Article: Twins Trade Kevin Correia, Recall Tommy Milone

Following Saturday night's game, the Minnesota Twins announced that they have traded starting pitcher Kevin Correia to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

 

The Twins signed Correia to a two-year, $10 million contract heading into the 2013 season and, while his numbers were mediocre overall, the right-hander was able to provide innings where a significant share of the staff could not.In 54 starts, Correia finishes his Twins career with a 14-26 record and a 4.49 ERA which was a product of his high-contact/low-bat miss abilities. According to Fangraphs.com, over the past two years Correia had the highest contact rate (80%) and the lowest swinging strike percentage (5.7%).

 

"I enjoyed every minute of it," Correia told reporters in the clubhouse after the game and being told the news. "The guys on the team, the coaching staff, everything was great. I wish we would have won more games, obviously. Besides that, I couldn't have enjoyed the time any more in Minnesota and this organization."

 

To fill Correia's roster spot, the Twins recall left-handed pitcher, Tommy Milone, who they received in the Sam Fuld trade with Oakland. Milone will start on Monday.

Agreed... by all accounts, he is a professional, a good teammate, and he was exactly what the Twins likely thought he would be. He was certainly worth the contract he got. He stayed healthy and gave innings. really, his only truly bad stretch was about his first 8 starts this year.

I'm going to the Twins/Astros game in Houston on Monday and I'm super excited that I don't have to watch Correia. Every Twins game I've seen the past few years has featured Correia getting blown up and I was kinda depressed seeing him as the scheduled starter on Monday. This is the best news I've heard in a while!

I'm happy for him - he's going to a team with tons of talent that is likely going to the playoffs.  Maybe he'll get a World Series ring.  He seems like a good guy, and I wish him well.

Seemed like a good guy.  No bad as 5th starters go.  Good move for all.

 

That being said, it might be as instructive to know where the Twins stand and are headed as a franchise by hearing what KC's time here was meant to accomplish as it would be to hear another defense of Antony's remarks about his definition of FiP as "First strike in innings Pitched".

The angst towards Correia is humorous.  It was time to go but I'm glad the Twins had KC the last two years.  it was bad enough watching all of the AAAA pitchers cycle through the rotation and get destroyed.  Having one more of that craptastic quality would have been even worse.

I wish KC well. He was a valuable contributor to the Twins. By far the most stable and consistent starter over the two years.

Interesting reading Dodgers fans reactions. Of course none of them pay attention to the Twins, so they don't quite understand the depths of the team around him. It seems to be a mix of frustration that he's perceived as a bad pitcher, frustration that he's not Lester, and happy about the trade because they are so pitching thin in the minors.

For as much as a "leader" and good example that Correia is, I wonder if his stubborn refusal to pitch out of the bullpen delayed our opportunities to trade him (assuming he is starting, at least initially, in LA). Confidence is necessary for pro athletes, but I like to see a little more flexibility from role players like KC.

I'm guessing Windle or Anderson are too much for KC. They are both Minnesotans. I'd love Scott Schebler too, but I'm guessing his stock has improved too much at this point.

 

Anyways, the Dodgers did give up Sulbaran for Butera, so hopefully they will give up something of value for KC.

Finally Milone gets a chance.  A proven MAJOR LEAGUE pitcher.  Twins try to use May against the A's, obviously he is not ready for that type of team.  All of the people who wanted May up, remember be careful what you wish for sometimes.  I do think May can be a good pitcher, but let's not crown him as the next Cy Young.

I didn't mind Correia. I'm just glad we are going to get the opportunity to watch other pitchers for the rest of the year.

I'm pretty curious to see the return on Correia.  Ryan got a solid return on Butera last year but this says PTBNL or cash so it might not be that good.
