I wonder if they could combine a Santana trade with taking a salary dump ( such as McCarthy) from the Dodgers to replace some of the innings and increase the return all around, all while not bumping payroll.

Not sure Dodgers want Santana.  They have a ton of pitching already.  I think other teams - Toronto - might be a better fit.  But Santana should be a realistic fit for most teams.  He's not great but I think many teams would rather have his two year deal than have to trust Nova on a four year deal, for instance.

I'm not thinking Santana to Dodgers. Separate deals.

But there was talk about Dodgers potentially improving the prospect haul if the Twins took on a contract. Moving Santana could make that more doable.

If the Twins are given a good return, by all means move Santana.  The difference between 68 and 75 victories is not an issue of matter to me.  The club going forward into 2018 and the talent level are the issue.  You cannot raise the long term talent level without selling assets.

well, if the Twins picked up De Leon, I'd have to think that someone would get moved from the rotation.  Potentially more so if Stewart were included. I'd personally dump Santiago first, though the return would be non-existent.  If I could get a couple B level prospects for ESan, I'd have to think about it.

Guessing the Twins get DeLeon and Stewart from the Dodgers and then can flip Santana for some other pieces, like an outfielder. But that's just my guess. It's certainly what I'd do ...

My preference would be a C or SS.  Between Buxton, Kepler, Rosario, Arcia, and Palka, they have plenty of options for that 3rd spot.  If they fail, use FA. It's not hard to find a decent OF in FA.

I seriously doubt the Dodgers will part with De Leon AND Stewart. I'm sure the Twins will want two near-MLB ready starting pitchers for Dozier, and De Leon and Stewart would fit the bill. I am just not sure the Dodgers will want to part with both of these starting pitchers.

Moving Santana and Dozier in the same deal doesn't sound like the way to get the best return, but maybe I'm wrong. The Dodgers did something similar last year getting Reddick and Hill at the same time.

Twins to get: De Leon, Bellinger, Stewart, Ross Stripling, Dalton Pompey and Sean Reid Foley

Dodgers to get: Dozier, Danny Barnes, TJ Zeuch and Vlad Guerrero Jr.

Blue Jays to get: Santana, Eddie Rosario and Puig

I wasted a lot of time working on this don't tell me how terrible it is!

You're underselling Dozier. Even if he regresses from his career year, he's still a very valuable commodity and fills a glaring need for the Dodgers.

Sounds super complicated. But it'd be a blockbuster to end all blockbusters.

Duh it was complicated, if you notice the time between my two posts it took me nearly a half hour to work out the details! I would expect the dunderheads running the three organizations to take twice that amount of time to figure out that this is the best deal possible for everybody! Or at least best possible for the Twins.

Hot take alert: move Ervin to Texas with whatever else it'll take for Jurickson Profar.

Um, no thanks.

Weren't the rumors that the Nationals tried to get Profar and had to settle for Eaton as the Rangers were extremely over-valuing Profar?

never, ever, heard that.

Doesn't really add up. They want to start Trea Turner at short.

This is really interesting. It might be a little too good for the Twins and light for Jays, but pretty darn good for all. Are they sending money to Toronto?

You know, I could almost go for this. And it almost makes tons of sense. But my problem is I'm not really sure what you are getting in Profar at this point. I get it, trading Santana for a couple quality prospects doesn't guarantee you anything either! But doesn't it feel like Profar might be more of a lottery ticket at this point???

He started out hot and faded down the stretch. Seems to me it might be difficult for him to keep up with rigors of playing everyday. I think it'll be easier this year.

I certainly would not mind something like that. But I'm guessing a lot of people on this board would not.
