  1. A few years ago, when the Twins inadvertently made a playoff appearance, I was notified, that, should the Twins progress, I would have the honor of introducing a play-off game thread. Then, the Twins bombed in the Bronx, following up that loss by then limping to a dreadful conclusion of the 2018 campaign. During a busy, yet head-scratching, off-season, the FO signed new players, coaches and a manager, trying to bolster a team that clearly wasn’t getting the job done. Amazingly enough, the FO put together an excellent team, a team that set both team and MLB records, setting the stage for one of the best seasons I can remember since the 1987 Squad won it all. Which bring us to today, a day in which I hope to see the Twins bomb the Bronx and show those darn Yankees the Twins are all out of chewing gum. With that, we go to some thoughts about the Days of Future Passed: The Past: 1987: Bert Blyleven: Cagey veteran leader of the 87 pitching squad. The Future: 2019: Who will step into the role this year? The Past: 1987: Frankie "Sweet Music" Viola: Future Cy Young winner. The Future: 2019: Is Jose Berrios or Brusdar Graterol the equivalent on the current staff? The Past: 1987: Mount Crushmore, consisting of Kent "Buy a Vowel" Hrbek, Tom "Bruno" Brunanski and Gary "The Rat" Gaetti. The Future 2019: Lead by Nelson Cruz, Mount Crushmore was reborn in "The Bomba Squad." The Past 1987: The relief core, embodied in Juan "Senior Smoke" Berenguer, helped nail down the Series win. The Future: 2019: The relief core, lead by the likes of Trevor May, Taylor Rogers and Tyler Duffey have come into their own. The Past: 1987:Manager Tom Kelly, man of few, but sometimes pungent, words. The Future: 2019:Manager Rocco Baldelli, man of more than few words May the Twins, in the immortal words of Captain Kirk, "Fire!" and exact their revenge on the Yankees! And now, a word from our very special guest, RiverBrian! Mauer: Guys I am pumped... Tonight the Twins open the playoffs against the Yankees. I am so proud of those guys. Morgan: Why do you always play the Yankees in the playoffs? There are 13 other teams in the American League... Why is it always the Yankees? McCarthy: They have really good hotels in New York. They don't want to play Oakland or Cleveland. No mints on the pillow. Mauer: Listen, Umm, I don't know what team you guys are cheering for but we could really use your support. what do you say... Can you guys join me and be Twins Fans? Montana: Umm... Well... Sure, why not. Mauer: Thanks Joe... (Turns to look at Maddon) How bout' you? Maddon: How much will you pay me? Mauer: What? Maddon: Pay me... You know... I'm out of work right now and I'm telling you that my loyalty can be purchased. Morgan: Yeah... Money will do the trick for me as well. Mauer: Hey... I'm also out of work now. I still pay the rent for this meeting spot. I pay for all of your daily airline flights here to hang out. I buy the beer and the food. This is even my grill. I pay for everything. Maddon: It's gonna take cash. McCarthy: I spent a long time in politics Joe... that's how it works... Money buys influence. Mauer: Fine... How much? Morgan: (Looks at Maddon) Umm... 100 bucks (Maddon nods his head). Yeah... 100 Bucks. Mauer: I can't believe this... Here ya go. Montana: Where's mine? Mauer: You already agreed. Montana: I didn't know you were handing out cash. (Mauer gives him $100). Perfect... We are Twins fans tonight! Mauer: Tonight? Maddon: Yeah... It's a hundred bucks a game. You'll need at least two hundred more for a series win. Mauer: Well, that was 900 dollars I wasn't expecting to spend, I only have 74 thousand dollars left in my wallet. Morgan: There's an ATM around the corner. Maddon: We should have asked for more. Mauer: (Looks at McCarthy). What about you... Do you need 300 dollars? McCarthy: No... I'm a ghost... I don't have pockets. Play Ball!
  2. Today is a momentous day, in that I bid farewell to regular season game thread duties. Hard to believe, 159 games later, it's time to move on, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D6xSDffm6c and look forward to the playoffs. Yes, the playoffs go through "those guys" in a town memorialized by the "Chairman of the Board:" *Frank's voice is decent but the big band behind Frank makes the song. This season has been one heck of a ride: And the ride couldn't have ended in much better fashion. Well, the regular season ride, anyway. But, one last stop in KC, taking on the Royals and this series also represents the swan song for Mr. Ned Yost. It's going to be a bit odd, not having Ned Yost on the bench when the Twins play KC. I have yet to decide if I'll miss the double steals or not. And with that, some stuff to amuse, confuse and bemuse: 1. The Twins are going to the playoffs! 2. The Twins are going to the playoffs! 3. The Twins are going to the playoffs! 4. The Twins are going to the playoffs! Startling lineups: Pitching for the Twins: Jose Berrios Position players: 1. TBD 2. TBD 3. TBD 4. TBD 5. TBD 6. TBD 7. 3. Today, the magic number stands at 3. Not 4, not 2, and 5 is right out. The number is three and three shall be the number. *I put in the whole thing because I can relate to the "soiled armor" bit what with some of the things that happened during the season. Now, the Twins head into Detroit and the Twins faithful are looking at this series, knowing things are counting down to the post-season. But, we are not counting our playoffs before they hatch, are we? The Twins head into Detroit and, if the past is anything to go by, they will exact their revenge on Detroit. (Well, okay, the Twins have been exacting revenge on Detroit all year....) And, with that, we go to stuff to think about. (Yeah, as if I really put a lot of thought into some of this stuff. Oh crud, I typed that out loud, didn't I?) 1. Detroit: Rebuilding or looking to rebuild the rebuild? 2. Twins: Can they beat the Yankees in home runs this year? 3. Bomba squad: Can they keep on bombaing? 4. Ginger or MaryAnne?* *Just had to mess with ya'll a bit! Lineups: 5. Play ball!
  4. The Twins took two steps forward toward the goal of winning the division during the series of games against the Sox. Unfortunately, after that second step, the Twins paused and, well, Cleveland decided they need to keep pace. It's hard to watch when one can almost touch or see the Twins with the division title. *So what if I had to reach a bit to fit in this song. On the upside, if the Twins keep trucking on they should win the division. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaQ8r-SwR2c Now, KC is in town and the Twin will need to keep moving on toward a division title. And, with that, another chapter in series game thread openers comes to a close. Please stay tuned, as there more thrilling chapters to come! And now, for that which we all have been waiting for, some stuff to ponder: *A portentous list needs a pretentious opening. 1. Shag carpet: Charming relic or insanity disguised as fashion? 2. Platform shoes: Fashionable or unconscionable? 3. Bell bottom pants: To die for or to die of embarrassment for? 4: Pet rock: Clever fad or fad foolishness? Pitching for the Twins: Kyle Gibson Pitching for KC: Mike Montgomery 5. Play ball!
  5. I started typing this thread and, through the magic of hitting the wrong keys, managed to lose everything I'd written. My loss is probably Twins Faithful gain. The Twins, after taking two from Cleveland in Cleveland suddenly seemed to remember they were guests and promptly gave back a game. I'm not sure where Miss Manners comes down when it comes to sports etiquette but it seems to me that, in pro sports, guest or not, sweeping the leg is called for. Now the Twins return home and the lineup is slowly returning to health and starting to contribute that which we've missed these last few games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q3uPysQaZY On paper, this looks to be a mismatch. However, the game is not decided on paper so, let's hope the Twins get the job done against the White Sox. With that, some things to argue, I mean, flame each other, I mean, discuss politely over tea and crumpets with pinky finger properly extended. 1. Crescent Rolls or Croissants? 2. Earl Grey or Jasmine? 3. Caribou or Starbucks? 4. Popover or Muffins? Lineups: Jose Berrios ® 1. Luis Arraez (L) 2B 2. Jorge Polanco (S) SS 3. Nelson Cruz ® DH 4. Eddie Rosario (L) LF 5. Mitch Garver ® C 6. Jake Cave (L) RF 7. Miguel Sano ® 3B 8. Marwin Gonzalez (S) 1B 9. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) CF Reynaldo Lopez ® 1. Leury Garcia (S) CF 2. Yoan Moncada (S) 3B 3. Jose Abreu ® DH 4. Eloy Jimenez ® LF 5. James McCann ® C 6. Matt Skole (L) 1B 7. Danny Mendick ® SS 8. Yolmer Sanchez (S) 2B 9. Ryan Goins (L) RF 5. Play ball!
  6. This is the city, Cleveland, Ohio. A city unlike any other, in that two titans of baseball will be meeting in a head to head contest. Some may call it destiny, that these two team would meet like this. Others would look to MLB and their scheduling gurus. Either theory is nice, but we deal in facts, just the facts. And the facts are: Cleveland keeps trying to catch the Twins, but the Twins, much like Road Runner, seem to find a way to avoid getting caught. But, in the end, there can only be two! *figuring both teams make the playoffs, natch! Now, for something completely different! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk-kQSz-Qv0 Okay, maybe not, as it's time for, 5 things to ponder! 1. Orange Marmalade or Grape Jelly? 2. Sourdough or English muffin? 3. Scrambled or poached? 4. Bacon or sausage? *Lineups go here!* 5. Play ball!
  7. Running a bit late here, as I didn't realize the start time was moved up a bit. Odd start time, but, this has been an odd season. This season has had more ups and downs than "Wild Thing" of Valley Fair fame! *No, I'm not about to bring Mitch Williams into the discussion! Oh, wait... But, and we're carrying over a theme here, it has been a magical season for the Twins faithful this year. *Yes, I'm reaching. Content is content! Even if it's youtube video! *Internet 101...cat videos, because, well, cat videos. Now, for some thoughts: 1. No matter how you look at it, Cleveland still struggled to win the last game against the Twins and the Twins were fielding close to Quad A squad. 2. The Twins need to take care of business against the Nationals because there's no way Cleveland does anything but put the hurt on the Angels. 3. Cruz is back in the lineup. 4.Arraez, unfortunately, is in the leadoff spot. Not, not unfortunately because he's incapable of leading off. Rather, it's unfortunate because it means Max is out of the lineup. I apologize for the lateness of this thread, life has sort of caught up with me recently. With that, 5. Play ball!
  8. Today opens an important late season series for the Twins. And, this series also bring out the magic of the baseball season. For instance, the following: Of course, there is also another kind of magic But the true magic lies in a number, specifically, the magic number: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/34786-magic-number-thread/?do=findComment&comment=910891 *See above thread for the countdown. Of course, transportation to Twins games is important: I admit, at one point, maybe many points, I had a bit of this going on: Because I thought perhaps things weren't going quite as they looked. But, here we are, the Central title there for the Twins to grab. And, all they have to do is get through Cleveland. Yeah, all the Twins have to do...and as we're well aware, Cleveland isn't going quietly into the night. It's going to be another barn-burner of a series and let the best team, (best team defined as "The Twins") win! With that, here are some things to think about: 1. Brad Hand...close game, Brad is probably good for at least one win, for the Twins. 2. Duffey dominated the Red Sox? How cool is that? 3. The defense behind Twins pitching the last game at Fenway was fun to watch. 4. Is "Rally Squirrel" actually a thing? Lineups: *Twins don't have their lineup up yet. Sort of odd. 5. Play ball!
  9. I was at a loss as to what to write for this series opener. So, I consulted with my very good friend, Christopher Robin to see if I could find some good insight into the Detroit Tiggers: Quickly realizing that Christopher Robin might not be the best source for information about the Detroit Tiggers, I decided to look elsewhere for inspiration that didn't involve much perspiration. *Yeah, that character was modeled on me trying to come up with ideas for game threads. Yes, we're going to ignore the fact the movie came out long before TD and the web became ubiquitous. After the Twins decided spotting the Sox a couple of games at home was a bad idea, they brought the broom out for the initial three game series in Chicago. Now, hopefully, the broom is in safe storage, awaiting use after the Twins are done with Detroit. With that, Reader poll! (I say "poll," you say, "trying to see if anyone is paying attention.") 1. Femme Fatale of black and white movie era: Bette Davis or Barbara Stanwyck? 2. Comedic actress of the black and white era: Irene Dunn or Gracie Allen? 3. Best noir detective: Humphrey Bogart or Robert Mitchum? 4. Best suspense director: Alfred Hitchcock or George Cukor? Lineups: 5. Play ball!
  10. SSO1 was nice enough to come up with some idea for me to crib from, I mean, tossed out as a challenge to use as game thread material. Not one to lightly cast aside ideas for game threads, much like a 10 year old me scrambling for the returnable pop bottle that would be used to buy Tops trading cards, I grabbed that list and set it aside as the treasure it is. In looking at the list, it's hard to decide if I should go in the order the ideas, I mean, challenges, as listed or should I start with the easiest one first? See archived game thread here for list of ideas: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/34601-game-thread-david-twins-vs-tigers-610pm-edt-8242019-ad/ I oughtthay bemay igpay atinlay ouldway be unfay. Utbay, I ecidedbay to ivegay athay deaia up. Then, I looked at the IpRay AnVay InkleWay idea and thought, neato! Imagine, you've been Twins fan these last few years but, for some reason, took a 9 month long snooze after the Twins tanked in ought 18 and then woke up to find out the Twins are in first place, are leading the league in bombas! (though you wonder what, exactly, a "bomba" is) You rush out, buy a jersey, and have the name, "Rip Van Twinkie" embroidered on the back, because, hey, Twins fan, and you've slept a long time. Might as well celebrate! Then, SSO1 mentions "Daves Top 10" being a rejected idea. To which I reply, "Challenge Accepted!" 1. Seventies rock bands: Rare Earth or Grand Funk Railroad? 2. Motown: Gladys Knight and the Pips or The Four Tops? 3: Iconic Sixties movie: The Magnificent 7 or Bullitt? 4: Iconic Seventies movie: MASH or Kelly's Heroes? 5: Iconic baseball player of the sixties: Killebrew or Koufax? 6: Iconic car of the sixties: Charger, Mustang or Camaro? 7: Iconic personality of the sixties: Paul Harvey or Rod Serling? And with that, Lineups: *: Play ball!
  11. After the Monday game against Chicago, with the attending, shall we say, interesting, strike zone, I thought I'd dust off and recycle this blast from the past: * strikezoid: noun pronounced strike ĕh (tip of the cap to our northern neighbors) zoid antecedent: strike zone Definition: a curious shape that defies normal geometric conventions. This shape, which changes from minute to minute, is designed to drive both batters and fans insane. In fact, this shape, while correctly known as a "strikezoid" is often confused with the "strike zone." However, since strike zones are rectangular in shape, the distinction quickly becomes obvious. (although, someone did point out that, in fact, a true "strike zone" has 7 sides. But, adding up all those sides is math and we all know math is verboten game threads. Unless it isn't) Back to the subject at hand: strikezoid. It has become apparent the umpires have designed a new shape for the strike zone. Henceforth known as the "strikezoid." Curiously, the strikezoid seems to be somewhat of a shape shifter, favoring first one team, then the other. I'm not sure why this is, however, I'm just your humble observer and offer no explanations. *Also trying to appease the Thread Writers Guild. They seem to take electron quotas very seriously! With that, on to Detroit, a team that is showing signs of life, if one defines "life" as the same reading given by an electrocardiogram attached to a bowl of jello. We should have a great game to watch this evening. And, by great game, a game in which the Twins turn Detroit into rubble and make the rubble bounce. And now, for some stuff to think about. Okay, maybe not ponder so much as, reader poll! (Yes, I am trying to find out if anyone actually reads this stuff!) 1. Classic horror films: Dracula or Frankenstein? 2. Classic Screen beauties: Grace Kelly or Ingrid Bergman? 3. Classic Screen Presence: John Wayne or Cary Grant? 4. Classic Big Band Singers: Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra? Lineups: 5. Play ball!
  12. After mailing in the last thread (FYI, trying to FedEx electrons to TD is marginally easier than herding cats. Marginally.) I decided to put some thought and effort into this game thread series opener. ("game thread series opener" is a trick to increase word count because, nothing says "lots of thought went into the opener" quite like a bunch of words on a screen) What was interesting about the "mailing it in" start of the game series thread openers was the Twins sweeping Texas, and, apparently, Tony Diaz switching uniforms so he could show Texas the proper way to run their way out of innings. Which brings us to today, Twins taking on the White Sox, a team the Twins have handled pretty well this year. Unfortunately, though, I cannot engage in my usual mockery of Sox fielding, due to the Twins have their own problems when it comes to catching the ball. Curse you Twins, for taking some of my best material from me! (Now there is a batting practice comment. There will be points awarded to best riff) The also-rans get: And, due to someone pointing out the obvious, we shall toss up some food for thought: 1: New York or Ribeye?2: Bacon or Ribs?3: Veronica or Betty?4: Mashed or Baked? Speaking of baked: 5: Mel or Russell? (can't forget the ladies!) Lineups: 6: Play ball! I waited just so I could get the lineups into the game thread, but the Twins left it really late!
  13. Unfortunately, or, fortunately, depending on your view of my game thread openers, this one isn't much more than a "mail it in edition." *Internet 101: When in doubt, go for the kitten. But, when things seem bleakest, there's always music to pick you up: *Recorded at the old Blues Alley, Minneapolis, Good times, good times. The Twins are at Texas for a 4 game series, and, since the race in the Central has heated up, should be a good chance for the Twins to gain some ground on Cleveland. It's crunch time and we've got a barn burner of a race for the division title this year. And, with that, we go to the 5 things that should, or should not, be mentioned: 1. Parkay or Butter? 2. Skim or Whole milk? 3. Cheese or Cheez Whiz? 4. Coke or Pepsi? Lineups: 5. Play ball!
  14. Well, the day managed to slip away, because, for some reason, work decided that I should actually work at work, rather than look at baseball stuff and think about game threads. The nerve! I shan't go over history, because it's over and done with. Instead, I plan to take each day, one at a time, put forth my best effort, and let the chips fall where they may. Now that the standard platitudes are behind us, I hope the Twins get after it and battle their tails off the rest of the season. It's a race and the Twins are contenders! And, because things are running way behind, it's time to put some random thoughts down: !. What was Diaz thinking? 2. What was Diaz thinking? 3. What was Diaz thinking? 4. What was Diaz thinking? Lineups: 5. Play ball!
  15. After the fiasco of the last thread, pro tip: don’t do something that stands out, otherwise people develop expectations, I realized that I needed to see if I could bring a bit more culture to Twins Daily. Well, okay, not so much realized as had a couple of people think poetry was on the groovy side.* ** *By fiasco, I mean something people wish to see more of. Unless they were just humoring me, in which case, the jokes on them! **What do mean it's not culture? Says, "Culture Club" right there! Now, for the groovy part:* *What do you mean Bruce Campbell and "The Evil Dead" isn't groovy? Diamond Dreams I gaze upon a field of shimmering green, And, with wondering eyes will have seen, Large men with bats that strut and preen, Youths lean forward with eyes full of wonder, White baseball tear the very air asunder, Players swing bats and make sound like thunder. The crowd doth roar and holler with delight! The home team wins, all go home happy this beautiful night! Some random thoughts. (You actually got this far? I'm impressed with your ability to battle your tail off and get after it!) 1. If I could have pulled off Iambic Pentameter, I would have. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that even means. 2. Free verse was also an option. Just as quickly, it became not an option. 3. Limericks are passe. 4. Haiku was done in the comments last time. Oh, wow, there's absolutely no baseball in this opener. What to do, what to do? Ah, I know, Lineups: Make no mistake about it. this is a huge series and will probably set the tone for the rest of the season. These are two very good, but flawed, teams. I am really looking forward to the series because I expect it should be some high drama baseball. 5. Play Ball!
  16. There once was a guy named Cruz, Who liked his afternoon snooze. And, once his nap was done, He'd hit more baseballs a ton, Yet another pitcher gets the blues! Tonight brings the Braves to town for a three game series and, if recent history is any guide, opposing pitchers need to be brave when facing the Twins lineup. *Our very own Tom Froemming came up immediately when I searched You Tube. The Twins have been putting on quite the power display, to the point it seems like fans would be disappointed with a 10-0 win, if there weren't any home runs hit. (okay, not really. Or, are we that spoiled by this team?) And, with that, I realize I've run out of time, and Ideas, so, we will wrap this up with some thoughts. Questions? Random letters tossed together that need their own version of the Rosetta stone to decipher? 1. If the Twins win, and no balls leave the park, is it truly a win? (yeah, ya'll saw that one coming, didn't you?) 2. Do we have an over/under line on baseballs hit out of the park? 3. Should the line on home runs also include Atlanta? 4. Dozier threw a ball to Suzuki and Escobar hit one out of the park. Only in baseball. Lineups: 5. Play ball! And now, for some nostalgia:
  17. After the exciting win yesterday, and after perusing the game thread yesterday, I came to the conclusion some of the Twins faithful needed some help surviving the game Nothing like high comedy, drama and angst....all in one game, which encapsulates everything that goes with being a Twins fan this year. The highs and lows of following the Twins this year have been nothing short of spectacular. Now, the Yankees come to town and they've been playing good baseball, boo!, and, have been a Twins nemesis for as long as Target Field has been in existence. Not to worry, though, Twins fans, because I have come up with the perfect way to deal with watching the Twins play the Yankees: And now, for some random thoughts. (Is there any way to add a bit of reverb to these things so this comes across as the portentous announcement it is? Pretentious?) 1. Yankees. Enough said.2. Twins. Enough said.3. Twins fans: Hoping to survive the next series.4. Twins bullpen. Said too much already. Pitching for the Twins: Martin Perez Pitching for the ************ Yankees: C.C. Sabathia 5. Play ball!
  18. Today marks another day in the saga of Twins Daily game thread brilliance. Well, some call it mediocrity, but, as the author I say, "Brilliance." The Twins got off to a decent start the second half, taking two of three from Cleveland. Then, some team from some where came into town and some things happened. And that's all we'll say about that. Today, another good baseball team comes to town and the Twins get another tough test. And, unfortunately, this kind of test is not graded on the curve. This is a pass/fail test across 4 days. Even more interesting, this test continues over the next few months in different locations. And there is no mercy rule with this test. Nope. None. Nada. The test continues until only one is left standing. Will the Twins be left standing? Will they be the only ones? Please keep tuned in and find out! Continuing on with this theme, some things to think about: 1. Batman TV series: Seriously good fun or seriously campy? 2. The better joker: Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson or Cesar Romero? 3. Best Batman: Adam West, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Christian Bale or Val Kilmer? 4. Best Penguin: Burgess Meredith or Danny DeVito? Pitching for the Twins: Kyle Gibson Pitching for Oakland: Mike Fiers 5. Play Ball!
  19. I was sitting quietly, minding my own business, imbibing some game thread inspiration when, wouldn't you know it, someone thought they should tell me my behavior was inappropriate. I looked at the interloper with a steely glaze and asked them who they thought they were, interrupting my contemplation of a very important matter? I further explained that drinking inspiration is a time-honored method of writing and how dare they question my methods? Next thing I knew, I was on the street, my meager possessions in hand and cursing the busybody who dared question my methods. I guess I shouldn't have been drinking amber colored liquid from a cut glass tumbler during working hours in front of the boss. It's been a nice break from baseball, though, I admit some withdrawal symptoms. But, I was able to get my baseball fix through Twins Daily, which helped get me through those rough moments. Call it, "Methadone for Fans." "Fanadone?" The Twins are at Cleveland and I look forward to this series. I hope the Twins can pick up a game against Cleveland but, there's no way I can claim to be other than nervous about this series. Still, though, it's going to be fun to watch and I'm really looking forward to it. As, I'm sure, are a lot of Twins fans. And now, it's that time we all look forward to in Game Threads! 5 Things To Think About! 1. Ice in top shelf whiskey: Abomination or abomination?2. Cold beer, cool beer or warm beer? Which is right?3. Ball Park Nachos made with cheese whiz: Abomination or grotesque?4. Cowbell or vuvuzela: minor or major annoyance? Lineups: 5. Play ball!
  20. Because we're winding down into the All Star break, I thought today would be a good day to look back. With a quick Google Search, I came up with some stuff that will allow me to escape the rigors of putting together a real game thread and, instead, dine off the work of others, while taking credit for my complete lack of inspiration. Without further ado, here goes: 1687 Isaac Newton's great work PRINCIPIA published by Royal Society in England. Outlines his laws of motion and universal gravitation. *How we got Launch angle, spin rate, WHIP and WHIP. 1904 NY Giants 18-game winning streak ends as Phillies win 6-5 in 10 innings at Huntington Park *I'm going to defer to Chief on this one. His knowledge of the event is probably contemporary, unlike mine. The Twins final stop, before taking a break, one that appears to be much needed, is Texas. It seems the Twins are doing a good job of catching teams on the upswing while they're currently running just a bit flat. Personally, I think these teams are catching fire just long enough to bother the Twins, then flame out, while the Twins will catch their breath and take the rest of the season by storm. This team has been very good so far this year and I'm sticking with they'll continue to thrill and chill fans. *no real reason, just thought this was cool. No for some random and possibly related baseball thoughts: 1. All Star Break approaches! 2. Two Twins were voted into the All Star game! 3. May various players on the Twins take a well deserved break and come back better, stronger, faster! 4. Pitching for the Twins: Martin Perez Pitching for Texas: Adrian Sampson Lineup for the Twins: 1. Max Kepler (L) RF 2. Jorge Polanco (S) SS 3. Nelson Cruz ® DH 4. Mitch Garver ® C 5. Marwin Gonzalez (S) LF 6. C.J. Cron ® 1B 7. Luis Arraez (L) 3B 8. Jonathan Schoop ® 2B 9. Byron Buxton ® CF Lineup for TX: Tabula Rasa 5. Play Ball!
  21. We interrupt your day with this important announcement: The Twins will be on the West Coast, enjoying the hospitality of the Oakland Athletics. This special announcement was made possible by a generous grant from the following company: *Sponsor note: May also be of use to calm some Twins fans. Now, on to the game itself, but first a word from our sponsor: *Coming soon to a store near you The Twins are coming off a tough outing against the Sox, but, the "June Swoon" this year saw the Twins go 15-12, which I suspect is an acceptable outcome, all things considered. Now, on to Oakland, but first, a brief commercial break: *Man, I wish the IT department where I work was this good. Oh wait, I am the IT department.... Oakland/Twins series has the makings of a fun stretch of games, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Twins match-up against Oakland. With that said, on to our regularly scheduled "5 Thoughts, questions and random musings" section of the Game Thread Series Opener. But first another word from our sponsor: 1. Odorizzi: All Star! 2. Polanco: All Star! 3. Rosario: Should be an All Star! 4. Cron: Should be an All Star! *Decided I needed some more music. 5. Play ball!
  22. Today represents the half-way point of the Twins schedule. The Twins sit currently at 52-28 and the math says (Add the 2, carry the 6, divide the numerator and multiply by 1) this evening represents game 81. I'm still surprised the Twins have 52 wins at this point of the season. I'd have been happy with 51, maybe even 50! But 52? Get out of town... The Twins train, despite injuries, continues to roll on and win games. Which depth, as has been pointed out by others, has been key to the Twins continuing success this year. Now, the Twins, after playing all day and half the night, move on to Chicago to play the White Sox. Hopefully, the Twins shake off the long drawn out game of yesterday and put the hurt on the White Sox. *A bit of music for Carole With that, we move on to the 5 QUESTIONS section: 1. Berrios: Is Berrios settling back into his groove. 2. Sox: Are they truly getting better? 3. Twins: Are they mainlining coffee in order to stay awake for this game? 4. Errors: Will the Sox continue to trend in a positive direction, for the Twins, when it comes to fielding mishaps? Pitching for the Twins: Jose Berrios Pitching for the Sox: TBD (Wow, this TBD guy must get DFA'd a lot, because this is the second time the Twins have faced him) 5. Play Ball!
  23. It's Tuesday, no baseball yesterday, well, no baseball that counts, which means Monday was an off-day for the home town nine and, it gives me a chance to toss some word salad and create this series opener thread masterpiece. The object of this opener, much like the opener used in games, is to get the ball rolling and then pass the baton to the bulk-writers. The guys who do the heavy lifting for the rest of series. Which brings me to the Rays. The Rays are credited with starting the "opener" then "primary" pitcher. Truth of the matter is, though, TD has long used this format. I think the Rays merely lifted the idea from Twins Daily and rebranded to suit their needs. With that said, I hope Twins Daily, and assorted associated writers, miscreants, low lifes and ne're do wells understand the grave responsibility they have when it comes to influencing baseball. Call it: "The TD Effect." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=444hQMLKwjA&t=74s *I've been trying to work this in some how and, well, decided to just force the issue. Mainly because I think it's funny. With that, here are some things to think about: 1. Can Mr. Gibson rebound from his last not so good start? 2. Can Blake Snell, awesome name and all, fall on his face, just for the Twins? 3.Can Mr. Sano became a regular contributor to the "Bomba" squad? 4. Will Mr. Arraez be allowed to show that he belongs over the next few games? Pitching for the Twins: Kyle Gibson Pitching for the Rays: Blake Snell 5. Play Ball!
  24. Last night, the Twins...never mind, that's all in the past, let's look to the future, the Twins playing KC at Kauffman Stadium. Whenever I think of Kauffman Stadium, I think of the days when KC wasn't good and the stands had as many Twins fans as Royals fans. Then, KC became a baseball powerhouse, sort of like the guy who was turned into a newt and got better. For a bit, it looked like KC was turning back into a newt, and their record indicates this may be so. However, the last time Twins played KC...oh wait, that's in the past and we shall refrain from looking back. Forward, ever forward. Currently, the Twins have almost the opposite record of KC: Twins are 48 and 25 while KC is 25 and 49. With that, some things to think about: Pitching for the Twins: Jake Odorizzi Pitching for KC: Glenn Sparkman Play Ball!
  25. After the nail-biter of yesterday's game, divisional rival KC come to town. This is a team the Twins beat, well, didn't lose to, earlier this year. Now, later in the season, the Twins are a legitimate MLB powerhouse and KC, well, KC is not. Are there some cracks in the Twins machine? Yes, but they are limited to the bullpen and, with Seattle being one of the best hitting teams in the league, it made a 10-5 game a bit closer than the score would otherwise indicate. Now, on to KC. KC has fallen on hard times. With a record of 22 and 46, and a winning percentage of .324 (checked twice this time!) KC is very beatable rather than a "didn't lose to" team. The Twins should take this series handily, but, like many, I get nervous when such teams come to town. Yes, the Twins have been taking care of business but, this is a division rival and division rivalries always seem to bring the best out. Especially against the team that is leading the division. Maybe we could talk KC into saving some of their effort for Cleveland? Maybe rest up a bit while in town? With that, some things to think about: 1. Brad Keller turned in a stellar yet losing effort against Giolito last time he pitched. 2. Kyle Gibson turned in a less than stellar effort against the Tigers last time he pitched. 3. Are the Twins done with soft-tossing lefties yet? 4. I'd forgotten how much fun "small ball" can be. Pitching for the Twins: Kyle Gibson Pitching for KC: Brad Keller 5. Play ball!
