DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Hopefully that is the LAST we will ever we gibson in a Twins uniform. Goes down as another bust in a long list of Twins first round busts. Berrios time!!!
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 I wonder if the front office is considering switching Duffey's and Gibson's roles on the roster. It's not as if the Twins have any other decent options unless they DL Gibson, which would allow them to recall Mejia.
Joe A. Preusser Verified Member Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 I believe he needs to be sent to AAA, not released. Bring up JO and don't think twice. But Gibson still has too much talent to not give a shot to get right.

Any calls to cut Gibson are emotionally charged and lacking in reason.

Giving innings to terrible pitchers who have no upside is dumb when you are rebuilding.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 BERRIOSDude, Berrios is going to be here shortly. He's going to take the fifth starter spot. Even if you call up Berrios in five days, you still have the same problem in 12-ish days when the Twins need a fifth starter. So it's either Duffey or Mejia.

Have you looked at the Twins MiLB starting depth? I'm fine with demoting Gibson to either the bullpen or Rochester but the Twins need arms, no matter how bad they are. Their depth is nearly non-existent.

I know you have to carry the Twins FO water on a lot of these things, but defending a guy who has never been good and has been one of the worst 5 pitchers in baseball the last 14 months? Come on Brock. Bullpen, I guess I could maybe see it. But him as a starter should be over. Forever. Him succeeding as a reliever? I give it a 1 in 6 chance, which is better than a lot of guys they have in the pen. So maybe you are right on that.

He has some nice pitches, definately has had MLB success in the past. But please get him off the 25 ASAP.

No reason not to try to fix him in AAA.He's 30, he's not going to get better. His success before was years ago and pretty limited anyways. Bullpen or bust. No more starts for this guy, doesn't have the mental make up either.

Get them out of the rotation, sure, but don't throw them away.

And I don't believe guys can't get better after 30, that's silly. 30 is the new 25.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Good thing they still have Dozier and didn't trade him for pitching.
drjim Provisional Member Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Good thing they still have Dozier and didn't trade him for pitching. Truly is a shame they don't have an injured starter at AAA.

markos Provisional Member Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 I'm starting to think that Gibson is cooked. Last year I kind of gave him a pass due to the various injuries. But his velocity just hasn't come back to his 2014-2015 levels, and his pitch movement just isn't the same either.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Yeah... Pretty hard to get down on them for that deal in the short term.It should be fairly obvious I don't care about this year. As you have said, there is no depth at pitcher... But there appear to be enough middle infielders.

But there appear to be enough middle infielders.Unfortunately, that was the case at second base around MLB. Which is why the Twins had one suitor for a 40 homer second baseman under a team-friendly contract. I can't blame the Twins for walking away from that deal, particularly after it became apparent the Dodgers had a second option lined up in Tampa. The Dodgers had all the power in that deal. That's not an optimal situation to try to move a guy coming off a 6 WAR season.

And it's probably not a coincidence that the Dodgers were willing to move De Leon and now it looks like he's headed to Tommy John. Instead of being critical, we should probably be crediting the Twins front office for not executing such a massive blunder.

Any calls to cut Gibson are emotionally charged and lacking in reason. It can be that hard to acquire a replacement level 5 starter from someone's AAA team. I thought Gibson should have been non-tendered last fall. He is simply unable to execute pitches consistently and has been for his last 35-40 starts. That's enough of a sample size for me. Maybe he would be better in the pen. I don't personally believe he would be. And there is absolutely no guarantee his arm would even be able to handle the very different challenge of being a reliever.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2017 Author Posted April 23, 2017 Yeah... Pretty hard to get down on them for that deal in the short term.Which deal? Other reports were out there with a couple solid pieces FYI. Still should have traded anyone and everyone for SP help though.

I saw something, somewhere, that said he actually had two remaining. Edit: I remember. It was mlb trade rumors. They had a list of everyone on the 40 man who was out of options with less than 5 years service time. For the Twins that was Tonkin, Escobar, Adrianza, Grossman, Polanco and Danny Santana.

I'd rather have 4 years of control of Del Leon post TJ surgery than Dozier stinking up Target field at a .242/.306/.364 rate (*) and blocking younger players for 2 years. He needed to and still needs to go. He was and is part of the problem, and hopefully someone is willing to take him off the Twins' hands this season. (*) .200/.273/.200 in high leverage situations, where he has a career .225/.294/.377 slash line, including a .192/.288/.384 line last season.
