In a surprising move, the Orioles sent Tyler Wells all the way down to AA for "a little bit of a break", according to manager Brandon Hyde. The article I read also cited his "uncharacteristic" recent outings, plus the number of innings he has pitched this year (113-plus so far, as opposed to last season when he threw 106 innings (combining his stints in the majors and minors). Not sure what sort of "break" he is going to get in AA, but I hope he can return to the Orioles soon.

Meanwhile, the Orioles won yesterday, defeating the evil Yankees, closing out the game with 2 scoreless and hitless innings from our old buddies Danny Coulombe and Yennier Yano.

Smiley Lynn to the Dodgers (was in Mille Lacs this weekend and didn't see till this morning).
Know the Dodgers need help but not sure I want Lynn in my clubhouse. Call him the "Dodger Downer" now.
Let's see. 6 teams in 9 years. What does that say? (Cards, Twins, Yanks, Rangers, WSox, Dodgers)

Unsung heroes Sosa, Cave carry Philly to massive series win

Baltimore had a runner on second with two outs in the sixth, when Ramón Urías ripped a ball to left field. Cave ran almost 60 feet toward the left-field wall. He jumped to make an over-the-shoulder catch, slamming into the wall and tumbling backward.

He held onto the ball.

Cave looked up at the fans in the first row. He yelled at them, then tossed them the ball.

Rays are trying Zack Littell as a starter.

Didn't see that coming.

I didn't either. Not sure how long that experiment will last. Bradley started off great for the Rays but has had some rough starts the past month, so he's due for a re-set in AAA.  I'm sure that the just-acquired  Civale will get put in their rotation ASAP. If they are starting Littell, I would think it's only a one time thing. Then again, if he somehow lasts a few innings and isn't shelled, who knows? The Rays tend to think outside the box more often than not.

Picking up that service time one day at a time.

And the Marlins DFA'd Smeltzer again yesterday.

Well, I spoke too soon. They Rays have now used Littell as a proper starter twice, and in the game on Friday he pitched 6 shutout innings and only gave up 3 hits and 1 walk. Only struck out 1 batter, but all in all a good performance. That game the Rays won easily, but they lost yesterday to the Tigers and a Baddoo home run.

Meanwhile, over in Baltimore it looked like Twins Appreciation Day, with Gibson

I heard on radio that it was Gibby's 100th win.

Ben Rortvedt is back from injuries. Had game on radio and he threw out a runner attempting to swipe 2nd. Announcer said, "He got him, throwing before he even fully got up from the crouch."

His slash line? No typo. Not sure how injuries are coloring it.

Rortvedt will probably never be much of a hitter, but he seems to be a solid catcher. Nevertheless, it's cool to see him healthy again and playing in the big leagues, even if he's starting games for those evil Yankees.

My only fear will be that Kirilloff gets packaged this Winter and I will have to remember how to spell his name, Rortvedt, and Hildenberger.

Have the Reds-Marlins game on.

Arraez playing second, (.369), and Steer and Encarnacion-Strand just hit back to back HRs.

Reds booth was talking about Steer for rook of the yr.

Lopez on in the 7th in relief.

He also just hit the 10 year service time milestone. Congrats to Gibby!

Watched a freebee on MLB-TV. Gibby wasn't messing around like he used to. He seemed more confident on the mound.

For those wondering on Cano - the past month he has a 2.84 ERA, 9 K/9 rate, but he is giving up a few more walks and hits than before. Still a very good reliever.

Jorge Lopez, meanwhile, has given up 3 runs in 5 innings with a fourth run unearned - 8 hits in that stretch. Flipping him for Floro seems to be a win so far.

Just from looking at the box scores, it seems like Gibson is striking out more batters this year too. Where did that come from?

The Cat with 5 lives:

Have Rangers-A's game on. Who is hitting DH for Rangers? Robbie Grossman. Stands a chance of getting his ring.

Gotta give Grossman credit for hanging in there and still being a useful player.

Another big game for Eddie Rosario in Atlanta, going 3 for 5 with a homer and 4 RBI. However, overall, his season has been pretty mediocre, now batting .249 with an OBP of .296
