The Twins look to come back after falling to our rival Milwaukee last night following a two run blast from Orlando Arcia off of Twins' legend Taylor Rogers. We will also be starting a rookie pitcher who is making his MLB debut in Devin Smeltzer, while the Brewers bring out Zach Davies. Let's hope we can split the series against our boarder rivals. 

 

The Pitchers:

Devin Smeltzer (3-2, 1.15 ERA, 48 K's in 54.2 MiLB innings) vs Zach Davies (5-0, 2.43 ERA, 38 K's)

 

The Twins placed last nights starter Michael Pineda on the injured list today with an injury to his right knee, and purchased the contract of left hander Devin Smeltzer. Smeltzer was acquired in the Brian Dozier trade season, and the fact that one of the players involved in the deal has already reached the majors is a major win. Dozier has been horrible for the Nationals. Smeltzer is a soft-tossing lefty who relies on a fastball, curveball, changeup repertoire. I am guessing the Twins are hoping to piggy-back Zack Littell with the left hander. Zach Davies is having a career year for the Brew Crew, with the 2nd best ERA in the MLB. Davies is getting very lucky, only striking out 6.1 batter per 9. His FIP sits over 4, and I expect some negative regression from Davies tonight.

The Twins are rolling with what would be their best hitting lineup of all the active players right now. Willians Astudillo hasn't been hitting the ball well at all, and Nelson Cruz and Mitch Garver are not active yet. Max Kepler is your AL player of the week after hitting 3 homers and 10 RBI's in this past week. That extension looks great right now. No Twins has more than 5 at-bats against Zach Davies, and no Brewer has ever stepped in the batters box against Devin Smeltzer in an MLB game (obviously!). The Brewers only have two lefties in the lineup, one of which is your NL MVP right now. Smeltzer is dominant against lefties, but isn't quite as good against righties. It will be interesting to see how often the changeup is used against one of the best lineups in the MLB. 

 

Mill's Moments

1. Great Job Front Office

I don't believe the Michael Pineda is injured at all. I don't know the ins and outs of how the injured list works. I don't know if an MLB official comes in and actually checks to see if someone is injured, but I think Pineda is healthy. He pitched just fine last night, and it makes sense to send him on the injured list. The Twins have two off days over the next ten, and won't need a 5th starter until June 8th. Pineda is eligible to be activated the 7th of June. Coincidence? I think not. The Twins will more than likely send Smeltzer down after tonight outing, and then active Nelson Cruz if he is ready. If he isn't ready, Mitch Garver will hopefully be. If neither are ready I believe a reliever will come up. This is a fantastic job by the front office. 

2. Ryne Rising

When Ryne Harper made the team out of spring training I wasn't sure what to expect. He pitched very well in spring training, but it is just that. Training. You aren't facing the heart of an order, but he did just that last night, for the MLB's best team, in a one run game, and did a fine job. Harper isn't going to be a closer or a setup man, but I believe he has firmly earned his spot right in the middle of that Twins bullpen. The front office has done very well with minor league free agent relievers the past two years in Ryne Harper and Matt Magill. If the Twins add another high leverage reliever or two, you will be just fine with Harper, Duffey, and Magill at the front end of your bullpen.

Pick to Click: Jorge Polanco is either going yard, or having a 3 hit game. Maybe both.

From my eye test, Astudillo is no longer getting great pitches to swing at, and his reputation of "never strike out/never walk" means he is swinging at and making contact with a lot of crappy pitches, leading to lazy pop-flies and slow grounders. He needs to ignore the headlines about himself and start being a little more selective at the plate.

The news about Garver almost being ready to go is super exciting. Injecting a rested Cruz and healthy Garver into this line up is almost unfair.

So..... are they just wanting to add 2/3 days rest for all the starters? Is Perez hurt? Needs a couple days? They all need a couple days? With a day off on Wednesday, this really changes the "rotatation" rest schedule.... for all of the starters. They were already going to get an extra day......

I think it is about rest, yes. We are learning how important rest and recovery is to athletes (sleep is key, btw).....and I think the Twins are embracing this. You can, I think, see it in the day to day lineups.

Going against the Brewers without a full force starter that is up and in rotation, seems misquided to me. If they had won last night, maybe I feel better about it. This is the type of team you need to beat, a contender. Even with the "hitting" lineup, it feels like Baldelli and company aren't concerned about the momentum here. The best we can do is get out with a tie in this short series. We certainly don't need to give the Brewers and advantage. Good luck to the soft tossing rookie.... he will need it.

Meh. I don't agree, I'd rather they play the long game. They don't need to beat the Brewers to prove anything to anyone. But, I guess both of our posts are opinions, not facts.....and the "truth" may be in the middle. Who knows? Not me. I'm just a rando poster....
