But Vargas got to benefit from an additional week or more of that sweet, sweet major league per diem and insurance and whatever other perks come with being on 40-man.

Unless a team runs perpetually under the 40-man limit, Vargas's potential financial loss is merely some other player's gain. It's not much of an argument in favor of the present system.

They don't really need both Granite and Grossman. While Vargas obviously won't get many starts he could prove useful as Jason Castro's personal 8th inning PH.

tbh - I prefer Grossman over Kennys though so his only value is if there is an injury or if he can sneak through waivers.

It's nice to have a bench bat. Is Vargas the second coming of Jim Thome? Doubtful. Still interested to see how the Granite/Grossman/LaMarre thing works out in the next couple of days.

 

We realize the Twins still have 25 pitchers and 15 batters on their 40-man.

I know a former team mate of Vargas who said he was the nicest guy he had met along the way. But Kennys has no value to the Twins except as a minor league call-up in an injury situation. (Maybe)

Unfortunately, he can't go to Japan on his own yet (at least not to play baseball ). He'd have to hope that whatever team ends up with him is willing to sell his rights over there (although I wonder if it's getting too late to do that for 2018 anyway? Japanese rosters and budgets must be set by now too?).

 

If Vargas isn't added back to a 40-man roster by October, he can become a free agent next winter.

The unwillingness for teams to field a pitching staff of less than a dozen really screws over guys like Vargas, who 20 years ago would be a nice switch hitting option off the bench for a lot of teams.

It's following the crowd. There is no rational reason to have 13 pitchers on any roster. It's not like the 13th guy contributes in a positive manner. The way teams manipulate the DL and every transaction should negate this perceived necessity anyway.

 

You really handcuff yourself when you can't make any bench moves due to a lack of options.

The Twins have been trying to talk Vargas into playing overseas for multiple seasons now, and he has refused. So there feels like some "twist the knife" in all of this. But I'm not feeling bad for Vargas personally as he's made it to the show and had a nice little run. 

 

Could the Twins use Vargas off the bench more than that 14th reliever at the back of the pen??  um, yes

 

, certainly for the first few weeks or so, when there's so many days off they supposedly don't even need that fifth starter. But I can also see the value if the are able to slip him through waiver to AAA. Just my .02¢

I’m not sure that I agree that Kennys is getting screwed here. Has it made for a hectic week? Yes. But we’ve all had hectic weeks at work and we all manage to survive.

I did that when I was 22. I went to another country to put my economics degree from UNC to good use. I joined the army.
