Making Room for Donaldson

Lots of discussion about signing of Donaldson(and rightly so  :) ).

But a small, side track thought that I figured I'd throw out for discussion:

Who gets waived/traded off of 40 man roster to make room for him?

I have no idea, but I would think that the longer it takes for the team to make an 'official' announcement the more likely that a trade is in the works.

Thoughts?

It’ll probably be Ryne Harper. BUT, I could see a trade (small or large) that would let go a more significant piece.

I agree it's probably Harper. We cut him and we don't lose anything. Only way I'm moving a piece at this point is if there's a SP coming the other way.

I would guess Harper too.  There might be a minor league deal with him to come back since there will be Hill and Pineda going to the 60 day DL and suspended lists.

On their off the record GATG podcast, John Bonnes hinted at one that he wouldn't be very happy about. I'm guessing that's Lamonte Wade Jr.

I hope not, but he's pretty redundant (So is Ryne Harper though)

Actually, the Twins have to remove 2 people from their roster. They have not announced the signings of Bailey and Hill yet, and they only have one empty roster spot before adding them. So with the addition of Donaldson, they will need to remove 2 players from the roster. I would expect that a trade of some kind is in the works, if only to remove someone Adrianza or Nick Gordon as well as Harper.

I can't see them giving up on Wisler before giving him a chance. The only other candidate could be Sean Poppen. I doubt he clears waivers, thought.

I would anticipate that the Twins were in some form of trade talks to reduce their roster is the reason that the signings of Bailey and Hill have not been announced. Or a health issue on a physical.

According to MLB trade rumors both players are signed already. so they are already on the 40 man.

"the Twins faced some long weeks of rumors and missed targets before eventually landing a pair of veterans.  Homer Bailey and Rich Hill each signed one-year contracts with Minnesota on the same day, with Bailey earning $7MM in guaranteed money and Hill pulling in $3MM guaranteed (with hefty incentives).  Bailey got his career on track with a solid 2019 season following multiple rough years with the Reds, while Hill isn’t going to be able to pitch until midseason due to his recovery from primary revision surgery."

When Pineda comes back they will need to create another spot.  They so also need a spot for Donaldson.

This is incorrect, Hill and Bailey have been added. They had one open spot before that, plus Pineda was shifted to the ineligible list for the other spot.

Personally I would get rid of Wisler as he is a player they have to keep on the 25 man so if he struggles they will have to release him as they can not send him down.  I know everyone is down on Harper but his numbers are not as bad as a lot of relievers on other teams which is likely why the Twins have kept him as long as they have.

Granted I get nervous when he pitches and don't love him in the pen but hopefully they can get something for him rather than just dumping him. He still has options so can go up and down if his stuff does back up and for context his numbers were better than Wislers last year.  I guess we will know what they decide in the next week or so.

Both Hill and Bailey are listed on roster on MLB.com.

But I also count 41 names on their roster.

So take that for what it is worth.

Pineda is already on the ineligible list -- that list is available in the offseason, unliked injured lists.

But you are correct that Hill can go on the 60-day IL as soon as pitchers and catchers report, and that could open a spot for someone too.

Pineda is the 41st guy right now, because he's on the restricted list and thus doesn't count toward the 40-man.

Ooh, I hope not. I was thinking maybe he was talking about Nick Gordon. Wouldn't be happy with either of those moves.

I think Gordon would be the most likely trade candidate.

I'd guess it has to be Harper. He barely made the team as a non-roster guy last spring, got demoted in August, didn't make the playoff roster, and will turn 31 years old around opening day.

But he could easily come back as a non-roster guy again this spring, maybe even making the team while Hill goes to the 60-day IL.

You have to look at the 25-man. Gonzalez and Adrianza are now infielders. Avilla is the backup catcher. With 13 pitchers, you have one more spot. Backup outfielder (or is that Gonzalez) or Astulido. Cave or Wade could be on the bubble. Of course, picthing wise, Harper seems the logical candidate. Poppen coming off an ijury may not be claimed, but he is a potential body for starter depth, compared to Harper, who could easily be signed on again as a minor league invite if no one else adds him to the 40-man. Right now, rosters seem pretty set for teams as players are being jettisoned asthey add free agents acorss the board.

The Twins gain a spot when Hill goes on the 60-day after spring training. But two names have to come off as the season progresses.

As much as everyone likes him, I could see Astudillo as a candidate, particularly if the Donaldson signing signals a renewed interest in improved defense. There is some benefit to finding a 3rd catcher to stick in Rochester that does not need to be rostered as well.

But I'd suspect the first choice is to swing a trade, with the second choice being Harper.

Are Cave and Wade out of options? I never know where to find that information on a free website. If they are, I could see one of them (likely Wade) as a potential DFA candidate if there isn't a trade in the works. We only have one spot available for a reserve OF on the 26 man roster after adding Donaldson. Also means Astudillo starts in the minors as the 27th or 28th man, depending on where you "rank" the pitchers. I agree that its time to trade prospects and consolidate by trading quantity for quality but that's a lot easier to say than it is to do.

First choice is a trade that frees up a 40 man spot. Second is bye bye Wade. Cave is better, Astudillo has options.

There is a column in this table for that. This is a great tool....

The Twins have a lot of pitchers on their 40-man, I would think it should be a pitcher who is DFAed. With the two free-agent righties added, I think Harper is the best choice. While the position player roster looks nearly full right now, injuries always happen. The beauty of having both Gonzalez, Austudillo and Adrianza around is their real versatility. Every position except for center field is covered by this trio and Adrianza and Gonzalez are probably better fielders than the starters at most positions.

Adrianza should and will not be removed from the 40 man roster. He is a huge part of this team. Every contending team needs a guy like this. He plays every infield position and takes tough at bats. I'm a huge fan of his. Seriously, the value this guy has to the team is rather large.

I'd rather trade one of our higher end position players than Doran, but I assume Colorado will want an eventual "replacement" for Gray.

I was thinking the Rockies would want Rosario in that deal......

Fine.

I would think once they trade Gray and Arenado they'd be in full rebuild mode and wouldn't want Rosario, but I'd be fine including him (but I'm not including Wade Jr then).

Also, Rosario's defense would be really ugly at that big field.

Not to mention the superior defender at both SS and 2B. Yeah, removing or trading him? Big mistake, imo
