Twins call up Yennier Cano

Last time I shared a transaction rumor from an unfamiliar Twitter account, it alleged the Twins were going to sign Johnny Cueto. So take this with a grain of salt until it is officially confirmed, but:

I'm going to wildly speculate and say "I think this rumor is TRUE !"  Cotton did throw 63 pitches last night (and did a great job) but he's burned to a crisp at this point so Cano gives them a fresh arm.  He's been pretty good at St. Paul so let's see what he can do in the bigs.

Is Coloumbe headed to the IL? I haven’t read any Twins updates on him yet, but, if he’s out, I vote for Cano to come up

I was as big Cano believer last year when he dominated AA only to get pounded in AAA to some degree.  He might be an answer to the pen but he makes me nervous and if he needs to be added to the 40 man I hope he is completely ready because I would hate to lose him.

It wouldn't be Cano that the Twins would lose. If he is added, he gets options and can freely be sent back and forth to St. Paul (unlike Cotton). The problem is making room on the 40-man roster. The Twins haven't moved anyone to the 60-man IL of late and Sano and Paddack are candidates, as well as Coulombe, if his injury is serious. Ineffective 40-man guys not in the majors (Strotman and Vallimont) could be DFAed as well as Godoy, if the Twins want to only carry two catchers on the 40-man roster.

Yeah that makes sense.  I can't believe how far Strotman the Walk machine and Vallimont the hit and walk machine have fallen.  I was a huge, huge Strotman believer but I just don't see it happening for him now. With the lack of control he could never be trusted to be a reliever.  Vallimont is even worse.  I had such high hopes but yes I think Cano has them beat by a mile right now.

Can anyone catch me up.

Our Twins have made a flurry of 40 man roster additions. I knew of one space open prior to the flurry but I can't find anybody who came off to make room.

How were we able to make a flurry of roster man additions... Thanks.

Covid replacements, I think?

I saw him with the Saints earlier this year and his pitches looked pretty wild, but it sounds like he's getting the job done regardless. I'd be happy to see him called up.

Ahh... I'm not up on the rule. Assuming we must be able to add to the 40 man for Covid?

I was surprised they grabbed Cotton over Cano, even for a short period of time. Granted, they ARE paying Cotton more money than anyone on the Saints roster not named Jake Cave. But....

Picture Cotton and Contreras both back down by the end of the series.

@stringer bell may know better how this works. Bottom line, I'm not really sure.

Mr. Rosterman... you are typically up on the process.

How did we squeeze extra players onto the 40 man. Is there a Covid exception?

They haven’t taken anyone off the 40-man. The two COVID IL players don’t count on the 40-man, so when they’re brought back someone will have to be taken off. 60-day IL candidates would include Sanó and Paddack. DFA could be Godoy (if the Twins want to only carry two catchers on the 40-man) and so far ineffective minor leaguers on the 40-man including Vallimont and Strotman. Cotton could be DFAed again at the risk of losing him via claim or free agency.

I had been thinking that was the right thing to do. No sense wasting that dominance in the minors.

This makes perfect sense as others have mentioned. Cotton will likely be sent out (not sure if he has to go through waivers again as he was a COVID replacement), although Danny could be headed to the IL as well. If that is the move, I would assume Sano goes to the 60 day IL, but we could also see a Godoy/Strotman/Vallimont DFA. It's only a matter of time before Chris is DFA'd, in my opinion. The 40 man is full, the Twins are going to need to add players to it that can give them innings in Minneapolis, not guys who can't get it done in AA. Whether it's now or in July when we (hopefully) make trade additions, I'd be surprised if he sticks around.

As I've stated many times before they need to call up Smeltzer. He has more than enough proved that he deserves it. Besides the Twins have needed very much long relief since Winder was promoted to the rotation. He should be added to the 40 man and stay on it because of all the injuries to the pitching, there are a few players that Smeltzer can replace.

And as I've stated before, that Baldelli being oblivious about long relief need and totalling dependent on short relief, will burn them out, Over extending our rotation isn't the answer because that will burn them out and result in more injuries.

So to put this in the context of last year's rules:

  • Both last year and this year, players on the COVID-IL didn't count against the 40-man roster
  • The difference is that last year, players added to the 40 as COVID replacements could be removed from the 40 without being DFA; this year, they can't.

At least that's what I'm gathering.

They did bring up Cano today, and put Coulombe on the IL with a right hip impingement.

They can, as several teams have done it this year. From what others have said in another thread Levine has said they cannot add someone in this way until 3 players are in Covid protocols. But I've seen several teams do it with just one player in protocols so I'm not sure if that rule was added at the beginning of May maybe?

Very pleased - if we are going to work pitchers in the minors to be RP - then we need to call them up and use them and stop with the pick up of failed mlb pitchers.

I don't know much about Cano but I will tell you this.

I am very excited about any pitcher who steps on the mound for the first time and produces immediate thunder and lightning.

Sounds like a discretionary thing now. MLBTR discussed this rule on April 15, 2022:

Quote

For those wondering why Singer was not eligible to be “returned” to the Triple-A roster without needing to pass through waivers — as we saw with Covid replacement players on several occasions in 2021 — MLBTR has confirmed that the 2022 health-and-safety protocols stipulate that waiver-exempt replacement/substitute players can be utilized only if a team “experiences a significant number of Covid-19 IL placements … such that it implicates a club’s ability to field a competitive team.” That threshold is subject to commissioner Rob Manfred’s discretion, but Knebel was a one-off case with the Phillies and thus could not be replaced by a “substitute” player.

In any case, I don't think it could apply to the Twins right now, because Arraez and Bundy were immediately replaced with guys already on the 40-man roster.
