Stuff That's Getting Old

Teflon

1. The adjective "electric" as applied to pitcher's stuff. Hack announcers have now claimed so many pitchers to have "electric" stuff that bullpens need to be grounded and catchers mitts need to be UL tested.

2. Feigning indifference in dugouts after noteworthy hits. It was cute and funny the first time. Not so much the 600th time. Ditto the obligatory towel of shaving cream in the face during post-game interviews.

3. Managers and coaches still wearing uniforms. Most of them just pull smocks on over their uniforms anyway to cover up their beer guts. Gardy and Scioscia should have been allowed to wear bowling shirts if they wanted. Teams would then also have more prime numbers to give out to prospects improving their self-esteem.

Please feel free to add your own list of stuff that's getting old.

You hit on my peeve about shaving cream, and nothing else is presently coming to mind. Maybe later on I'll think of a gear being ground.

The tossing of sunflower seeds at players during TV interviews. Pretty moronic.  Watch the game, not the interview.  You are professionals.

God Bless America for the 7th inning strech - that's "take me out to the ball game."

I understand the emergence of it in NYC after 9/11, but seriously, isn't the Star Spangled Banner enough?

Star Spangled Banner

God Bless America

Both should stop. Also, the Replay system and the length of time it takes to get it "right" or "wrong" is ridiciulous, you don't need all 4 umps huddling up like it's a freaking 3rd and 10. Have them signal down within 20 seconds whether the call was right or wrong. It's 2015. Not the JFK assissination where we only have the Zapruder film to work with. NFL is 1,000,000x Worse, but at least they have the commercials excuse to use. Also, pitching coaches trips to the mound is getting old, let them "signal" or "yell" into the catcher and let him handle it.

The silent treatment, shaving cream, and sunflower seeds are all in good fun. Not sure how that can bother anyone to be honest.

The sunflower seeds were annoying tonight during Santana's interview.  A couple handfuls?  fine, no problem.   Constant pelting with a guy trying to do an interview in his 2nd language just made it stilted and awkward.

Brand of baseball.

Downward plane.

Major league level.

Bert Blyleven.

Outer half, inner half, dropped the bat-head on the ball, hit the other way, my California math

Tommy Lasorda should have worn a tent.

Watching adults act like adolescents is not very entertaining. If I want to watch that, I can go to a saloon, a party or Fort Lauderdale.

Funny, I was gonna say the same bolded statement about the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America.

Heh...  I remember a game a while back where Danny Valencia was the hero, and got a shave cream pie on camera--  He pssd and moaned like a bee-otch about it the rest of the interview.  Team-mates!

Oh, my...  I just can't unsee that in my mind's wicked eye...

Star-Spangled Banner ... done poorly and sung incorrectly. And, honestly ... I think it could be done once at the beginning of each series. More and more I see people not really 'bothering' with it, which is a shame. But I wonder if done once at the beginning of each series, and done well and properly, it would be attended to as it should be ... and not become so routine and 'old.'

No more 'God Bless America' except for special occasions.

Stupid on-field or on-top-of-the-dugouts 'games' or 'races' between innings, for our entertainment.

THE WAVE!!! But I think the wave was old when it was new.

Adding:

"Drop that change up on the other half of the plate"

"If you come in, you have to go hard in"

I think the announcers just need to mix it up. Many people tune in 100+ times a year.  I actually think they must get some feedback because a few years ago every time a hitter goes the other way Bert used to say:

"Good piece of hitting there. He didn't try to do too much, he took that ball the other way"

Now he never says that

I don't really hate any of the entertainment stuff....but I fail to see how the silent treatment is fun, funny, entertaining.....no idea.

Not a fan of the Star Spangled Banner or 7th inning nationalistic songs either, as sports become more and more international, it seems even more silly. I find the music divisive, personally. But again, I don't know if I CARE or not.

I mostly don't listen to announcers anymore, since they are generally boring.

The Dazzle Man used to say "middle half in" a lot. Seems like he's cooled off on that one. I always wondered where exactly "middle half in" was located in a strike zone. First, "middle half" is what? Does half of the middle half overlap with the outer half? If so, why not just call it middle in? And is it a horizontal comment or does it also include a vertical half?

Now my brain hurts.

The real solution is to Connie Mack this and have coaches dress in suits. It would be awesome. And same thing for the NFL. Belichek looks like a street youth, it would be great to force him to wear a suit.

These aren't things that are old for me, but tangents from comments.

1. a few years ago my wife and I came up with a FSNorth drinking game. We took a drink every time Bert said one of his cliches (at the major league level, CA HS math, SHE-cago, You are hereby circled, downward plane, etc). It can get bad fast.

2. managers wearing uniforms-heres an interesting article about that: http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/style-points/201507/why-baseball-managers-wear-uniforms-lasorda-showalter-mlb

So to get to things that are old for me: God bless America, losing seasons (not this year!), Roy Smalley taking 3 innings to get to his point, and probably more, but I cant think of them.
