Thoughts on Jose Bautista

I see that Bautista is willing to consider a one year deal. He could be a great addition on a one year deal for the Twins. He would push Rosario to the 4th outfielder where he should be. The Twins could then trade Bautista at the deadline and get a nice group of prospects. Maybe a one year 25M contract would get him. Bautista isn't a good fit for the roster, but I could see rooting pretty hard for him if he ended up with the Twins. I picture him to be a player who will be playing with a chip on his shoulder after the inevitable 1yr contract. Im also probably biased having seen him play at Target Field a few times.

This right here. I haven't looked at his stats at Target Field but I know he has hit well there. Although, that could be due to the ineptness of the Twins pitching staff.

25 million for a guy to flip who would be solely a rental?  No.

What possible difference does the salary make?

Don't want to give up the 2nd round pick? Ok, I understand that. I disagree, but I understand.

Don't want to take PAs away from Rosario? OK, I disagree but understand the argument.

Bautista's too old? You might be right.

Worried about the money? That I do not understand.

I think they should sign him just so we can play over/under in game threads about how many times Dickbert utters the phrase "professional hitter."

Spend 25 million more wisely.  Get more younger talent.  Sign one of the younger OF's and some help in the bullpen.

Are the Twins going to contend solely due to Bautista?  Why sign a guy to flip when you lose a draft pick in doing so?  Would the prospects in the return be worth more than a 2nd round pick when you have no control over him next season?

Sure Bautista would be fun to watch and his attitude might be a bit refreshing, but that doesn't mean it is the right decision.

why on earth would he want to sign with a 103-loss team?

Money! He'll likely go to whatever team pays him the most. He has very few years left to collect a paycheck at this point.

Per article:

There’s something of a catch, though: per the report, “he wants it to be at a higher value than the qualifying offer.”

"It seems, then, that Bautista would need to see something greater than $17.2MM on an offer sheet for the 2017 season before he’s willing to give up his pursuit of a lengthier pact — at least at this stage."

And, apparently Toronto isn't pursuing him.

All this says is, pass, to me...

he's got money! he'll have made well over $100 million by the time he's done! what he doesn't have is a world series appearance!

Can he pitch?  Because he cannot field (-8 fielding runs) and he is only a DH now.  And the Twins do not need a DH.  In 2016 they got .253/.336/.426 with 20 HR from their DH position.  Bautista who is 36 hit .234/.366/.452 with 22 HR, and will likely decline.  So will he make an 103 L team into a 101 loss team?  Maybe.  But who cares.

I'd rather see them pay the $ to sign 3 Cubans or something.

I love the idea of adding Bautista. I don't not think it's a great move for 2017 though. The idea would have to be of flipping him this year, but he's been too injured as of late to be able to count on it. If healthy one may think he would return more then the lost comp pick, but that's not a certainty, and that's not really the main issue for me.

The Twins should have the most draft slot money at this time, and as of late we have seen the team's with the most money wield it to great benefit. I want that, and I don't trust Bautista to be worth +17M at the deadline which is what it would take to get a return worth the risk..

But if Bautista didn't come with some question marks like health, he wouldn't even be available to us.

He would take the first $20M offer thrown his way.

You have to almost laugh when a players on field antics take teams out of the running to sign him. Baltimore could have been a possibility but the fans hate him so much ownership would not touch him. And the there is Texas, he would get knocked out on a daily basis by his own teammate in Rougned Odor. Pretty sad when it comes to the point when a player can't get a team to bite on him. No team wants to give up a draft pick for a 1 year deal unless the money drops. He will be back in Toronto.
