collusion. I think, just as their are fundamental shifts in how the game is being played on the field, I believe owners have simply seen diminished returns on FA contracts over the years. (I believe this is also partially due to the growing strength of analytics in the game). There will be action. There will be deals and movement. And there will be some big deals, maybe even a couple that make our jaws drop. But it almost feels like everyone is playing poker and waiting for someone to make a move. Personally, I'd really like to see a young team with a young FO, new manager, a very interesting core in place, and money to spend, jump in early for a guy or two and make a splash, then sick back and pick up a nice piece or two later in the game like last off season.

Had to watch the whole thing, of course! Thought to myself when the ghosts were playing..."ahhhh....baseball!"Go the distance!
glunn Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 field of dreams is a terrible, boring, awful, movie..... https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2017/02/13/field-of-dreams-is-absolutely-terrible/The author has some good points, but I still like the movie despite the huge plot flaws.

Platoon Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Maybe we need to start our own rumors. If we repeat them enough they could become true? Or at a minimum alternative facts. I'll start: Bryce Harper is coming to Minny for 6 years @ 180M. Feel free to mention this anywhere, but leave out the part that I have absolutely no idea what I am talking about.
old nurse Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Be Board no more Red Sox Make First Major Move of the Off-Season most sought after Catcher off the bored The minor league free agent signings have begun. The Twins have already signed a relief pitcher appropriately misspelled as Erasmore Moreno. Alas, as with most of these signing, they are quickly forgotten as there is no excitement about these signings until they are added to the 40 man roster late in August
Han Joelo Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 There was a big signing already--Escobar! While it seems like he sold himself short, a bird in the hand...you know, we assume these guys are all set for life, but when you read his backstory, and then add on what has (and is) happening in Venezuela, it makes sense to me. This could be the best Christmas ever for the Escobar clan! Seriously, though, while it is boring for us, it must be full on anxiety and depression for the guys waiting around. While the big dogs jockey to find out whether they will be able to afford one yacht, or two yachts, the guys on the margins are greeting people at Walmart next Friday morning.

Whenever Corbin flies in, he picks him up and drives him to Minnesota instead! Is that TOO MUCH to ask for?

Taildragger8791 Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Perhaps some of the slowness is the result of MLB teams colluding, errr ummm, I mean "cooperating", to tamp down the free agent market?
Tomj14 Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 If the GMs make all their moves early the owners might see little reason to fund their week of living decadent at the Winter Meetings, which this year I believe is being held in Vegas. My kids do this too. They hold off on doing homework or cleaning their rooms knowing if they get me anxious enough I'll start offering bribes. That is just good parenting
ashbury Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 YesThe panel would also have accepted... well, pretty much anything actually.
Tomj14 Verified Member Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Other sports have rapid fire free agency. Maybe it's fitting that the MLB is a more methodical event. In other sports you pretty much know what you are getting when signing the big names, in baseball not so much?

Whenever Corbin flies in, he picks him up and drives him to Minnesota instead! Is that TOO MUCH to ask for? That sounds like a sequel to Midnight Run. I'm guessing there will be an exciting car chase through Pennsylvania involving Andy McPhail and the Philly Phanatic and then some kind of double cross in Chicago where Theo Epstien kidnaps what appears to be Corbin tied up, gagged and with a bag over his head in the trunk of Falvey's car but when he gets to Wrigley field and removes the bag he finds out it's actually Logan Morrison. The final shot of the movie would have Bryce Harper greeting newly best friends Falvey and Corbin as they get off of a Greyhound outside of Target Field saying "Welcome home!"

The Falvine team obviously identified that tall managers were being undervalued and made the smart play here.
