Almost cringe-worthy. Minor league deal or nothing.  (I'd find it hard to root for the guy given that he's been a laughable advisory in a few big moments).

I would take a chance with a one year deal. It would certainly be a better signing than any of last year's relief signings. If he is looking to close though, he would be probably third on the depth chart.

For those who would rather go with the minor leaguers first, what happens if they falter? You would have to go deeper into the lower minors for someone who is further away from being ready, or you would have to trade some of those low level prospects in a midseason trade. A free agent signing during the offseason does not cost you prospects, only money and a roster spot. He can be let go midseason if he falters or a minor leaguer pushes him out with his performance.

No, no, no, no, GAWD no!  I know some of his stats are great but I've got too many of his blown saves forever burned in my brain.  I don't think this one is worth a roster spot.

I respectively disagree. He had an OPS+ of 81 last year. He will be 39 years old when the season starts in 2016.

If true, this is just TR trying to catch a single good year from a guy who is probably done.

Long shots are not the moves that a GM who is truly committed to winning makes.

No, just because of the hat. I just can't stomach having to look at that hat anymore than forced to when he pitches against the Twins. Call me shallow, but it really annoys me. Youth, baby. Time to go with youth. No turning back.

Looking at Rodney, kept Fien, wanted Hunter back, signed a make or break DH, claims to be keeping Plouffe, and moving Sano to the OF. Has actually not made a "look to the future" trade so far. The actions of a GM on his way to retirement? Interesting...... As to Rodney? Aw Cmon.

I had a guy used to work for me. Great guy, a good German. The more beer he drank, the further the hat would rotate! When it got to about 90 degrees he was unfit to drive, when it went all the way to 180" we took him home! :)

Fernando Rodney?  What? Methuselah wasn't available?

At some point they need to find out what the young guys like Alex Meyer, J.T. Chargois, Nick Burdi, Jake Reed and Trevor Hildenberger can do.

Is it strange that Berardino left Michael Tonkin off the list?

*48 Saves in 2014

*Terrible with the Mariners in 2015

*Incredible once picked up by Cubs (0.75 ERA) in 2015

I know he has blown saves in the past, but he also is one of the greatest closers in history based on Save rate and history.

How many of you would trade or sign Perkins if he were a free agent from another team with his recent past?  Why so much hostility for a guy (Rodney) who has a recent (2014) history of being the best in the game (48 saves)?

Why don't the Cubs want him back?

It's in the article. Cubs are one of the three teams listed as having interest.

He seems like a classic Twins signing. Not sure I'd do it on an MLB contract but maybe a one year. If you cut him you're only out cash. I'd rather they signed an 8th inning guy than a 6th inning guy who can maybe pitch later if he goes on a hot streak.

His fastball velocity has dropped from 96s in 2013 to 94s last year. Accoring to fangraphs the pitch value of his fastball took a nose dive last year to a career low -8.1. The change up has always been his best pitch, but he needs a fastball to set up the change. When relievers lose their fastball they are often done. Has Rodney lost his fastball or was his 2015 season an aberration? At 38 years old in 2015, it is very possible that he has lost the fastball that enabled his change up to be such a devastating pitch.

Ummm, yeah, please no. Go ahead and offer him a minor league deal, but make no agreement to guarantee him a 25 man roster spot. Don't give him any guaranteed money, TR.

Sorry, you were smarter and faster than I.

He's a better option than Fien and Boyer, that's for sure. He should be fine as long as you don't make him your closer, however since TR already signed the mediocre Fien, there is no room for another non elite RP.

Thanks, I hadn't looked.  I still wonder why they didn't try to lock him up right away- trying to get a bargain, I guess.

If anyone's tallying votes, I'd go with "no thank you".  I think he's probably one of a thousand guys who switched leagues late in the year, fooled people the first time around, and tempted GMs to think he had found the Fountain of Lost Fastballs.

Any of Sipp/Bastardo/Matusz would be awesome, but we'll see what kind of dough they are demanding. We absolutely need a shut down lefty, like many of you had mentioned. As far as Rodney goes, I can't say I'd be disappointed if we signed him to a cheap 1 year deal but I would rather take fliers on guys like Cook, Cishek and O'Flaherty...think they still have some good innings in them.

Posted

Much rather have Sipp. Hoping those rumors have some weight to them.

Plus 1. Good against both sides and strikes people out. He's likely in line for 3 years which puts him up there in age.

Matusz isn't a free agent yet, 1 more year of control for Baltimore.

whoops sorry about that! thanks for the heads-up.

on a side note, anyone want to welcome Grant Belfour back to the family?
