Physics Guy Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 ESPN's David Schoenfield posted trades for all 30 teams. He proposed the Twins trading Dozier straight up for Lucas Giolito. This is the type of trade the Twins need if they move Dozier. Giolito made a few starts for the Nats and is a potential #1. The Nats have shown a willingness to spend money on FA so they may be willing to part with their top pitching prospect. I think the Twins should make this trade if the Nats are willing. http://www.espn.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/76381/a-trade-for-every-team
whosafraidofluigirussolo Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 A little hard to imagine the Nats acquiring another second baseman in order to move Murphy to 1st (he's only hit like a 1st baseman for about a year, right?) and bench Zimmerman, but I suppose stranger things have happened. Also, the last time the Twins traded an up-the-middle position player straight-up to the Nationals for a starting pitching prospect, it didn't work out so well. All that said, I wouldn't complain if this deal happened.
Monkeypaws Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 I read this as Dozier for Italian ice cream. Sounds delicious
Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 I read this as Dozier for Italian ice cream. Sounds deliciousI'll take ice cream over faith night every damn time. Every. Damn. Time.

crapforks Provisional Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Yes. The Twins would/should do that in a heartbeat. Why on earth would the Nationals do this? I really hope the league views Dozier like this writer does!
theBOMisthebomb Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 If we can deal Dozier for a #1 starter let's do it.
jimmer Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Where's Daniel Murphy going to go? Doubt they'd move him to 1B even though he's terrible at 2B.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 This trade makes no sense for the Nats. Daniel Murphy is too short to play 1B.

beckmt Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Lots of risk, high reward. I would go for it.
Physics Guy Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 Murphy is an inch taller than Rod Carew was.And 2" taller than Prince Fielder.
BrianTrottier Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 And 2" taller than Prince Fielder. And the same height as Mike Napoli, and two inches taller than Carlos Santana.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 He seems to be within the current established height range.
laloesch Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I'd do that deal in heartbeat. However it makes no sense for the Nats to make such a trade and thus it's not worth discussing really.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 He seems to be within the current established height range. The legendary Eddie Gaedel. 3-foot-7. Put in for one at bat. The pitcher could not find his tiny strike zone, so he had a 4-pitch walk. He was then pulled for a pinch runner. He holds the record for highest career OBP. The AL President voided his contract after 2 days, for breaking the vagely worded "making a mockery of the game" rule. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gaedeed01.shtml
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 If this is legitimate, then this deal is much better than the projected Dodgers trade acquiring De Leon and others. Let's explore this option.

Let's explore this option. I think it's just a writer spitballing. But I like the idea. Especially if Giolito can do what he did in the minors. A rotation that starts with Giolito and Berrios is pretty solid in like two-three years ...
zenser Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I like this more than what the Dodgers could do. I don't mind what the Dodgers could offer, just more of a fan of Giolito. I would do this in a heartbeat.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I like the deal, which probably means it's too good to be true. Quite a few of the team proposals seem a bit off balance so I'm not sure where this writer's fairness gauge truly lies. At least it's not Jim Bowden. He's done this stuff before and his always sound unbelievably off.
Baseball Bat Provisional Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I saw this on ESPN.com too. I was shocked when I saw this. Giolito is a top 5 prospect in all of baseball. I do this deal in a heartbeat. I don't know why the Nats would do it, but the Twins definitely should. What also is interesting from ESPN was an article posted yesterday by Jim Bowden that looks at all the potential trade chips in baseball and lists the teams potential destinations. Dozier was on that list, and the Dodgers, Braves, Angels, and A's were listed as potential destinations, and Bowden gives Dozier a 45% chance of being traded. The Twins were also listed as potential destinations for Sonny Gray and Jake Odorizzi. I have no idea if the A's are interested, but some sort of swap involving Sonny Gray and Dozier could be interesting. The Twins could also likely get more than Gray from the A's as he is coming off a pretty bad year.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 If I were the Nationals and I wanted to improve the offense, I'd move Trea Turner back to short, and either slide Espinosa over to second and Murphy to first, and then sign Dexter Fowler or bring back Ian Desmond. I would not really even think about trading Giolito.

I really hope the league views Dozier like this writer does!I can't imagine that they do not. If the Dozier did not play for the Twins then Twins fans would be salivating over him. Dozier had 17 more homers than Murphy. 27 more than Zimmerman. Because of the poor 2nd half last year and the horrible start this year it looked like Dozier was "figured out". His 2nd half laid waste to that idea. If we cannot get something this good or similar then we should not be trading him.
Blake Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 According to Baseball Reference, from 2015 through 2016, Brian Dozier has 3 walk-off home runs, 13 tying home runs and 24 go-ahead home runs among his 70 home run total. (I pieced this together, maybe someone has better information) That seems like a special bat and perhaps a #1 starter is undervaluing Mr. Dozier just a bit. Remember, a #1 starter pitches every 5th day, but the #2 and #3 starter may need the bat provided by Mr. Dozier. (I realize there are some problems with the totals, because some home-runs are probably double counted. For instance, a walk-off home run may also be counted as a go-ahead home-run.)

RHPI ran across this: the last three years, Dozier has averaged 4.7 WAR. According to Baseball reference, +5 WAR is all-star caliber. (I choose the last 3 years because this is when I think Brian started to really figure things out) I'm torn on Brian Dozier. One part of me worries that Mr. Dozier is being undervalued and the other worries that Brian is getting close to his "sell by" date. Glad I'm not the GM making these kinds of decisions.

He is good but he has limitations. He shows a lot of power when betting first and when the bases are empty. His pull hitting would not bother anyone, and his power being mostly against righties would be only a minor concern. The problem is you want high OBP guys hitting leadoff and hitting when the bases are empty, not the home run guy. Because of this he may not be going anywhere, it would depend on whether or not another team would think they could fix it. No one is going to move Dozier to leadoff just because that's the only place he can hit, other teams have their own leadoff guys already. Dozier would have to adjust, and when the Twins have tried to move him down in the order his bat went ice cold.

Dozier's second most used place in the order was cleanup- where he had higher AVG, OBP, and SLG than he did at leadoff.
