Lewis Thorpe will be recalled to start Wednesday, Nick Vincent DFA'd

Lewis Thorpe will be recalled to start Wednesday August 18 vs Cleveland.

Thorpe made 3 spot starts for the Twins earlier this season. He then spent over 2 months on the AAA injured list with a shoulder strain, but recently returned to make a 5.2 IP start for St. Paul, allowing only 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and 5 K's on 78 pitches.

EDIT TO ADD: The corresponding roster move is that reliever Nick Vincent has been designated for assignment. This also opens a 40-man roster spot, which could be filled by someone else in the near future.

What a shock! ?

I'm fine with him coming back up, but wish it were in the pen and someone else starting.

Regardless, good luck to him.  Hopefully he can continue the good streak they're on.

Not surprising and they need to know what he can and cannot do and what he is or is not.  Right now I am so low on him I have him off the 40 man next year.  Hopefully he proves me wrong but the velocity hasn't been there and K's haven't been there and the HR ball has been a problem for him so I guess we will see if he puts it all together or not.  Best to find out for sure before giving up on him.

They're somewhat limited on who they can call up to start though, which leaves pretty much... Thorpe. Also, given the limited number of LH armed starters, I think he'll be given a much longer leash than many others.

I don't disagree though, that his ultimate destination is most likely the bullpen.  Not because he is the "failed starter" type, but rather I just have a feeling that he fits better there.

His Ks definitely are not good, but his bottom line has been fine.  Carlos Silva ended up with a 130 ERA+ one year even with his terrible K rate, so I wouldn't toss anybody out because of a poor K rate if the bottom line is working out, especially when the team can barely field a pitching staff.

I like that the younger pitchers are being given a chance.  I also like that they have done a solid job is far.  Credit development teams for that.

I figured Nick was here for a veteran presence.  I guess it was just to give him a showcase so another team can get him.  He did his job here.  That was fast.

I am pleasantly surprised to see they decided to move on from Vincent so quickly -- I guess he really just was a very temporary fill-in. Perhaps Jovani Moran will take Vincent's 40-man spot soon.

They could also put Luke Farrell and Derek Law on the 60 day IL and open up 2 more spots. Hopefully for Moran and Miranda, at the very least.

I believe Dobnak and Smeltzer are both working their way back from the 60-day in the next couple weeks. I wouldn't mind seeing Smeltzer DFA'd, but my guess would be the Twins don't plan to cut him loose as soon as he comes off the IL. I'd prefer to see Moran and Miranda getting some ML time, but my guess is the Twins would fill Farrell and Law's 40-man spots with Dobnak and Smeltzer first. I also believe Farrell has started throwing bullpen sessions on his way back so I don't know that they'd be looking to send him to the 60-day at this time.

I don't know what Garlick, Stashak, and Colina are looking at in terms of getting off the 60-day this season, but the only one I've seen is for sure not coming back is Kirilloff. That means they're looking at 2-5 guys on the 60-day that will need to be added back to the 40-man or DFA'd in the coming weeks to month. Although, I think Rogers is a relatively easy add to the 60 day. Not sure why they'd bring him back for just a couple weeks this season.

I would venture a guess that Rogers gets added to the 60 Day just as soon as they need to add another player who isn't on the 40 man, but hard to say in my uneducated knowledge pool.

Also, I thought I read that Garlick had the Hernia surgery after all and wasn't expected back this season but I can't remember where I saw that (MLBTR perhaps?).

That could be, I just don't remember hearing anything about Garlick lately so couldn't remember what his deal is. And, agreed, I think Rogers goes on the 60 day if/when they need to add someone.

I go out to fertilize the yard and it’s tied

It could be said the the Twins "fertilized their yard" in the early innings of today's game, and are now harvesting their fruit by taking the lead.

Great seeing Thorpe apparently healthy and getting a chance to start for the Twins.  His career was so bright a couple years ago when he had that nice run in the later part of the season.  When was that, 2019?  Has been nothing but various problems since, including a fastball under 90.

Hopefully, he will attack the strike zone tonight with a 91-92mph fastball with an umpire who doesn't squeeze his strike zone with his breaking stuff.  Would love to see this young man blossom with the Twins the next six weeks and not with Oakland, or whomever, in 2023.  Plus, the Twins need a good start tonight to keep their streak of winning series alive!

If I heard correctly he left the game early with a shoulder injury.

Thorpe needed one more start in St. Paul. Thus this became a bullpen game, and we have another tomorrow with Gant as the starter who can maybe go 4-5. I would've started Gant today. And, like others, I see Thorpe as a hopeful lefty long-man out of the pen. Decision time.

Gant isn't a starter, and should be treated as a RP. There is no reason Thorpe should have started that game, if he's healthy enough to start in the minors.
