Tyler Jay is Sh**ing bricks right now.

At least with him, they are golden bricks

Hopefully his injury is already out of the way.

Because it's a theoretical suggestion, not an actual look at the real people that exist in the Twins farm system.

But laughed out of the water seems hyperbolic. I don't think anyone is against guys coming to the majors, if healthy options actually existed.

Guys are healthy, until they aren't.

Aside from that, I got nuthin'

You are (almost) all invited to the Twins Relief Pitcher Pity Party. It will be held in a windowless back room of a Red Lobster, but don't sweat it, the people-watching, were we to actually have windows, would be of those coming and going from a Jo Ann Fabrics across the parking lot here in the city voted Most Depressing City in Minnesota 5 out of the past 6 years. (Do not let the irony escape you).

Admittance will require you to at least jury-rig some other jersey with a masking tape name of any of the following 25 relief pitchers whose promise was at one time greater than it is today:

Nick Burdi, Jake Reed, JT Chargois, Corey Williams, Alex Wimmers, Madison Boer, DJ Baxendale, Hudson Boyd, Luke Bard, Ben Tootle, Randy Rosario, Billy Bullock, Felix Jorge, Matt Bashore, Mason Melotakis, Shooter Hunt, Tyler Jay, Carlos Gutierrez, Zack Jones, Jay Rainville, Cam Booser, Matthew Fox, Mike Cedaroth, Kyle Waldrop, and Glen Perkins.

Potential guests will be hook up to a lie detector and will be required to say that, yes, there has been plenty of of bad luck involved. And duh, you'll need to pass the test.

We will not be serving any of the delicious Red Lobster seafood. Refreshments will consist of a small dixie cup of Concord's Grape Juice and a tasteless sugar cookie to help keep the bad vibe of the party going.

Starting with the 2012 draft the Twins have taken 5 college relievers in the 1st or 2nd round. Now 4 of them (Burdi, Bard, Melotakis, and Chargois) have had major injuries. The pattern doesn't look good for Tyler Jay.

If that were the case, wouldn't the Twins be able to add him to the 40-man, then move him to the 60 day DL where he wouldn't count against the 40-man?

Make sense. Right out of spring, throw him on the 60-day DL for the whole season. Wouldn't even have to option him?

Edit: Well, except for the fact he accrues an entire year of service time?

Yes, he would acrue service time on the MLB DL. Which is likely why the Twins won't do it. They probably would rather burn an option.

Here are several articles linking TJ to velocity and also innings thrown when they are young.  It is one of the big paradoxes of modern baseball.  Throwing in the 90s in high school is almost necessary to be drafted or make it to a major college program.    It is also increases the risks for injuries. According to Burdi's Wikipedia page, he threw 95 in high school.  In Verducci's article there is mention of the innings logged by pitchers selected in the first round.  There is more data today.  In the Hardball Times article there is mention of a study that suggested the Hall of Fame caliber pitchers where more likely to come from the northern part of the U.S. than from the southern part, suggesting the the number of months spent playing baseball during youth was inversely correlated with MLB success (for pitchers).  I have not been able to find that study.

Trevor May was still technical a reliever when he went down...

He's 25, service time is irrelevant. So he could have pitched while healthy. From what I have read online, it is why other teams are calling up RP earlier.

When was he healthy?

Best of luck to him, but I think I pretty much exactly predicted his career path when the Twins announced his selection in the draft. It's the only pick I've ever been strongly against.

It's absolutely possible but with the extremely small sample size we're dealing with here - three or four guys - it's equally as possible it's a result of **** luck.

Top pitching prospects with major injuries in minors, from memory:

Gibson, Wimmers, Romero, Jay, Meyer, Burdi, Chargois, Reed, Stewart, Cederoth, Gonsalves, Thorpe, Bard, Melotakis, one or two Jones. That's a lot.

Now they just draft or sign them with TJ - Graterol, Benninghoff, Curtiss.

You would hope they're doing a thorough review of training and health procedures. That said, although the Twins look bad, most teams want better pitcher health. Cleveland probably would have won last year's World Series if their two best young starters hadn't had season-ending injuries.

I would say it was the plan, not a suggestion. is there a faster route to reaching the big league team than a upperclass college arm breaking into the bullpen? Personally I would love to see a fluid bullpen that is stocked with young arms. A guy like Chargois shouldn't be getting injured at AAA during his age 26 season.

Citing lack of performance in the minors is accurate in some cases, but isn't that an indictment on the draft/development staff? I also agree, injuries have cost some development time, but l can't get over the ages of some of these relief pitchers drafted out of college. Melotakis turns 26 in a couple weeks, Chargois is already 26, barring a 40 man addition and early call up Jake Reed will be 25 when we see him again in September, and depending on recovery time Burdi might not make an appearance until he turns 26 as well. I have a hard time buying that it's just s**t luck for the Charlie Brown Twins which has caused the relief turmoil.

You cannot add a guy in the minors to the 60 day...  and as Chief pointed out, you cannot add a guy to the DL in the offseason.

I did hate those drafts so much. Here we are in almost June, no promotions even within the minors.....

You do realize this is pretty normal, and not just for us?

You'll see a bunch as we get beyond the draft.  Every promotion requires a release above and a promotion below.  It's not as simple as "put Burdi in AAA".

If this is Red Lobster, it's the cheddar baked biscuits... not sure about the tasteless sugar cookie.

Exactly.  No doubt burning an option is the better route to take.

He's already had a pretty significant injury. He's probably not done with them.

Everyone would love to see a fluid bullpen stocked with young arms.

But every single person you mentioned as a possibility got hurt. Every one. And Chargois didn't get hurt in AAA, he got hurt in spring training of a season he was poised to break camp in the bigs.

This is all very unfortunate. Hopefully the new front office can improve. Can't really do worse.

Well, this sucks.  I had thought his "floor" when drafted was supposed to be an elite closer.  Unfortunately shows us what a "floor" truly is for a quick to the majors college player.  You just never know.

I will repeat something my wife has often said over the past few years. "Why don't they have all the pitchers they draft immediately have Tommy John surgery?" That's what they did with the #11 pick last year, maybe he will be an example for all.

The Twins won't have a choice. You can't option an injured player.

The only choice for the Twins will be whether to add him to the 40-man or expose him to Rule 5.

Having TJ surgery once doesn't mean a guy can't blow out his elbow again. I doubt it even makes it less likely.

I wish I could remember more details, but maybe 10 years ago the Mariners had a couple minor league pitchers get hurt. There was a story I read somewhere that suggested it made more sense to not allow them to acrue the service time by optioning them. Granted, that was a couple CBA's ago. And I have only vague recollection of the story.

Sure, it's not as simple as "put Burdi in AAA" -- there's the complicated issue of whether or not to claim Adam Wilk off waivers and thereby put off Burdi's promotion to MLB even longer.

That is a crime to walk inside a Red Lobster and not eat their food! We need to speak with the manager and at least get cheddar bay biscuits delivered to our tables....
