If not Molitor, then who?

Doogie just said that there have been no contract talks between Molitor and Jim Pohlad or the front office.  As his current contract is up at season's end, and we're already into August, this makes things pretty clear.

 

So if Molitor is indeed not retained, who would you want to see at the helm?

I've always wanted to get an outside hire for manager because I wanted to get away from the feeling that things must always be done the same. Now that we have Falvey and Lavine here, I've softened on that stance. I think Gene Glynn might be a good manager here or elsewhere. I'm sure others here like Doug Mientkiewicz and Jake Mauer. Even with no managerial experience, I have to think the new guys have some plan for Jeff Pickler.

 

I'd be curious about any of those guys, though I'd still prefer an outside man (or woman!).

 

If we're going outside the organization I know Sandy Alomar Jr has been mentioned on this site several times before, like Falvey, he's a Cleveland guy. I wonder if Michael Callaway, Cleveland's pitching coach is on the radar. He seems to be regarded well, though I don't know if it's substantive or if it's because he lucked his way into good pitchers.

I don't know if he's the best guy but I'd think Gene Glynn is probably a favorite internally. Evidently Levine has sung his praises for his infield work with Polanco and Sano. Suggests maybe he'd be one to emphasize fundamentals, which if true would be welcome IMO. He obviously has experience managing too. No idea where he is at with analytics.

I like the idea of Dougie Baseball but Picker, Glynn, Mauer would all be ok with me. But I don't know enough about other options. Someone in the Rangers system could be fine. Mostly, I'm gonna give Levine the benefit of the doubt on his hire since it's his first one and he's seen what the team needs. If he thinks Glynn is the guy, great. If he thinks he needs the Rangers AAA manager, fine.

I agree with most of this. I'm not die-hard on needing managerial experience at this point though. Mike Matheny, AJ Hinch, Brad Ausmus, Craig Counsel, and Kevin Cash come to mind as guys who hadn't managed before getting their first hire and I'm guessing there are lots that only have coaching experience, some probably minimal.

 

Molitor might give off the impression that it's best to have experience; so I guess I'd say I'd be open to a guy who doesn't have managerial experience as long as he played or worked in the front office during the game's modern era.

Levine definitely sang the praises of Glynn! It's interesting. From what I've been able to piece together, Glynn was the runner-up when the Twins hired Paul Molitor. I believe Torey Lovullo was 3rd and Mientkiewicz fourth.

This will probably depend on how the Nationals perform in the playoffs, but Dusty Baker is also a lame-duck manager right now. If they decide not to extend him, I'd be open to bringing him in. He has a good track-record of shepherding young cores to (at least regular season) success.

It depends if the team is TRULY in rebuilding mode. You want someone who will work well with the system already in place and the guys in the minors. Of course, most of that talent is still a season away. But if you look at the talent that will probably stay on the roster, most of those guys have played in the system for BOTH Mauer and Dougie M. 

 

I don't think there is a quick fix that throwing money at and bringing in a hardass from outside that will suddenly make the Twins major contenders at this point.

 

But NOW is the time we will see exactly where the new regime expects the Twins to be next year and down the road.

 

And I also wonder how the new front office will be dealing with other lifers...like TK and Hrbek and Oliva and all. Sure, former players always serve honorary positions in an organization, but will even Cuddyer and Hunter and Hawkins remain in the mix, or was that a semi-p.r. move for this season only.

 

The Twins are going to be a tough sell, no matter how they end 2017. Super Bowl fever is going to wash them from the media in town.

 

Not sure what that will say to budget, seating prices and the ilk. Not sure what to expect, except that a lot of new names will be in the various front office arenas (scouting, minor leagues, player services).

 

I'm sure the job will be open to applications. If Dougie doesn't get it, or at least a major laague caching offer, I hope he takes his talents elsewhere. Mauer might play the game card a bit more, with hopes of at least being a coach someday.

Someone mentioned Alomar on Twitter yesterday and I think he's the likely choice.
