Bollinger: Twins to Interview McLeod

So what exactly do you do here? O, you don't work here? We think you need more responsibility, we're going to put 3 people directly below you....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but President of Baseball Operations is there to ensure continuity and culture when the GM is let go.

As it is, with just a GM, now you have a power vacuum, where someone like Antony may be able to push his way to the top, or make a series of dubious moves.

GM must be held accountable and his removal should not unduly destabilize the organization.

It is a better structure, IMO, and would have avoided the lengthy Ryan bamboozlement of the Pohlads, and even the current embrace of Molitor by the Pohlads.

Well, according to the article, he has an impressive resume and people in the game think he'll be a GM so I guess this is good.  I really have no idea how to pick a GM but he's worn a lot of hats - minor league manager, scouting director and VP - so he probably has some idea of how the baseball part of the operation works.

I'm curious on what he thinks of being saddled with Molitor.  On one hand, it's just one year so maybe he can live with it.  Other than the Molitor/ownership thing, which I think is a real turnoff to candidates, this job should be a really coveted one.  First pick in the draft next year, some room to add payroll, a decent offense already in place, good park, solid minor league system.  I really hope the Twins can hire someone like him.

Am I the only one a little nervous about the idea of a guy who is below the GM level jumping right to the President of Baseball Operations?

McLeod sounds smart. He's from an organization with Epstein/Hoyer, so he's got to have some idea through osmosis or something. But he'd be jumping up several levels. I'd almost rather he jump up to the Twins GM with someone else (maybe a current GM or executive) in the Baseball Operations.

Not I.

My only real concern is his hair. McLeod doesn't have nice hair like Andy McPhail

"Ok, runner on 1st, nobody out, bottom of the 3rd, no score. What do you do"?

"No, seriously, we need to know this stuff"

McLeod: "Well, first you... Wait, are you guys ****ing with me right now?"

Pohlad: *looking up from notepad, pen in hand* "No, this wasn't covered in your media guide. Go on."

McLeod: "Sigh. I really hope you validate parking."

If he's being given credit for all of those excellent Boston/Chicago draft decisions and player development, I'd think the POBO would be a good spot for him, where as perhaps the GM would be more involved with the day-to-day activities of the club.

Also, while it would seem logical that the team would hire the POBO first, I didn't see anything that confirmed that McLeod is actually being interviewed for the POBO gig, perhaps it is for the GM job. I don't think any of us would be surprised to find out this team is going about these hirings bass-ackwards.

Pohlad: "Before you go, we have a ton of these bloody marys left over in the concession stand. We were expecting more people to attend our games! Do you want one for the road?"

Well the report said that the Twins would interview him but it didn't say when or for what position or who else they are interviewing. This is just something that was leaked.  Perhaps the Twins will interview him for both positions to get his feel.  My guess is that Pohlad would want someone like Antony will be POBO and someone like Mcleod would be GM.  But I'm also not sure how the duties/power between the two positions would differ.

So Jason, here are some of the things that we need to get better at:

1.) Scouting;

2.) Talent Development;

3.) Keeping infielders in the infield and outfielders in the outfield.

4.) Keeping starters starting, and relievers relieving.

5.) Handling foreign players.

6.) Drafting.

7.) Bunting.

[this goes on for quite some time]

Connor MacCloud (Jason McLeod): I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal.....and you have your checkbook here, right?

This is certainly good news that he's interviewing and there generally seems to be a euphoria on this board about it. Personally, I'm going to temper my enthusiasm to the fact that a qualified candidate is interviewing. Ld be interested in who wlse is on the list. Also, in my experience in these situations, the favorite isn't always the one hired or the best candidate. This is a good start and I'll choose to let the process evolve, albeit hopefully by the end of the season if possible.

No offense, but I would like to throw your guess in a trunk, secure it with a padlock and toss it in the river.

More of a Duncan MacLeod fan myself.

'I am Duncan MacLeod, born four hundred years ago in the Highlands of Scotland. I am Immortal and I am not alone. For centuries we have waited for the time of the Gathering, when the stroke of a sword and the fall of a head will release the power of the Quickening. In the end, there can be only one.'

Or, as he would sometimes say,  'I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod, and you are dead'

You have to hope that, after Alex Anthopoulos, no more candidates whose names are leaked pull out early, or this could start looking like hiring a coach for Gophers basketball.

That doesn't seem to be enough. Any watcher of horror flicks, and the last years of TwinsWorld have been a horror, knows about the hand that comes up out of the water. They never stay down. I would opt more for the wood chipper in Fargo! :).

Maybe there'll be a new sheriff in town.

Hilarious!  I'm crying with laughter.  Thank you!

"Are you now or have you ever been lovable? If not, what could you do to become lovable? Without getting sued, of course."

"Besides being lovable, the most important thing is loyalty. Have you ever had an employee who was loyal but not good at his job? How did you handle it without making other people worry that you wouldn't be loyal to them if they didn't do their jobs well?"

"When things aren't going as well as you said they would, how do you decide which lower-level employee to blame?"

"Tell me about some of the inscrutable ways you've communicated that someone was injured or things weren't going very well."

"How does the media help you motivate injured players?"

"When you're mathematically eliminated and trying to assess the future, what is the right number of minor league veterans and impending free agents who should get regular playing time?"

"How many veterans with limited remaining baseball skills are necessary to have a great clubhouse atmosphere?"

"Two-part question. First, please tell me your favorite ways to communicate that things will be better in the future. Second, explain how you can keep those messages going for multiple years."

"Have you ever fired anyone when firing that person wasn't obvious to everyone?"

"When you fire someone who is higher up in the organization, is anything more important than telling the world how great the person is and offering the person another job, doing whatever he wants?"

"How many minor league free agents need to attest to your honor in order for your image to remain clean when you publicly rip rookies transitioning to the majors?"

"What is the optimum number of new positions someone should play in the majors?"

"What do you think about OBP, WHIP and these other new types of statistics?"[/quote

**not sure whether to laugh or cry**

This thread has been fantastic, a perfect pre-game upper to offset the inevitable in-game downer.
