What a punch to the gut...

Hard to believe he was having elbow issues with the way he was throwing. Unless it just happened his last outing.

Just saw in Rotoworld that Nick Burdi will undergo Tommy John Surgery and is out for the rest of the year. Talk about a tough break. This came of nowhere since I had heard nothing about him being hurt. Talk about the worst first post ever. Sorry didn't see it was under there he Major League forums. This can definitely be deleted.

I've never been a pitcher (well, maybe back when I was 8), but my understanding is often the case is a guy is cruising right along and then there is that "pop" sound.

Awful news.  Best of luck with the surgery and rehab, Nick.

But also a reminder of  why you don't count on minor league help for your major league team.

Unfortunately it seems like now a days almost every pitcher has some type of elbow tear that either leads to TJ or rest like Tanaka did. Kids play baseball year round now a days in the warmer parts of the country play ball year round. The only silver lining is that it seems like every year a higher amount of guys manage to come back and have the same stuff as they did before the surgery after time. This just sucks especially after the missed year last night year from the bone bruise. Wish him the absolute best.

So they can use up service time while on the DL for a year or more?

Don't want to waste pitcher injuries in the minors.

So, now here is a question:

Under "normal" circumstances, Nick Burdi would have needed to be added to the 40 man roster after this season.

Under the rosiest of scenarios, he probably won't be ready to pitch anywhere (to say nothing of the MLB level) until late May 2017.

So, let's say the Twins don't add him to the 40 man, which seems logical under the circumstances.

Could some other team pick him in the rule 5 draft and hide him on their DL all year?  That hardly seems fair.  Or are the Twins going to have to protect him on the 40 man and burn an option next season while he recovers and rehabs?  That would suck too.  Because there is no such thing as a 60 day DL in the minors.  That is, a guy on the minor league DL, even if it is all year, remains on the 40 man roster.  As I pointed out in a post a few weeks ago, the Twins have precious few spots to waste.

That nd by calling them up before they are ready, you get Chargois like results while using those bullets.

Burdi was hurt (and not very good) for most of the last two seasons.  It's sad in that he seemed to have figured out AA this season before this....  Cannot really say that the problem is holding him back.

that does seem like an odd loophole.

The Twins bullpen can't catch a break. The front office refuses to add help through free agency and our most attractive minor league options keep getting hurt.

If that were the case, wouldn't the Twins be able to add him to the 40-man, then move him to the 60 day DL where he wouldn't count against the 40-man?

No DL in the offseason.

Sure. But they would also have to pay him MLB salary and have him acrue MLB service time. Pretty sure the latter is something they want to avoid. That's during the season. As mentioned above, there is no DL in the offseason.
