nater79a Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 What a punch to the gut... Hard to believe he was having elbow issues with the way he was throwing. Unless it just happened his last outing.
Minnesotatwins005 Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Just saw in Rotoworld that Nick Burdi will undergo Tommy John Surgery and is out for the rest of the year. Talk about a tough break. This came of nowhere since I had heard nothing about him being hurt. Talk about the worst first post ever. Sorry didn't see it was under there he Major League forums. This can definitely be deleted. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/7853/nick-burdi

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Awful news. Best of luck with the surgery and rehab, Nick. But also a reminder of why you don't count on minor league help for your major league team.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Ugh..... This is one reason I would call up RP faster So they can use up service time while on the DL for a year or more?
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Wishing him the best. Also wish that Flavine go out and get some bullpen help for the Twins ASAP...
Minnesotatwins005 Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Unfortunately it seems like now a days almost every pitcher has some type of elbow tear that either leads to TJ or rest like Tanaka did. Kids play baseball year round now a days in the warmer parts of the country play ball year round. The only silver lining is that it seems like every year a higher amount of guys manage to come back and have the same stuff as they did before the surgery after time. This just sucks especially after the missed year last night year from the bone bruise. Wish him the absolute best.
HitInAPinch Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 So, is TJ surgery the new 'right of passage' for Twins MiLB relief pitchers?
drjim Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 So they can use up service time while on the DL for a year or more?Don't want to waste pitcher injuries in the minors.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 So, now here is a question: Under "normal" circumstances, Nick Burdi would have needed to be added to the 40 man roster after this season. Under the rosiest of scenarios, he probably won't be ready to pitch anywhere (to say nothing of the MLB level) until late May 2017. So, let's say the Twins don't add him to the 40 man, which seems logical under the circumstances. Could some other team pick him in the rule 5 draft and hide him on their DL all year? That hardly seems fair. Or are the Twins going to have to protect him on the 40 man and burn an option next season while he recovers and rehabs? That would suck too. Because there is no such thing as a 60 day DL in the minors. That is, a guy on the minor league DL, even if it is all year, remains on the 40 man roster. As I pointed out in a post a few weeks ago, the Twins have precious few spots to waste.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Don't want to waste pitcher injuries in the minors. That nd by calling them up before they are ready, you get Chargois like results while using those bullets. Burdi was hurt (and not very good) for most of the last two seasons. It's sad in that he seemed to have figured out AA this season before this.... Cannot really say that the problem is holding him back.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 This sucks. He missed all of last year and now gets TJ surgery? Gad.

twins_89 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 The Twins bullpen can't catch a break. The front office refuses to add help through free agency and our most attractive minor league options keep getting hurt.
lukeduke1980 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Can this still be terry ryan's fault?
ryn0mite Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 that does seem like an odd loophole. If that were the case, wouldn't the Twins be able to add him to the 40-man, then move him to the 60 day DL where he wouldn't count against the 40-man?
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Too bad. TJ surgery is the worst thing about baseball.

But they would also have to pay him MLB salary and have him acrue MLB service time. Pretty sure the latter is something they want to avoid. That's during the season. As mentioned above, there is no DL in the offseason.
