Considering over the past 3 years, Rodgers has a 2.73 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 9.5 K/9 a player of Rodgers caliber would be a pretty good addition.

Agreed and that's what we should be shooting for. Someone who can slot in the back of the bullpen pitching high leverage playoff innings.

 

Cave has 1 option year remaining after this season and 5+ years of control. Gordon will have 2 option years remaining after this season and 6+ years of control. I would think packaged together they could get a pretty good reliever with a couple years of control left.

A lot of the guys I'd like probably won't be terribly expensive in terms of prospects.

 

Though there are a couple of elite guys I really want who will probably cost more than that, but they probably won't be available until close to the deadline, if at all.

Just posted this in the Nick Nelson weekly wrap thread, but the truth is that we have more than enough ammo to go out and make a few trades if Falvine decide to do so.

 

A combination (to varying degrees of course depending on the return) is more than enough to land starter and/or a bullpen arm or two.

I think they will end up giving up more than they received for Pressly.

 

That model is ideal though. Find middle inning reliever like a Pressly that they can tweak into a late inning stalwart. Gordon and Cave might get you that guy but not an established late inning reliever like Brad Hand.

Not all those prospects are created equal, I would think Larnach, Balazovic, Duran and Javier, don't need another top prospects added to get anybody, most of the others would another piece, two or even three to get a major league relief pitcher.

And too be honest I would rather give Duran and Balazovic and chance in the bullpen as the 5th and/or 6 inning type of reliever before trading either away for a similar person, and yes I realize they are both still in A ball

not sure I'd go that far... I think they have a couple guys on staff that could be that by the end of the season... 

 

That said, I don't think they should risk needing to tweak someone... spend the prospects and get someone doing the job already.

Let's do some cherry picking off of this list from two years ago.

 

1.  Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson for Blake Treinen, Jesus Luzardo, and I've Already Forgotten:  Ouch!  But probably leaning towards the "realistic" type of trade many here tend to see happening.  To me, this is like trading Fernando Romero, Jhoan Duran, and LaMonte Wade...for whom, I don't know.  Or is it just who?

 

The Nat's also got Kintzler for Tyler Watson.  This is a more likely type of deal, IMO.  With Tyler Watson literally being the one to get traded. 

 

2.  This is the haul the Mets received from Boston for old friend Addison Reed.  I'll withhold commentary other than to say it didn't sound like much then, and it still doesn't.  But I'm no expert.

 

3.  My last one--the Yankees acquired Frazier, Robertson, and Kahnle in this deal.

 

Bottom line--with the caveat that this is me just quickly scanning the internet and not really doing any in depth research--The only player traded for relief help that has done anything in MLB in the last two years is Treinen, and he was already kind of not a prospect--he'd started the year as the Nats' closer.  

 

Lizard has dealt with injuries, but looks good.  Everybody else mentioned in these trades has fizzled or never really even sizzled.

 

Reading back through this, I feel like a former #4 pick with decent stats and a famous name is easily the equal of Rutherford, who headlined the deal that netted Robertson and Kahnle.  That deal would be the template I'd like to see replicated.

It really depends on what the team we are trading to really needs. It they need middle infield help and a 4th OFer I think the Twins could get a nice haul. If they are loaded in those areas then not so much

And we got a pretty good starter along with the closer you reference. Allowed us to win the 1991 series.

Those two are definately worth a good reliever. However, if I had a good reliever to trade, I would definately be asking for a lottery ticket low minors player. Unless of course that team thinks either Cave or Gorden can contribute to my next winning cycle, which is possible. I actually think highly of both. In another year when our offense isn't lights-out, both could start for the MLB club.
