I'm going to keep my expectations low, but hope for the best. I'm happy/surprised the FO is giving him a shot so soon.

Let's hope he has a nice debut.  We shouldn't expect miracles from the kid, there is a good chance he isn't as dominating as we all would like to dream.  So I hope no one is unfair in what they expect from him.

The real miracle is that we don't have to suffer through Phil Hughes again....for now.

. I don’t know about that. That Blyleven kid did pretty well in his rookie year.

Blyleven was a once-in-a-generation talent. He should have been a first ballot HOFer. When he retired he was third all-time in strikeouts. BLEEPING THIRD! It would be like voting down the third all-time home run hitter just because he played on losing teams. A travesty.

. Agreed. As a 9th grader I watched Blyleven's first game on TV. Lee Maye hit the first pitch (?) Blyleven threw for a HR. He settled down and pitched 7 innings, gave up 5 hits, no more runs, walked 1, and struck out 7. Ron Perranoski came in and pitched a two inning save (that was a time when it was a very routine thing for a professional relief pitcher to do).

About time, do not know why Twins just do not cut bait with Hughes, injuries derailed his career.

Every player's career ends at some point. I hold no negative thoughts about Phil Hughes but the time appears to have come.

I was at Steve Carlton's last major league game in 1988. He made an unsuccessful appearance out of the bullpen and when he was pulled I stood up and applauded and yelled, "Great career, Lefty!" His 1972 season is considered by many to be the best season ever by a starting pitcher. He was 27-10 with a 1.97 ERA for a team that went 59-97.

So I should definitely hold off on starting the "I'm done with Fernando Romero" thread?

Great news!

Now we get to go from playing Hide-and-ghost-seek with Tyler Kinley to hid-and-ghost-seek Phil Hughes

Better than pretending he's good to go starting once every 5 games!

I really thought it would take at least 2-3 more poor starts (or even more if Hughes managed a semi-decent start) before the Twins would give up on Hughes as a starter. I'm also surprised that Romero is getting a chance, I figured we'd have to cycle through Sledgers and Enns (and Mejia if healthy) before Romero/Gonsalves would get a shot.

My guess as to the conversation leading up to the decision:

Molly: Boy Thad, we gotta do something about these short starts! Phil is killing my bullpen.

Levine into the intercom: Hi Dorris, send in Mr Hughes please.

Hughes: hi Thad, hi Molly, what’s up?

Levine: We can’t help but notice that your struggling to get out of the 4th inning Phil. Are you hurt?

Hughes: nope! Fit as a fiddle

Levine: are you sure?

Hughes: positive!

Levine cocks an eyebrow

Hughes: I’m fine! Really!

Molly: ok then we gotta put you in the pen.

Levine: thanks Phil, see you later, go get ‘em

Levine: Dorris, please get me Mike Quade. Paul, when Lance hits 110 pitches in the 5th, please send out one of (player x) and (player y). One of those two are going back to Rochester tomorrow.

The Twins have announced that Fernando Romero will start on Wednesday with Phil Hughes going to the bullpen.

Wow!!

yeah that's aggressive i like it!

I hope he pitches well. At the least this should give Romero a shot in the arm to improve his command and control. He sounds close, I think his command on his fastball is good, however he’s got to tighten up command on his slider (a pitch that when it’s on he is virtually unhittable), and his change is looking far better than last year.

I just hope regardless of the outcome tomorrow Romero’s start in the bigs motivates him to be much better.

I'd rather see Enns or Enlow.

I'd rather see Misael Urbina pitch.

Seriously though, it would be nice if he could stay up for the entire season. We need a booster shot in the butt-cheek. Ervin will give us a shot in the other butt-cheek when he returns. .500 here we come!

I'm excited to see Romero and endorse the move, but is he going to help the short-start situation? Isn't he the one prospect who's innings and pitch counts are most closely going to be monitored?

I guess I don't understand this thought process....since there is zero actual evidence that increasing his innings and pitch counts would hurt him. Zero. Doesn't mean they won't.....

I'm just fine letting him go as deep into a game as his production allows.

That just doesn't seem to happen with young guys too often; Molitor, like many mangers tend to pull rookies instead of letting them try to work out of jams, especially if their jobs may be on the line as well. And if Molitor needed more incentive to routinely yank him after five innings, didn't we already hear someone from the front office talk this spring about managing Romero's workload?

Although, going five innings would still be an improvement.
