Game Thread: Twins @ Detroit 4:10 PM PST (6:10 PM CST) 6/7/2019

The Twins leave Cleveland, eking 1 win out of a three game series.

However, this also means the Twins are currently 4 and 3 on this road trip.

Which leads me to a "fun with numbers" edition of game thread openers.

If a team were to go 4 and 3 every 7 games, the math says the team will, in the course of a season, wind up with a record of 92.56 wins and 69.98 losses.

Adding in another bit of math, if a team goes 6 and 5 every 11 games, the team will end the season with 88.32 wins and 73.60 losses.

Currently, the Twins sit at 41 wins and 20 losses, which, according to real math, done by someone who actually has mathematical ability, gives the Twins a 10.5 game lead in the Central and a .672 winning percentage and projects out to the Twins winning 108.864 games this year.

Now, on to the Detroit Kittens, lead by the Twins once and past leader, Ron Gardenhire.

The Kittens sit at 23 and 26, with a winning percentage of .390 and a projected win total of 63.18 games.

And what do all these numbers mean? Not much, other than it gives me something to write about and opens the door for people to point out I tried to divide by zero or forgot to include the imaginary number function.

Pro tip: never let someone who can barely balance a checkbook near baseball stats and a calculator. GIGO

And now for some thoughts that may or may not have something to do with the game today:

1. Fun calculation 1: Where do the Twins end up if they go 6 and 5 every 11 games the rest of the season?

2. Fun calculation 2: Where do the Twins end up if they go 4 and 3 every 7 games the rest of the season?

3. Fun calculation 3: Considering the quality of umpiring recently, how many ejections of Ron Gardenhire may we expect this next series?

4. Fun calculation 4: If Max Kepler can go 4 for 4 with three home runs in Cleveland, how many home runs will Mr. Rosario hit in Detroit?

Pitching for the Twins:

TBD (this TBD guy must be new. Never heard of him)

Pitching for Detroit:

Matthew Boyd

5. Play ball!

Dsiclaimer: Thread contain feeble attempts at math, in violation of the "no math" rules of the site.

You have been warned.

The Dread Pitcher TBD is ubiquitous and has started games for different teams all over the league.

Inconceivable!

However I hear he's mostly dead.

You rang?

Hey Blake - make that 36 losses for Detroit.

I was wondering how 3 games under .500 could amount to a .390 winning percentage.

I had just worked out the same thing but then I read the comment about the math being done by someone that actually has mathematical ability.      I have great faith in claims made on the internet so double checked that Twins Daily is still on the internet.   Having completed this due diligence I have come to the conclusion that you are wrong and Blake is right.    Just odd that we have played 12 fewer games than the Tigers at this point.

Heh.

Oops, I tried to actually copy what they had on MLB.com and, misread what they had up.

No means to correct, either.

On the up side, it means people actually read what I wrote.

There is a math text book where the very first example is flawed, and i am pretty sure it was intentional, to encourage the reader to double check everything.

If ever i do math again, that is the textbook i will match wits with...

I don't think it's right, killing innocent pitchers...

Great. Just great.

Another waiver wire pickup.

Fabulous job, Twins.

Can't we just outsource the math questions above?  I'd rather pay someone to do that then do it myself...Seems exhausting to me. It's Friday.

I'd like the Twins chances more if the pitcher had a name. But, I am very curious about who it will be.

Hi, my name is,

Guys! Google does math for you! I just typed it into the search bar and... oh, somehow I got porn results. Lots of porn results. Oh, the librarian said I'd be banned from using their free internet if this happened again.

Gee whiz, this TBD guy hasn't even pitched yet and you're already down on him.

Man, must be tough to pull the trigger on sitting Kepler. He just broke out of a slump the day before with one of the best games at the plate in the MLB this year.

Also, is something wrong with Sano, or just another maintenance day? Not having one of your biggest RH power threats in the lineup against a tough lefty isn’t ideal. Even so, this is a pretty mean looking lineup against LHP tonight.

That's a righty heavy lineup facing a tough lefty...

Speaking of which... wonder what Detroit would want for Boyd in a trade. He'd be a really good addition to the rotation.

Are we allowed to start thinking like Yankees fans?

I hope our baseball team wins tonight.

If they don't, at least they aren't Mitch Haniger (look up what his injury is if you dare).
