I wonder if the Padres are worried about all the money they've committed to Tatis.  Here they now have Soto, who is truly a guy to build around and I expect San Diego to do whatever is necessary to keep him a Padre for the rest of his career.  But holy crap, the money tied into Tatis and Soto, no matter how talented they are could just about hamstring them in the years ahead.  If we were talking New York or the Dodgers, it probably wouldn't be THAT big of a deal.  But San Diego is going to be strapped.

He's insanely young, which is why all this dumb crap is so frustrating. He could have been a 70-win player at age 30, the kind of elite shortstop we see once a generation.

As a 20 through 22-year-old, he accumulated about 13 fWAR... or about 7 fWAR per 140 games (3 fWAR in Covid 2020, for crying out loud). He wasn't just good, he was Soto-level incredible.

Madison Bumgarner busted himself up on a dirt bike a few years ago. Chris Sale just broke his wrist biking a couple weeks after he finally made it back from the IL. Star players wind up punching walls and breaking their knuckles, etc. There are plenty of veteran players who don't follow the rules, too.

The PED issue is totally different IMHO. I definitely believe players can wind up testing positive for a banned substance on accident or even if they were careful. Improperly labeled supplements caused a lot problems back in the day and I could see something funky happening now. Tatis' excuse is ridiculous though. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but especially after the motorcycle crash, this was extremely reckless at the very least. I think that's probably why San Diego is so pissed off.

I don't believe for a second that players can inadvertently test positive for a banned substance.  I guarantee you every team has an established number that they provide to every single player to offer advice.  I'm sure the team informs them that the doctor or pharmacist on the other end of the line will not disclose the questions being asked to the team.  All a player has to do is call this number, send a picture of what they're wondering about taking, and the official fielding the call/text will advise them yes or no.  If the official isn't sure, then they tell the player to hold off while they contact MLB to verify.

Any player who can't wait even a couple of days to get the thumbs up is just acting stupidly, and deserves every bit of scorn and punishment they receive.

Supplements can be on the safe list or have no ingredients on the label which violate terms and then, tada, they get "contaminated." It happens. There also seem to be some issues around DHCMT.

Neither potential issue seems to be relevant here. Tatis acted recklessly.

This is my point--I have to think that if something is on the safe list, then the player is fine (the only reason they wouldn't be is if the substance is on the safe list, and the player is just taking the word of someone that what they're being given is actually what they're being told they're being given--this should never happen).  If there are no ingredients on the label, then the player should run from taking it; failure to do so is not inadvertent, it's a willful disregard of readily available resources to ensure compliance.  That's better described as recklessness or negligence.

There are ingredients. Water, falafel, steak, salt, grits, blueberries, flour, orange peels, rye grass, old tires from an RV, cotton, etc.

The ingredient not on the label but is still sometimes found <banned PED substance> There have been lawsuits over it happening multiple times. Even with league approved supplements. I can't remember if it was MLB or the NFL most recently.

While true, irrelevant. In this case the player is claiming they used a prescription medication that contained a banned substance. They, or their doctor should have ran it by the team before applying it to Tatis’ scalp.

At one time, the majority of those who tested positive for PEDs have been from the DR. However, given that, you would think players would know to ask their teams’ doctors/trainers for assistance in anything they take or apply.
