Yennier Cano has become a key bullpen arm for the Orioles. What magic are they able to work, first with Jorge Lopez, now with Cano and Danny Coulombe.

8 2/3 innings so far, he hasn't allowed a hit OR walk yet, while striking out 10. Damn impressive.

Maggi is going to get in the game for Pittsburgh tonight. They're up 8-0 in the 8th and the bench coach just told him to get ready. Congratulations to a baseball lifer.

Maggi received a standing ovation when he came out, could've been our moment!* Not giving Maggi a taste of his cup of coffee is maybe my biggest beef with Rocco. I went to a lot of Saints games that year and he was really good. Wanted to see him get that with us.

*And if we had let him play in 2021 like we should have, he wouldn't have been dinged by the pitch clock for basking in the moment.

I didn't like what happened to Maggi, but circumstances were different. The Twins didn't have a "safe" lead, but they also had less than a remote chance to make the playoffs and they were on the road. Maggi might not last much longer in Pittsburgh, but he got his one at-bat (equal to Walter Alston, one more than "Moonlight" Graham) at least.

I think it is very clear that Baltimore has some very good bullpen and pitcher coaches,  along with analytics,  that are harnessing elite pitchers with control issues.   This is a trade that has worked out for the Twins,  but I am becoming very impressed with what the Orioles are doing.

After Cano came over last year, he got blasted as an Oriole, but they must have found something. The thing is that Cano isn't some early 20s youngster, I believe he's 29 and for elite command to be unlocked at that age is near miraculous.

They have now done it twice, they did it with Jorge last year.   Sometimes you can say it was just luck.  They have now done this in back to back years.  We are getting out of the territory of luck and going in to they are doing something systematically different that is helping these types of pitchers.  Hard throwers with control issues.

Rooker took Ohtani deep in the A's game today. 7 HRs in 18 games; 18 RBIs.

.300/ .481 /.800

Go A's.

Amazing early run for Rooker. Sure, plenty of homers, but his OBP is impressive too. His performance is a rare ray of light for Oakland this year.

I like seeing 'our' guys succeed elsewhere. There was no room here for Rooker here, but I'm really happy for him that something 'clicked' and I hope it carries through the season and he has a good career.

Kyle Gibson is having a nice start, too. Can't figure out how to do the tables' pasting. But the above was a great game, and he is 4-0 with a 3.93 ERA in 34.1 innings. 3 really good starts and 3 not so good, The next start he had 102 pitches in 4.1 innings.

Yes, Cano has looked great so far this year. But as someone else posted earlier in the week, he turns 29 this year, so he's not the hot young prospect I had assumed he was at the time of the trade. Nevertheless, I'm sure the Orioles are happy to have him in their bullpen.

You make room when a guy is crushing it the way Rooker is now.  Who knows what level he sustains but his OPS is 300 points higher than Buxton.  We have quite a few guys presently and going forward that can cover a lot of defensive positions.  He would look really good as a DH on this team.

Rooker wasn’t playing like that over a year ago when he was traded. And he didn’t produce like that last year. So there was ‘no making room for him’ because this isn’t what he was here. That wasn’t even my point, My point was I’m happy for him. While no, what he’s doing now isn’t likely sustainable, but I do hope he’s unlocked something and it leads to a good career for him. Guess others can’t be so magnanimous about it.

We did not hold on to him long enough to determine what he could do.  He had a total of 267 PAs while with the twins and lots of people here had the pitchforks out at 150 ABs.  He has a grand total of 352.  He might end up to be great or mediocre but why should we feel good about dumping a guy who is absolutely crushing it.  He still has a milb option left and he could have been kept on the 40 man.

Still don’t get why it’s so difficult to just be happy for him

Sergio Romo is scheduled in the Giants radio booth in Mexico Series against the Padres, KNBR.  Expect just one of those "during inning" interviews.

11 HRs in yesterday's game. Lamont Wade, SF, (.245) homered off Darvish as the first batter of the game.

Nelson Cruz, SD, (.317) tripled to deep center in the 2nd.

The issue is we gave up on him,  San Diego gave up on him,  a team that could have really utilized him this year Kansas City gave up on him.  He looked like AAAA prospect.   To me some things are up for fair discussion.  Questioning the trade for Mahle or a few other minor things.  2.  This is still in the extremely small sample size.  I hope something clicked for him,  but we are still well within Akil Baddoo territory.   I do think he has more talent than Baddo but I think its more likely his strikeouts begin to increase again and overall production will decrease.  There is nothing wrong with be happy for his success.

Smeltzer DFAed after pitching long relief last night and another former Twin, Chi Chi Gonzalez, had his contract selected to take Smeltzer's place on the active roster.

Hey, maybe Miami can pick up Gary Sanchez too! Go ahead and give them all of our old castoffs, and why not Miguel Sano too? On the good side of things for Miami, our old pal Arreaz is still batting over .400.

It's still very early in the season, but Rooker hasn't cooled off yet. Looks like he may end up being the sole representative for Oakland in the All-Star game.

16 innings now, 0.00 ERA and 0 BBs. I was high on him as a prospect, and now he seems to be panning out. At least they got Lopez in the trade and didn’t DFA him, but it’s not a great look if he ends up being an effective high leverage reliever for them.

Is it accurate to say they "dumped" him though? They traded him for other assets.

Then SD traded him. Then KC dumped him.

If the Twins had resigned him again in the offseason all the commentary would have been "getting the band back together/we have too many corner outfielders already."

Nobody is saying they're happy that Rooker isn't a Twin. They're saying they're happy that his career seems to finally be working out for him. It's a tough business.

If you're mad, imagine how they must feel in KC.

The Twins needed to add him to the roster or risk losing him. Trading him and making him San Diegos problem was the good move, at the time, with an abundance of outfielders...supposedly.
