Wow. A little surprising to see Kirillof called up, Larnach sent down, and Thielbar put on IL. Mahle on 60 day IL is also somewhat surprising.

What is wrong with Thielbar?

Fair to say this was a terrible trade for the Twins. They never got much out of Mahle last year and it doesn't look like they will this year, either.

With Miranda struggling, it sure would be nice to have Spencer Steer available.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20. But it is what it is. A brutal, disaster of a trade and one the Twins certainly wish they could take back.

Not an encouraging update on Mahle. Other than the fact that he's now on the 60-day IL, does this mean that the  "hope" is that rest will do the trick, or is this only the first phase of an extended absence, indicating a more serious injury that may require surgery?

Yep, hindsight, but yep, looking brutal. I was actually more disappointed, at the time, for losing CES. But, at the time, also thought it was the right move. Most did, some didn’t. We needed a starter last year, there weren’t many available. Mahle was maybe the 2nd best available? Many wanted us to give up more for Montas. If you want a silver lining, at least we didn’t do that.

Of course, the trades for Ryan, Gray, and Lopez don’t look so bad.

Yep. No one ‘wins’ them all, and there is risk involved in any trade. Do you not make the trade? I know there were some who didn’t like the trade then, so kudos to them.  But when you are a team who won’t spend on pitching in the FA market, trade and development is all that is left. It’s a game of risk that mid-market teams have to play. Given the same situation, without hindsight involved, I’d have still made that trade then. Many were ecstatic over the trade, many wanted Montas, many wanted to sign pitchers who are seriously not living out their contracts (I wanted to sign Rodón). So here we are. Let’s hope Ryan, Gray and Lopez continue keeping us in it, and Ober, Varland and SWR contribute.

We will still get half a season from Mahle assuming he is ready after 60 days

If he returns … hope he does, but sadly, for him and for us, at this point, I’m not going to count on it.

I think they'll be fine. Julien will get another shot, Farmer and Lewis are due back from injury, plus Lee should get a shot later in the season. Not to mention Miranda has shown signs of breaking out and Martin may or may not get healthy and get a shot. And Steer's slash line isn't that impressive - .240/.316/.404 .720 OPS, good for an OPS+ or wRC of 88, 12% below league average.

I’m okay with making the trades; one has to take risks to improve. But the nature of risk is sometimes you roll a natural 20 and sometimes you roll a 1. Sometimes you get Aragorn, others you get Charles.

The Mahle trade was definitely in the high risk category. I have some difficulties talking in terms of ‘winning’ and ‘losing’ because I don’t view trades as a competition with our trading partners, only competition with ourselves. We want to improve. I think over all we have, but in the two steps forward, one back category, this is definitely the step back

I liked the trade at the time, but now it looks VERY rough for the Twins.

I liked the concept, needing another arm, and approved of the choice of prospects to move, but thought Mahle was too high risk to be the target.

Given who was available for the cost … Montas would have cost more and there was iffyness there, too, as he had already been on the IL that year … would you have chosen to do nothing? And I’m not suggesting that would have been a bad thing, just wondering what your move, or no move would have been at the time.
