Trade Deadline Discussion Thread

Well, although I was one who would've ridden things out to see what happened, I applaud the FO for going all in on this.  Regardless of whatever hope I had for these guys, something hasn't been quite right with this team.  Maybe this purge will help.

So which 11 (I know, probably less) minor leaguers already in the Twins system get dumped?

I've been all for dumping expiring deals for lotto tickets but honestly I might've kept Dozier for this return.

The package coming back + Gordon's uncertainty makes me lean towards that QO at this point.

I actually like the Raley kid raking at Tulsa this year - LH spray hitter with extra base power who also destroyed both rookie ball and high A the last two years.

Those D2 guys can sneak thru the cracks - anytime you see even a small sample size of BA over .600 and OPS over 1.500, yeah, that's destroying it.

One thing.....Dozier has not been quiet in his criticism of past moves, and he may have wanted out of here, and they may have obliged him on that, to spare the clubhouse.

I REALLY DOUBT THAT is the case, but it is possible.

I'd love to hear him elaborate on his comments from earlier in the season regarding his "frustrations."

We probably never will, but it'd be nice to have some idea of what was going on.

I'll be honest, I'm not excited about a single player brought back at the deadline. A bunch of C level prospects and residual type guys. I get it, who we traded really wasn't worth a heck of a lot and that is the main part of it.

I was hoping for at least one guy from all these trades though with some major upside. As it stands, there isn't a guy brought over that will make our top 20 prospect list, is there???

Not mad by any means though. All of the guys dealt had expiring deal, other than Pressly. My hope is that some of these guys they picked up will be used in a year or so to package up and bring some real talent in here...

The two prospects from Houston are already slotted into #11 and #14, and one of the prospects from Arizona at #17 (MLB Pipeline rankings).

So that's 3 in our top 20- with another at #22.

IMO, Alcala has almost as much upside as anyone in our system, aside from Lewis.

I think the fact he was traded (and the return) says the FO had no intention of giving him a QO.

That very well could be the case.

I see an August/September 2018 future.

Which was worth more than the org filler and contract swap they got for him.

Raley looks like a real prospect to me.

Still unlikely to make it, like most prospects, but he looks like more than filler to me.

I get you didn't want to give up on this season Chief. But, the FO clearly did, so the returns have to be looked at in that context.

Yeah, but there's only about a dozen people watching Twins games in September during a losing season.

So the final returns for Escobar, Dozier, Pressly, Duke, and Lynn are by level:

R: Rijo, Celestino

A: Duran, Maciel, Costello

A+: De La Trinidad

AA: Alcala, Raley, Smeltzer, De Jong

AAA: Austin

If nothing else the added players should help Elizabethton, Cedar Rapids, and Fort Myers to compete for the playoffs in their respective leagues.

EDIT: I forgot to add De Jong and Costello

Based on a Wolfson tweet it sounds like the Twins intend to pick up Rodney's option for next season.

I think I read this correctly, but my eyes are bleeding, so I'm not sure.....They have already committed to picking up Rodney for next year?

After trading Escobar and Pressly - not too surprised they also traded Dozier even for the small return we got.  No way they were offering him a QO.    Getting Forsythe back is a bit curious though since they were making the same amount - seems like that should have increased our return.   Be interesting to see who is playing 2B and the other infield spots the rest of the season.    Does Polanco move to 2B and Adrianza at SS?    Do we keep Forsythe?   He has played a little 3B in the past as well.    If we thought Dozier was having a bad year - well Forsythe is worse.

I move Polanco to 2B, and give Machado 50MM next year......whatever it takes.

Then I deal Gordon when he's hot in the first half next year.

Then I wake up from my dream....

I can't imagine they've committed to anything. Sounds more like hedging their bets.

Twins_89,

You left out the two players we received from Seattle: De Jong and Costello.

You're right, there are just too many prospects coming in to keep track of.

I think the return probably was increased by the fact that the Twins took back Forsythe, he and his contract certainly had a negative value. I think it's an indication of Dozier's low, low value that the Twins couldn't have gotten anything if they didn't take back negative value.

Also, there's little doubt in my mind that Dozier goes on a tear now. No one's fault but his.

Maybe these things are related.

Pretty sure the reason they took back Forsythe is because LA made them. The market for Dozier obviously wasn't very hot.

Thought process I find particularly concerning is the taking on of contracts to keep the financial behemoths under the luxury tax or trading them additional international monies so they can continue to dominate on that level as well. Not a blueprint for becoming competitive in my estimation.

Gotta admit...I don't get it.  If we were saving money, I'd get it.  Forsythe should be gone at the end of the year if not before (August waiver?)  The ONLY thing I can think of is that Dozier just wanted out and the FO granted it.  The prospects that they got back are....young?  I guess.  Hope it works out.  Hope Dozier catches fire.  Hope he wins a world series.

It's interesting that for all the guys that the Twins acquired the last few days there wasn't a single catcher. It seems like getting a AA or AAA catching prospect would have been high on the wish list since we have virtually nothing at either level.

Just shows how valuable they are, and how hard they are to acquire.

To these trades? The Twins have been a losing team all year. Every day since opening day their manager looks like he's just buried his dog, their star 2B has looked bored and his play has echoed it and somehow the team's two "future stars" forgot everything they learned last year.

I can't imagine any catcher in AA or AAA that any of these players could have returned would have been a "prospect". They would have all been Bobby Wilson clones.

Hmmm, I managed to respond to this in the other thread. Sorry!

44 PA in rookie ball, for a college draftee, has zero relevance.

104 wRC+ in A, 129 wRC+ in high-A (what you call "destroyed"?), 119 wRC+ in AA now. Below average walk rate, above average K rate, modest isolated power. Apparently doesn't play CF. Bats lefthanded.

I mean, as a non-40-man guy to fill a minor league roster, he looks great, but it is hard to see a future of value for this guy. Those numbers aren't just going to carry over to MLB.
