Twins prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez was activated from the injured list earlier this week and returned to the St. Paul Saints roster after missing more than three months with a thumb injury that required surgery. With less than two months remaining in the season, Rodriguez will look to hit the ground running and make up for lost time. The clock is ticking on his last year in the minors and unfortunately, the Twins have been able to learn very little about the 23-year-old's readiness.

Patience is a central aspect of Rodriguez's game. His ability to take pitches and draw walks is almost unparalleled in the professional ranks. It's why has a .425 career on-base percentage in the minors, and a big part of why he's been viewed as one of the better prospects in the game — top 100 entering this year according to Baseball Prospectus (#48), Baseball America (#57) and MLB Pipeline (#74). Twins Daily had him ranked #3 in the Minnesota system, noting that he sported "one of the weirdest, most fascinating offensive profiles in baseball."

During his time on the field in 2026, Rodriguez has put that profile on full display, slashing .270/.432/.487 in 34 games spent mostly with the Saints. But the outfielder also missed three months after undergoing surgery for a torn thumb ligament suffered while sliding into first base. It's far from the first time he's dealt with thumb issues in an injury-riddled career, and this latest instance bears extra weight at a time where the Twins really needed to see what they have in Rodriguez.

When it comes to their ultra-patient outfield prospect, patience is no longer a luxury the Twins can afford on their end.

That's because, as Aaron Gleeman recently covered on his website, Rodriguez will be out of options next spring, meaning the Twins will need to either carry him on the major-league roster or expose him to waivers and lose him. Sometimes in cases like this an extra option year is granted due to time lost on the IL, but Gleeman reports, "a league source with knowledge of the formula used to determine eligibility tells me he wouldn't qualify unless the rules change as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement."

If that remains true, then the Twin will find themselves in a difficult spot, essentially forced to carry Rodriguez on the active roster out of camp if he's healthy. And if he's on the roster, he's going to need to be starting regularly, in an already-crowded outfield mix that includes Byron Buxton, Trevor Larnach (?), Luke Keaschall, Alan Roden, Austin Martin and soon enough, Walker Jenkins

The implications extend well beyond Rodriguez himself. Knowing they'll have little flexibility with him next spring, should the Twins be more motivated to trade Rodriguez this offseason? Or does his situation make it more important to move another outfielder and clear a runway for him? More immediately, should they accelerate his arrival this season, giving him at least a taste of the majors rather than asking him to break camp next year as an untested rookie with no safety net?

That last consideration feels especially relevant given Rodriguez's unusual and volatile offensive profile. The huge power and elite patience give him tremendous upside, but the swing-and-miss could also make for a steep adjustment against major-league pitching. There's a plausible version of his future where Rodriguez becomes a middle-of-the-order force, but getting there might require some ugly stretches along the way.

We've arrived at just what makes the lack of options so uncomfortable. What happens if the Twins enter next season expecting to contend and Rodriguez is batting .150 at the end of April? They can't simply send him to St. Paul to work through it. They'd either need to keep absorbing the growing pains or risk losing a talented 23-year-old for nothing.

Maybe Rodriguez will make the whole issue moot by hitting his way into the Twins' plans over these final weeks, and leaving little doubt next spring. But after years of patiently waiting for his development to unfold, Minnesota is approaching a point where his roster status could start making decisions for them. The Twins need to use the time they have left this year — and the offseason that follows — to make sure they're not caught without a plan when that clock finally runs out.

Query:  assuming the lockout, does ERod have to be on the roster before the lockout begins, or, can he continue to play in St.Paul until the lockout ends and then be placed on the roster?  If the Twins can wait to promote him until the lockout ends, that’s probably the answer.

There is no way in he@# that the Twins just let him walk out the door for nothing (his off season trade value is minimal) without ever seeing him in the bigs. That would be beyond idiotic.  But, then again, they got zippo for Jeffers and will get close to zippo for Ryan and Lopez - so I guess it’s possible they could be that dumb.

There has been a lot of talk about Jenkins on this website and I get it but there is a chronological pecking order that needs a certain adherence to avoid spillage.

Yes... we need to produce young superstars like Jenkins is supposed to eventually be. We also need to produce average young talent like we hope Roden can become. And we need to produce young talent in between average and superstar like Erod is suppose to become.

Erod's clock is ticking, the buzzer goes off at age 24, if he isn't ready, when he is thrown to the wolves next year.

Jenkins leapfrogging Erod could cost us Erod.

To me, Jenkins looks more like the guy who’s going to be able to make a difference now and in the future. While Rodriguez is intriguing, he’s also a bit of a china doll, hurt too often. I want to see the best team the Twins can put on the field now, and hope we can see them battle their way into the playoffs with some consistent, exciting baseball. With 2027 potentially a lost season as they wrangle over the CBA, we may not get that chance again until 2028.

Are you really worried about carrying an OF hitting .160 next April? Can he play defense as well as James Outman? I think you know where this is going..

The Twins missed their opportunity with ERod last spring when both he and Roden were outplaying Outman in spring training.  He probably should have come north with the team.  But this is obsessed with playing the fringe guys and giving them a chance.  Now it has caught up with them in that they don't what they have in ERod.

I think there may be still be a place for him but not at the expense of Jenkins.  Roden needs to be considered organizational filler and should be sent to AAA today.

I don't see the issue.   Larnach becomes the DH.

Buxton, Rodriguez and Jenkins is the outfield.    Martin is the bench outfielder.   Roden is optioned to AAA.

I was thinking the same thing. Stop referring to Keaschall as an OF, Roden is proving daily that he can't play 150 games/year, and Martin can be moved whenever.

It's crazy that this team is 3 games under .500 and there are about 12 guys on the roster that can be moved.

They need to find him a spot on a team that is not trying to win in 2027. This is exactly why I thought he was a good player to trade to the Angels for Neto.

This is one of the challenges associated with international signees. Rodriquez has been in the Twins system since July of 2019. The best option is to call him up to give him an opportunity.  The Twins have given more 40 plate appearances each to 3 outfielders with negative WAR. (Outman, Roden and Wallner).

Keaschall's home is 2nd base and I think that will become clear this offseason.

Jenkins - Buxton - Rodriguez  outfield

Lee - Culpepper - Keaschall-  Lewis    Infield

Caratini - Jackson    Catchers

Clemens, Martin, Kreidler   as bench players.   That is a very strong bench,  defense running ability hitting ability.

You must know something that the Twins organization does not know. Is Keaschall getting an arm transplant?

For a team that SUPPOSEDLY WANTS to make the playoffs their lineups sure aren't evidence of that.  Why is Roden still on the team, why?  Call up ERod now and see what he can do.  It's not like Roden is providing any offense.

ERod and Jenkins haven't knocked down the door to play for the Twins and both missed long stretches with injuries (Rodriguez the much longer stretch). I don't see either getting recalled this season unless there is an injury and if that occurs after the Twins are eliminated, it would Rodriguez in order to keep Jenkins off the 40-man roster, especially with the likelyhood of a lockout next spring.

If Buxton returns as anticipated, there really isn't any place for those guys to play this year, as much as people are calling for it. Neither is a backup catcher or infielder where the soft spots in the lineup are currently playing.

EmRod is already on the roster (40) that includes players who would be locked out, if that were to occur.

Thank you for clearing that up.  The choice is obvious then if they don’t want to lose him for nothing.

You can rotate four outfielders and Jenkins can still get plenty at bats.  Especially with Larnach cooling off.  Roden should not be on the roster or should Jackson.  I think Jenkins has been making his case the past month and to not call him this year is being too conservative.  ERod should probably be the extra position player in September.  This allows Kreidler and Clemens to stay on the dirt where they are more effective.

Emmanuel Rodriguez played his first game in AAA yesterday after returning from the 60 day injured list. It was the minor league Field of Dreams game, which is a career highlight for most of these players. Rodriguez went 0 for 3 with a walk. I guess that walk means he’s 100% ready for a major league promotion and the Twins are idiots to not promote him today.

ERod will make the roster next year out of need, even if they feel he is not ready.  They will not let him go on waivers, as someone will take him. He will have to earn his playing time.  They could look to trade him or one of our many left handed hitting outfielders for something.  He has the most value as he is young and still a top prospect, but he is losing value.

Jenkins will be CF most likely next year, Buck will be RF.  That leaves LF for a whole lot of guys to fight over.

I think this may be a blessing in disguise. We tend to keep these dudes down too long and often (imo which is backed up by a few accounts of minor leaguers i've talked to) when we keep them down "too long" the player stagnates/gets disgruntled. The guy will either be ready or not, and it sux that it will take us until he's 24 to put him in that situation where he can figure it out to see if he belongs.

For the season and particularly since the All-Star break, Josh Bell, Luke Keaschall and Royce Lewis should be in the lineup every day. Larnach has been strictly platooned and despite slowing down a bit since the All-Star break, is having a career year. The same could be said for Clemens, although he is currently in a deep slump. I'm sure that the Twins will go with a healthy Buxton before trying to get a spark from a highly touted minor leaguer.

To those saying Jenkins is not knocking on the door -  yes he is.

What were Roden's numbers at AAA? How about Matt Wallner, Kyler Fedko or Aaron Sabato? If he put up .838 OPS for more than a week for the Twins it would be impressive, but not in St. Paul I'll grant a a deeper look at Jenkins' numbers seem to indicate that he might be able to better handle big league pitching than the guys I listed, but there's nothing that shows he can make this club considerably better or that he or Rodriguez would merit playing time over Larnach or Keaschall.

IMHO, the key to getting the Twins offense back in gear wears #25. I am not optimistic that he will hit like he did in the first half of the season and that he'll be healthy for the last seven weeks.

I don't think he is an outfielder either.  We have ample outfielders coming through the system as well.  As to defense I would continue to work on it.  He is a man out of position - so he is going to have to work on 1 of the positions.

LF Might be.. Gabby, E Rod, Larnach. Hope it's.. Austin Martin.

No one can say what the transition would be - we have seen it fail us too often.  But if the national and local evaluations are of any value and his performance this month mean anything he needs to be given a shot at MLB.  If AAA has no meaning then we need to figure out a new minor league system.

Max Clark not starts for the Tigers he was one of the top six draftees.  He was at 293 in AAA.  If the press clippings are of any value and the prospect rankings mean anything we need to call Jenkins up.

Roster construction has been a huge weak spot for years and continues this year. I get that if they call up Jenkins he has to play in 36 or more of the final 41, but Erod really only needs to play in 20-25 to get his feet wet and see what he has before handing him a spot next year, or trading him away because they are worried about losing their backup catcher next year or getting Roden at bats? I have seen enough of Martin and Roden to say there only role on the Twins going forward should be the 12th or 13th player on the active roster at best.
