I'm kind of a tempered guy and a large reason for that is baseball. I've learned that hot starts don't mean great and awful starts don't mean bad. I've learned that peaks can be seen, valleys can be reached, but rarely does a person actually do either.

 

This is still an 85 win team but with their start, they could now be a 90 win team.

 

That's a good thing. Let's just be happy about that because it makes the inevitable disappointment of a five game losing streak more bearable.

 

This is not a championship team... yet.

 

But watching it all unfold will still be a load of fun.

Well said. I do think we have good reasons to be hopeful. Sano went 4-4 today in Ft. Myers. If he comes back and hits above .270, combined with FO making good choices surrounding our pitching, I think we win the division.

Right now Fangraphs has the Twins projected to win 91 games and Cleveland at 93.  I'm thinking that Cleveland win total will start to decrease soon depending on how long Kluber is out.

You sound like Tom Kelly, Mr. "Even Keel". You'd be a great manager! :)

 

While I agree that hot starts don't mean great....I also know that April games count. How many times have we lamented a poor April when the Twins are 4 games back in August? And when this team does hit an inevitable skid and loses 5 games in a row in June, they'll have a cushion thanks to this hot start.

 

It does mean something. Yes, it's way to early to crown the Twins Central Division Champs. But they are doing everything right so far (aside from that darn Blue Jays series).

So what do you think? Which team on this list surprises you the most? Which do you think can (or can't) sustain it?

 

As an optimistic homer I felt the Twins could surprise, so I have to say the DBacks are the most surprising given their off season. Sustainable goes to the Twins. Much of winning, in baseball and life, is mental which can help achieve potential. While there are still some flaws, I believe the Twins are in it for the long haul in 2019 and beyond. IMHO.

I predicted low 90s personally... so I guess I'm not sure about it being an 85 win team. But your point is quite valid. 

 

This is definitely getting exciting. If they keep it up through May...

 

Now with that said, can the FO please go out and get some relief help. The offense looks like it will be everything that was promised and the SP is starting to look pretty good too.

.270 is practically a batting champ in the launch angle era. I'd be happy with .240-250 (and really happy with .270).

Yup! The Yankees are essentially a AAA club right now and when they play other teams that are also rebuilding or just not doing well, (Orioles, Boston, etc) they are playing teams that are at or near their skill level. I think we have a chance to sweep depending on how well Pineda does on Sunday. That being said, a fully healthy Yankees team is probably the best team in baseball and would more than likely have the best record at the moment. But...thats not how it goes!

Small sample size, unfortunately.

 

Look at the Mariners, an 18-15 team that is 0-10 v. teams that are .500 or better. Wow.

Out of curiosity, I went back on MLB reference and looked up the results of every team since 2000 who had a record as good or better than the current Twins record to see how often they make the postseason, make the World Series, and win the World Series.  Since 2000, there have been 43 instances of teams with as good or better records as the current Twins (.655 win percentage).  Sixty percent of those teams would make the playoffs, twenty-one percent play in the World Series, and sixteen percent win the the World Series.  Seven of the past nineteen World Series have been won by a team that was this good in April.  While having a good April certainly doesn't hurt, it is by no means a given that this year's Twins are a postseason team.

 

Odd tidbit of information: The best team by win percentage to not make the postseason since 2000?  The 2001 Minnesota Twins who were 19-7 to start the month of May.

Yup. It doesn't appear that Fangraphs has altered their Cleveland projection yet since that news -- they still have Kluber projected to pitch another 160 innings this year:

Of course, the Rays have played another 5 games against the defending champ Red Sox. While they are struggling so far, I don't know if it's quite fair to lump Boston in with all the other sub-.500 teams!

I doubt it. It's well known Fangraphs hates the Twins.

The Rays are pretty surprising. The AL East is (or was touted to be) an extremely tough division, and I'd heard the Rays weren't even trying this year.

I think those 160 innings are projected to come in one epic late September game where Jose Berrios comes out with the win after Miguel Sano launches a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 160th inning off of Kluber to wrap up the AL Central for the Twins

Quite the accomplishment for the team. I will continue to ask, no, BEG for Falvine to supplement this team this year. Minnesota sports fans are starving for a good team to care about...

Beat the teams you are supposed to beat and play even with the rest.  That seems like a recipe for a postseason appearance.

I respectfully submit that this is a 19 win team.  At the end of the year, they will be a team that just won, on the field, however many games it is that they just won over the course of a long and winding season.

 

I prefer rich adjectives to describe the type of team we have, whether it be malodorous or magnificent, or simply mediocre.

None of these teams surprise me at all.

 

The only teams that I believe have no chance at all are: Giants, Marlins, Angels, Royals, Tigers and Orioles.

 

Everybody else at least has something that can be built upon to produce wins and be competitive.
