I am glad the Meija demotion happened sooner rather than later. Completely aside from his pitching, he has no mound presence and is not finishing in a fielding position. These are things he can work on and think about in AAA.

So are Hughes and Gibson "on alert," now?

Welcome back Jose, hopefully they let you stay this time.

Mejia definitely made his case for being the first pitcher dropped but if this isn't the first quick hook on a list of them then there is a problem.

I actually see promise in Mejia. It's just fine that he goes to AAA to work out the kinks. He will be ready to replace Gibson in a month. Welcome Vargas and Berrios.

How fun is the speculation and how full will the postings be if Vargas and Berrios are not on the roster.  Please give us more.  Make the large scale shifts we need if we have any hope going forward.

Idk about you but I'm ready to grab my pitchfork if one of Vargas/Park and Berrios aren't up at the end of the month.

It looks like they'll be calling up a reliever as they don't need a 5th starter until May 6th. It would make sense for that to be Chargois. Only other 40-man option is Boshers and he's been bad throughout Spring Training and AAA so far. Maybe they add Tepesch to the roster and use him as a long reliever.

Also thank goodness Vargas is back on the team.

I'm in favor of Vargas from the position player side, especially since Park is injured (still?). Berrios for Mejía is probably the right call. Mejía has enough stuff, but needs to learn to be a pitcher. If Berrios does in fact join the rotation, I hope he can provide the innings to maintain a 12 man pitching staff.

Chargois has only made one appearance since the start of the season. It could be Melotakis, but he's never pitched above AA. If they add someone not on the 40 man, I would think maybe Trevor Hildenberger would get a shot. The Twins have an automatic move off the 40 man involving Ehire Adrianza. The Twins could call up two position players until a 5th starter is needed. If that is the case, most likely Vargas and Palka. Especially with Sano facing a possible suspension.

Both Berrios and Duffey need an extended shot in the rotation. 50 starts.

Both will get their opportunity soon enough. I don't care which one gets a shot first but the Twins need to develop their own starting pitching. I don't see any long term solutions among the other 4.

if Sano is suspended he comes off the roster, though he'd have a definite gripe being the catcher made contact first.

What do you mean by this?

" The Twins have an automatic move off the 40 man involving Ehire Adrianza."

I don't think players suspended only a handful of games (I don't see Sano getting more than 2-3 games) come off the roster unless the rule has changed recently. That's part of the penalty.

As for the 40 man move, when Adrianza is done with his rehab stint, the Twins will either have to active him to the 25 man roster or DFA him. The Twins aren't going to keep Escobar, Adrianza AND Danny Santana on the active roster. That would be beyond dumb. So someone is going to be DFA. Adrianza is most likely and odds are he will clear waivers just fine.

You are correct. That's what I get for making assumptions in regards to suspensions.

An MLB player or minor league player who is placed on his league's Suspended List does count against his club's Reserve List and Active List.

A player on the Suspended List continues to accrue service time.

The main instance where it is used is when a player is suspended by the league as the result of an on-field incident, but it can also be initiated by the player's own club in the case of unacceptable behavior (such as a player getting into an altercation with his manager, a teammate, or a fan), or a violation of team rules related to chronic tardiness, possession of alcohol or reporting to work intoxicated, missing a doctor's appointment, et al. The Suspended List is used more liberally in the minor leagues, mainly because minor league players don't have the protection of a union.

NOTE: When an MLB player is placed on the Suspended List, a grievance is usually filed by the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) on behalf of the suspended player because the player does not get paid while on the list."

Also, i pray that when Adrianza gets activated DanSan is the casualty.

Twins could bring up someone not on the 40-man and drop somebody, such as Boshers or Murphy.

I hope Mejia's demotion is one of those breaks that allow a player to figure out what wasn't working and come back stronger.

Haley is more trouble than he's worth.

Maybe, but now that he's on the DL, he no longer is wasting a roster spot. The real benefit is that the Twins will have more time to evaluate his arm on the eventual rehab assignment.

And inevitably someone else is injured by the time he comes back. Which has been a point made all along although I have still wanted another hitter (not an extra utility fielder) up with the MLB team.

But the problem with the Twins bullpen is that they have several guys that are functioning as long/mop up men. One is okay but they need some guys that be trusted in tight situations and it doesn't look like many taking up spots in the bullpen have that potential.

The problem with the Twins bullpen is they have maybe 2-3 guys that legitimately should be in a major league bullpen at this stage. Lotta smoke and mirrors thus far IMVHO

Agreed. I also think having a guy like Haley who must stay on the 25 man only exacerbates the issue of finding pitchers with that potential. I believe that is a big part of the gripe.

hes been an ok long man. I see value in the ability to come out of the pen for 3+ innings and not let the game get further out of hand.

I completely agree. Haley has shown enough promise to be the guy filling that role this year. Small number of appearances, but it's clearly worth investing a roster spot this season for his potential value in the future.

What kind of potential value is there though?

If I was going to use this spot then it would be with a guy that would either flame out or become a setup level guy. The problem right now is that the Twins have Haley, Tonkin and Pressly all filling the same role (low upside long/6th inning RP'ers). And Breslow as a LOOGY. And Kintzler as smoke and mirrors low upside closer.

At some point the Twins need to add some upside into the bullpen. Somewhere.
