2016 Twins All-Star?

I would like to ask who will be the Twins lone All-Star representative this year? I was asked by a friend and could not come up with a solid answer so I am here looking for a little help.

If Park doesn't win the popular vote at DH, it'd almost have to be Abad.

The only caveat to that would be if Sano goes on a tear. Then I could see them nudging him in to play into MLB's youth movement.

Check that ... it's be the immortal Robbie Grossman. Soon he'll be batting cleanup and I truly believe that .444 BA is sustainable. He was, after all, Baseball Prospectus' #76 prospect of 2012. They don't just hand those ratings out to anyone.

Bless your heart.

Well, we know NO ONE will be voted in. With his contract, Joe Mauer should be a shoo-in for regular appearances (wait, he's not a catcher anymore).

It would be weird if Abad was chosen as the only rep for the team. But that may be the only answer. Yes, Park would be wonderful, but he needs to punch it up a bit more.

Sadly, if he was a third base and playing like last season, Sano would be making the first of many appearances.

I'll cry if Suzuki is chosen as a back-up catcher!

I'm going to the home run derby and all-star game this year, which makes this thread even more depressing. Park is the only real answer to the Twins nominee who deserves it at this point. Of course that means since he is a DH he will get one at bat and be done in the game.

Hopefully he can crush a few more bombs in the next few weeks and get a spot in the home run derby, that would at least be fun to witness.

Park won't get voted in because Ortiz is going to crush the fan vote for DH in the AL, and deservedly so. No other Twins position players deserve a vote. So it's going to come down to the manager selection and there still won't be a position player in the top 15 of their position. Starting pitching isn't even in the conversation unless Duffey or Santana goes on a total tear for the next month (not holding my breath). So by default it'll probably be Abad unless he falls off a cliff, which would have been pants-on-head-crazy talk a couple months ago. If he collapses then I could see Mauer getting it based on career accomplishment. Nunez is falling off fast and his numbers may look pretty pedestrian in another month. Honestly, it's pretty disappointing that Sano, Mauer, or someone can't rise above this pretty low-achieving crowd.

The real question is are we going to have to suffer through endless promotion of who we should vote online for? Please give us a break just one terrible year.

If Park doesn't win the popular vote at DH,

I know of a certain former Twin who is retiring who got that popular vote at DH in the bag.  And it is a big bag.

My argument for why Eduardo Nunez is deserving for this year's game is last year's selection of Brock Holt, who was hitting .292 with a .791 OPS and 2 HR at the break last year. And he wasn't even the Red Sox only selection.

On a related note, why does positional versatility matter at all in a one game all star game?

This is why 1 All Star per team is so stupid.  I for one, would sure as hell rather watch Correa, Boegarts, Lindor all in the All Star game than Eduardo Nunez take one of their spots.

I can't imagine the sleepless nights Ned Yost will go through selecting an All-Star from the Twins... He should think outside the box and have a talent show to see who's worthy of the selection.

Brock Holt was indeed the Red Sox only all-star selection last year.  (Xander Bogaerts was in the "final vote" contest but did not win it.)

Also, on the day he was named to the team, Holt was hitting a little better than that (.807 OPS), and just two weeks prior he had been hitting much better (.318 AVG, .893 OPS), which is probably when his name was introduced to the manager for all-star consideration.

Still, there are definitely parallels between him and Nunez.  If Nunez can maintain something like his current .829 OPS into late June, and no other Twin emerges, he's got a shot.
